PATENT OFFICE.
o'r'ro GENTSGH, or MAGDEBURG, GERMANY, AssIGNoa T0 aNEs'r nosn, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
CONNECTING MEMBER. 7
Application filed July 25, 1921, Serial No. 487,539. Renewed April 15,1924.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Or'ro GnN'rsoH, a citizen of Germany, and resident of Magdeburg, Germany, have invented a new and Improved Connecting Member, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. I
My invention relates to a connecting member, and aims to provide certain new and useful improvements in connection with a device of this character, and more partic'ui larly a connecting member which is utilized lished was in many instances, not efficient in that the members were not pressed into intimate contact with each other.
Where connecting members were provided which avoided the foregoing effects it was found that these latter members were too heavy, and also that the same might not be manufactured at a nominal figure.
With this in mind, my present invention aims to provide a connecting member which primarily may be of such a nature as to permit of the quick association of two elec trical conductors, one with the other.
A further object of my invention is the construction of a device of the character stated in which the contact established between the connecting members shall be of such an intimate nature as to reduce current losses at this point, to a minimum.
Still a further object of my invention is the provision of a connecting member which shall be extremely simple in construction, and capable of being manufactured at a nominal figure, aside from the fact that the parts will be sufliciently rugged to withstand even abnormal usage thus eliminating any objections on this point.
Still other objects of my invention will become apparent from the annexed specifi cation taken in connection with the drawings, which latter illustrate practical em bodlments of the same, and in which;
Figure 1 is a side view'of a connecting 7 member embodying my improved construction and showing the same applied to a pair of conducting members.
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view taken along the lines 22 and in the directlOl of the arrows indicated in Figure 1, an
Figure 3 is a bottom view of the member.
In these views the reference numeral 5 indicates the .main conducting member which is to be tapped by the lead or second conducting member 6, both of these members being stripped of their insulation at all points adjacent to the point at which they are to contact with each other.
' 'Referring now more particularly to the connecting member it will be seen, reference being had to FigureQ that the same preferably includes a body 7 V shaped in cross section, one of the arms 8 thereof being eX- tended beyond the second arm, and terminating in a portion .9 lying at right angles to both of the arms of the body portion 7,
and being spaced from the outer end of the smaller arm. I
Thus it will be seen that aspace is provided, which is suflicient to permit of the passage of the conducting members 5 and 6, and, as has been illustrated in the drawings, I preferably introduce the conducting member 6 through this space into the crotch of the arms of the body portion 7, subsequent to which the entire device maybe hooked over the second conducting member or lead 5.
Now with a" view of providing means the main lead 5 and pressing the same into intimate contact with the conducting member 6, a movement of this latter member being precluded by virtue of the fact that the same is wedged between the arms of the body portion 7. H
Thus an eflicient electrical contact is established between the conducting members and 6, and the whole is retained in applied position.
of the screws 10 has been continued to a point at which this has been efliected, a clamping bolt 11 extending through and engaging lugs 12 and 13 associated with the.
end of the shorter arm and extended portion of the body of the member 7 respectively, is turned so that the lugs 12and 18 are drawn towards each other; By virtue ofthe fact that the bolt and lug which it engages are to one side of the lineof pressure produced by the set screws 10, andconducting members '5 and 6 it will be seen'that quite a leverage maybe established at these points,
and thus the parts are not alone locked by the set screws 10, but also by the bolt 11 so that the conducting members 5 and 6 are pressed even more intimately into engagement with each other, and theset screws and body portion, whereby any current leakage will be virtually precluded, it being also noted in this connection that the parts will be more firmly locked with respect to 'each other, thus further precluding any accidental "detachment thereof.
From the foregoing it will be appreciated that the objects set forth in the preamble of this specification have been accomplished, and it will further be understood that nu merous modifications of structure might readily be resorted to without in the least departing from the spirit of my invention, which I claim as:
1. A connecting member for electrical conductors, including an elongate body portion V shaped in cross section, said conductors being adapted to lie in the crotch between the arms of said body portion, and a plurality of independently operable means each for pressing said conductors into intimate engagement with each other and with said body portion at a different point along the length of the body portion.
2.- A connecting member including a unitary body portion presenting an opening and a crotch beyond the opening permitting of said body being hooked over conductors to be clamped one atop the other in said crotch, and 'means co-operating 'with said body portion and bearing against said conductors for pressing the same into intimate engagement with each other and with said body.
3. A connecting member including a body portion presenting an-opening' permitting of said body being hooked over conductors to be clamped into contact with each other, means =co-operating with said body portion and bearing against said conductors for pressing the same into intimate engagement with each other and with said body, further means adapted to subsequently increase After the clamping action said extended arm, and set screws projecting through said extended portion and having their inner ends substantially in line with the crotch of said body portion. 1 5. A connecting member including a body .portion V shaped in cross section,'one of "the arms'of said body portion being extended beyond the second of the same,--a'n extended porti'onforming a continuation of said extended arm, set screws projecting through said extended portion and having their inner ends substantially in line with the crotch of said body portion, lugs forming-continuations of said extended portion and smallerarm respectively, and means co-oper'ating'with said lugs for drawing said-parts toward each other. r
6.v A connecting member including a body portion V shaped in cross section, oneiof the arms of said body portion being extended beyond the second ofthe sa-rne, an extended portion forming a contlnu-ation'of sald extended arm, set screws projecting through said extended portion and having their inner ends substantiallyfin' line with the crotch of said body portion, lugs forming continuations of said extended portion, and
smaller arm respectively, and a bolt extend ing' through said lugs to permit of the same being drawn towards each other.
7. A connecting member including a body portion presenting an opening permitting of said body beinghooked over conductors .to be clamped into contact with each other, means co-operating with said body'portion and bearing against said conductors for pressing the same into'intiniate engagement with each other and with said body, and
further means adapted to subsequently increase the securement of the tween said parts.
'8. A connecting member for electrical condu'ct'ors including a substantially C-shaped body portion, the .top ofthe C being of in- 'vcrted V-shape to provide a crotch inside and at the top of the C, said crotch for receiving said conductors in longitudinally overlapping relation,-andmeans for com-' pressing the conductors into intimat'emutual contact and into intimate contact with the crotch, said means including a clamping instrumentality carried by .and threadedly adjustable on the body portion.
