IMPROVEMENT IN LEATHER-SHAVERS.

To all whom it may con-cern Be it known that I, AUGUST HENRY BE- SCHORMANN, of the city and coiuity of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an lmproved Leatherl Shaver or Ourrying- Knife, of which the following is a specifica tion:

My invention relates to a leather-shaver or currying-knife', consisting of a metallic frame itted with handles, adjustable knives, guiderollers, clamps and their attachments, so arranged that, by slots provided in this frame, these knives may be adjusted to required positions by set-screws, and the guide-rollers be so set, near `the edges of these knives, by

ymeans of screw attachments to these clamps,

also fitted to this frame, that the thickness of the leather-shavings to be pared oit' may be regulated at will, and thus an easier and more perfect method of dressing leather insured.

This currying tool is intended solely for hand use, and Consists of the following parts: F is the metallic frame, to the ends of which wooden handles W W' are attached, after the manner usually adopted in this kind of tool. a a a b b b are slots provided in this frame F for the proper adjustment of the top and bottom knives K K', by the set-screws S S S' S', to the required positions. These knives are made straight for the side exposed to theleather to be cut, and beveled -off on the side' adjoining the rollers. On bot-h sides of the frame F, near the handles W W', bent metallic clamps C G C' G' are fixed by means of screws d d', for the purpose of holding between them the regulating or adjusting screws N N N' N'. These screws N N' are square-shaped about the -center of their lengths, between the clamps C G G' C', so as to serve as bearings, O O O' O', for the guide-rollers R R', and,by the requisite adjustment on these screws of nuts mz n' n', these rollers may be removed or brought closer to the edges of the top and bottom knives K K'the roller R to the knife K, and'roller R' to the knife K'-and thus be kmade to leave a larger or smaller space between them and the paring-knife edges, according to the thickness of the shavings required to be cut from the leather hides on which such tool may be used.

A workman, in using this leather-shaver in place of a currying-tool, takes the handleW' in his right hand, and the handle W in his left, and presses forward onto the leather to be shaved in the usual manner, and by the general arrangement of the several parts the following advantages may be claimed: First, the paring of leather hides is much facilitated, and ordinary labor can be made to replace that of skilled workmanship, by reason of these guide-rollers limitingv the depth of the cutting of the paring-knives, and thus insuring an easier and more perfect dressing; secondly, the knives being straight on the side exposed to the material to be cut they need not be displaced for the purpose of sharpening, when blunted or burred during their passage over saltor other foreign matter used in the preparation of hides, but can have an edge replaced by a small stone rubbed over their surfaces; thirdly, the rollers serve to squeeze and press the leather to these knife-edges so as to insure a true cut the whole time, and one set composed of knife and roller may be used for cut ting coarse shavings, and the other set for fine nishing work, and thus such a tool, properly prepared, may be used to commence and tinish a hide-dressing without loss of time for readjustment of the several parts or changing the knives; fourthly, for furriers it is safer than the old currying-tool, in not requiring' so much force to be employed on elastic skins, and therefore the skins will stretch less.

I claim as my invention- The combination of the frame F, provided with slots a a a b b b and set-screws s s s' s', for adjustment of the paring-knives K K', with the adjustable clamps C C C' C' and regulating-screws N N', fitted with guide-rollers R R', for settin g the depth of the cutting of these knives K K', substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
