FREDERICK VTENDLING, OF EDIKONTON, ALBERTA, CANADA.
VALVE-FACING TO'QL.
Application filed June 26, 1623. Serial No. 647,882.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, FRnDnnioK WENDLING,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Edmonton, in the Province of Alberta and Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and Improved Valve-Facing Tool, of which the following is a full,-clear, and exact description.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in hand-operated tools, and it pertains more particularly to a tool especially adapted for use in 'refacing valves of the type employed in internal combustion motors, pumps, and the like.
It is one of the objects of the invention to provide a hand-operated too-l which. may be employed for facing internal combustlon motor valves.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a new and improved mechanism for adjusting the valve to operative position.
With the above and other objects in view, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan View of a tool constructed in accordance with the present in vention;
Fig. 2 is a View in side elevation thereof;
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 4 is a transverse setcional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the device comprises a base 5, which is preferably of rectangular form. Rigidly secured to the base 5, are two right-angular members 6, each being formed with a base portion 7 and a vertical flanged portion 8. Each of the vertical flanged portions 8 of the right-angular members 6 is notched, as at 9, and the purpose of such notches will be hereinafter more fully described. Each of these right-angular members 6 is secured to the base by bolts 10, or the like.
Secured to the flange 8 of one of the rightangular members 6, by means of a bolt 11, is a block 12, said block carrying a cutter 13. The cutter 13 is mounted in a cut-out portion in the block 12, such cut-out portion being designated by the reference numeral 14. For adjustably securing the cutter 13 in the cut-out portion 14, a bolt 15, or the like, is employed.
The block 12 is provided with an elongated slot 16, through which the bolt 11 passes, and this construction provides for adjustmentof the block 12 transversely of the base 5 of the tool,
'Adjustably mounted on the base 5, by meansof a screw or bolt 17, is a plate 18, which plate is provided with slot 19 to receive said bolt or screw 17. This plate 18 has a vertical extension 20, with which a screw-threaded bolt 21 has engagement, and said bolt 21 is provided with a centering head 22, the purpose of which willbe hereinafter described. This bolt 21 is further provided with an operating handle 23.
Connectlng the flanges 8 of the rightangular members 6 is a transverse bar 24,
and. slidably mounted on said transverse bar 1 I 24, is a yoke member 25. Secured to each of the arms of the yoke member 25, is an arm 26, and each of these arms 26 is provided with a hooked end 27. Carried by the yoke member 25, is a bolt 28, and said bolt lies in the notch 29 formed in the bar 30, which connects the rear end of the right-angular members 6. This bolt 28 is loosely mounted in the yoke member 25, and having threaded engagement with the bolt 28, is a wing nut 31, by means of which the yoke 25 and the arms 26 carried thereby are moved transversely of the base 5.
The reference character 32 designates a valve and said valve has the ordinary valve stem 33. 34 designates a handle or crank member which is adapted to be secured to 1131i: valve stem by means of a nut 35, or the The device operates in the following manner:
The valve stem 33 of the valve 32 is p0- sitioned in the notches 9 of thefianges 8 of the right-angular members 6. After this is done, the hook ends 27 of the arms 26 are engaged with the valve stem, and the wing nut 31 is tightened on the screw-threaded bolt 28. This action moves the yoke member 25 and the arms 26 in such a manner that the hook ends 27 of said arms 26 pull the valve stem into the notches 9 of the flanges 8 of the right-angular members 6, as shown in Fig. 4. After this has been done, the block 12 is adjusted so that its cutter 13 will engage the face of the valve 32, and the centering head 22 of the bolt 21 is then engaged with the valve head to maintain the same in proper position.
After the foregoing adjustments have been made, the cutter 13 is adjusted, and by a turning of the nut 31, the valve 32 is securely held in position relative to the cutter 13. The handle 34 is now attached to the valve stem and serves the means by which the valve is rotated in the presence of the cutter 13. It will be noted that the cutter 13 has an angularly disposed cutting edge, and by changing the cutters the desired degree of pitch may be given the valve face.
From the foregoing it is apparent that the present invention provides a new and improved hand-operated tool for facing or refacing valves, and that by the construction employed the valves may be cut with faces of different pitch, and faces in the proper plane and true with respect to the valve stem may be obtained.
lVhat is claimed is:
1. A valve facing tool comprising a base, notched flanged members carried by said base and constituting a work support, a yoke member mounted for sliding movement between the flanged members, said yoke member having work-engaging hook portions, and means for moving the yoke member relative to the fian ed members to cause the work to engage the notches of the notched flanged members.
2. A valve facing tool comprising a base, a plurality of notched members carried by said base and constituting a work support,
a yoke member having hooked ends to engage the work and maintain the same in engagement with the notched members, .and means for moving said yoke member rela tive to said notched members.
3. A valve facing tool comprising a base,
a plurality of notched members carried by 7 said base and constituting a work support, a yoke member having hooked ends to engage the work and maintain the same in engagement with the notched members, and means for moving said yoke member relative to said notched members, said means comprising a cross bar connected to the FREDERICK WENDLING.
