IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-KINDLERS.

Specification forming part "of Letters Patent No. 149,510, dated April 7, 1874 application filed March 14, 1874.

Illinois, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Fire-Kindlers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to. x the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure l of the drawing is a representation of an outside View of my fire-kindler. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a View of the extinguisher.

My invention has relation to fire-kindlers, which consist of a metallic perforated case secured on a rod or handle, and containing some refractory absorbin gsubstance which will hold in its pores aflammable fluid.

The improvement which I have made on these devices consists in making the case tapering or conical, and combining therewith ametallic extinguisher or shield, as I will now proceed to explain.

In the annexed drawings, A designates a conical shell or case containing any suitable porous substance, B, which is refractory, such, for instance, as burned clay, asbestus, and the like. The case A is.;thickly perforated, and the holes may be opposite holes or recesses a a made into said porous substance for the purpose of readily saturating this substance with a flammable fluid, and obtaining a large flame when the kindler is ignited. D designates a extinguishing the flame on the kindler after a fire is properly lighted, and also for preventing evaporation of the flammable fluid left in the kindler.

By constructing the case A of a conical form it is more readily and conveniently used than are 'the cylindrical kindlers, and by so con structing the kindler I am able to employ the extinguisher to advantage.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination of the extinguisher or shield O, the perforated conical case A, con taining a porous refractory substance, B, and secured on a handle, as herein set forth, and for the purpose explained.
