To all whom it v'may cof/cierne Be it known that I, DANIELv FpBnAMAN, a citizen ofthe United States of America, and a resident of Houston, couii'ty of Harris, and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dispensing Devices, of which the. following is a specification, reference being .had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
My invention relates to the'- ispensing of liquids and semi-solids, and particularly to means for measuring and d' 'insing oils and greases.
One object of my invention .s s vto provide a simple and durable appara-tbs of the aforesaid character that shallbe adapted to dispense relatively heavy oils and greases with facility.
Another object of my invention is to provide an effective and improvedr valve mechanism capable of adaptation topa large variety of uses. Other objects Iand advantages of my invention will be set@ Qrth hereinafter.

The structure illustrated comprises a base 10, a supply tank or boxglfl. a top castding to Fig- "adjusted to 1eA discharge ing or plate 12. secured to the. .base by tie c rods 13, a cylinder 14, a. piston 15 operating therein, an outer cylindricalf-guide -casing 16, which is formed integra-l with the bottom head 17 of thc cylinder, and a pair of interposed vsemi- cylindrical sleeve valves 18 and 19 between the cylindrical casing 16 and the, cylinder 14.
The cylinder 14 has a relatively large inlet port .20, and a large-outlet port 21, which is opposite the-inlet port. The casing 16 has an opening 22 registering with port 20 and is connected to the tank or box 11 by means of a short section of pipe or conduit 23.
The casing 16 is provided with an outlet or discharge well 24,`having an opening 25 in register wit-l1 the outlet port 21, a discharge pipe 26 being screwed into the mouth of the well 24. A flexible pipe or tube 27 issecured to and forms a continuation of the pipe 26 and has at its outer end a discharge nozzle 28.
The piston or plunger 15 is connected to vsuitable length to enable the pump to be operated without undue effort on the part of the attendant. The movement of the lever in a downward direction is limited by an adjustable stop 34 which may comprise a set screw extending through a tapped hole in the lever and having a set nut 35 as shown in Figure 1.
The valves 18 and 19 may be operated in any suitable manner. In the arrangement illustrated in the drawings a valve operating lever 36 is provided and is connected on opposite sides of its fulcruin 37 to the respective. valves by valve rods and links 3S and l The lever 36 is extended to provide a convenient handle 40 and has a bell crank formation so that. a limited oscillating motion is pcrn'iitted. The arrangement of parts is such that the valves operate alternately in opposite directions, the outlet valve 18 being closed when the inlet valve 19 is open, and vice versa.
The operation of the apparatus will be clearly understood from the foregoing description, but may be outlined as follows:
Assuming that the tank or box 11 which may for example be a ive gallon grease can,
is at least partiallyilled with a heavy liquid l or semi-solid substance such as grease, and the handle 33'is pushed down and the handle 40 is elevated, the piston under these conditions will be at the inner end of its stroke, valve 19 will be open and valve 18 closed (the position of the valves being shown in Figure 3). rlhe handle 33 may then be raised to elevate the piston l5, suficient suction being produced to fill the lower part of the cylinder with grease from the tank.
The handle 40 is next depressed to reverse the position of the valves, closing valve 19 and opening valve 18, then, upon pushing downwardly on the handleBS a measured quantity o1" grease is discharged through the pipes 26 and 27 and outof the nozzle 28. The amount of grease handled by each stroke of the pump may be adjusted and determined b the settmg of the screw 34, and it is inten ed that the nozzle 28 shall be inserted in the receiving port of the casing or box in the gearing or mechanism which is to be lubricated.
Some of the advantages of my invention may be emphasized as follows:
llhe valve arrangement is such as to permit very laro'e inlet and outlet ports, thus permittlng the handling of heavy grease with a relatively small amount of effort and with much greater speed than has hitherto been considered possible. 'llhe a paratus is compact and simple--there is nothing to get out of order and is readily carried from place to place.
v'llhe variations in size and arrangement of parts may be edected within the spirit and scope of my invention.
What ll claim is:
1. A dispensing pump for viscous fluids, comprising a cylinder' having large inlet and outlet ports at one end, a plunger operating therein, a pair of cylindrically curved valve members slidably mounted on the cylinder, a lever for actuating the plunger, and a valve lever connected to the respective valves and adapted to operate them in alternation. v
2. A dispensing pump for viscous fluids, comprising a base, a supply tank or box, a cylindrical casing in communication with the tank or box, a cylinder within the casing having inlet and outlet ports with openings in the casing and interposed semi-cylindrical sleeve valves between the casing and the cylinder, and means for alternately opening and closing the valves in conjunctive relation with the inward and outward movement of the plunger.

5. A dispensing pump for viscous uids comprising a base, a supply tank or box, a tubular cylinder having a large inlet port in communication with the tank or bon and a large outlet port directly opposite the inlet port, a head formed to provide an annular sleeve projection around the cylinder` concentric therewith, and segmental cylindrical valves between the sleeve projection of the head and the cylinder for controlling the inlet and outlet ports.
6. A dispensing pump for viscous fluids comprising a base, a supply tank or box, a tubular cylinder having a large inlet port in communication with the tank or box and a large outlet port directly opposite the in- Vthrough the inlet port during one of its strokes and to force said Huid out of the cylinder through the outlet port during its opposite stroke, a pair of cylindrical sleeve valves disposed in longitudinal sliding en` gagement with said cylinder to open and close the respective inlet and outlet ports lill@ and a manually operable linkage mechanism connected to the respective sleeve valves and adapted to concurrently slide the valves in opposite direction to open and close the respective valves in alternation.
8. A dispensing pump for viscous fluids comprising a cylinder having inlet and outlet ports disposed in one end thereof, a reciprocable piston within said cylinder, an operating lever for actuating said piston, a pair of valves for controlling the opening and closing of said inlet and outlet ports, an operating lever connecting the respective valves for concurrently actuating them in alternation preparatory to each successive stroke of the'plstpn and adjustable means carried by said piston operating lever for llilD determining the length of stroke of said piston whereby a redetermined quantity o Huid is dispense 9.
