Description

J. R. RAIBLRE- KEG on BARREL May '20, 1924.
Filed Aug. 11 1923 Patented May 20, 1924.
UNITED STATES JOHN R. RAIBLE, or CLEVELAND, OHIO, As'srenoa TO THE Genie Enos. ooorEnAeE COMPANY, or CLEVELAND, OHIO, A CORPORATION or 01:10.
KEG OR BARREL.
Application filed August 11, 1923. Serial No. 656,785.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN R. RAIBLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Kegs or Barrels, of which the following is a. full, clear, and exact description. l v
The present invention relates to barrels, kegs, and devices of similar character in which goods for shipment are to be packed, and the invention is particularly directed toward that class of containers in which there is a head, as for instance, in such containers as barrels and kegs.
The object of the invention is to provide means for reinforcing and holding such a head as has been described to prevent its becoming dislodged by the impact of material a ainst it in the course of shipment u a 0 or 111 handling the container. I
Reference should be had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which Fig. 1 is an elevatlon with portions in section; Fig. 2 is a top plan view; Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of a portion ofthe container; Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a portion of the container.
In containers such as barrels and kegs which have a head, it is commonly found that these heads become broken and dislodged in shipment and in handling, due to the fact that the material within the container may become loose and so be forcefully knocked against the head of the barrel or keg, and additionally, when these barrels or kegs are being handled and put in stacks when filled with material, the handlers are very apt to bring a barrel or keg down'upon the top of another barrel or keg with considerable force and weight, and so stave in the head of the same.
In the present construction the head is reinforced against being moved inwardly or outwardly, and at the same time the character of the reinforcement is such that it leaves the inside of the chime of the barrel unobstructed so as to afford a grip for the hand of the person handling the same.
Referring to the drawings. 1 indicates a keg or barrel, and 2 indicates a head which is applied to the keg or barrel in a manner tecting the chime, a hoop 3 which may be of metal.
Extending transversely and upon the inside as well as upon the outside of the cover area plurality of loops of wire, such as mdicated at 4:. Such a loop of wire is assembled with respect to the cover by form--- ing ahole through the chime and the hoop 3, as indicated at 5, and a second hole above the same, as indicated at 6, and then forming similar holes at diametrically opposite portion of the chime and hoop 3.
A continuous piece of wire is inserted through the lower holes and the upper holes, and the free ends are brought together above the cover 2. These wires are then subject to tension so that they are as tight as possible, and the free ends are then wound together in any suitable manner, thus holding" the wire loop tight.
P TE T oFAHeEQ-f There may be thus similarly formed and i used any number of such wire loops, in the drawing there being two shown, indicated at 4 and 7.
It will be seen that the wire loops are in tension and so assist the hoop 3 in preventing any outward expansion of the cage at the chime thereof, which would tend to permit the cover 2 to move up or down, and then additionally the under wires of each of the loops support the under side of the cover if a weight be dropped upon the outside of the cover, which weight would tend to push the cover inwardly.
On the other hand, the outside wires of the loops prevent. the outward movement of the cover 2 if the contents within the kegs during handling, or at other times, shall I impact with force against the head with a tendency to push the head outwardly.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the construction while simple is efiective. for reinforcing the head of a keg or barrel against both outward and inward movement.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. A container, a head member in said container, a plurality of loops of wire havthrough openings formed in the sides of the container adjacent the edge of the cover said wire loops being under tension to provide a reinforcement against inward or outward movement of the cover.
In testimony whereof, 'I hereunto affix my signature.
' JOHN R. RAIBLE.
