SWITCH.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Home H. TRoEMnL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, having invented certain new and useful Improvements in Switches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to switches, more especially to a solenoid circuit breaker switch, it being among the objects of this invention to produce a device which is simple, reliable, and positive in its action. This invention constitutes an improvement over the switch described and claimed in the patent to Weaver, No. 1,293,587, issued February 1, 1919.
In carrying the objects of my invention into effect, I provide a switch having aseries winding and a shunt winding, the terminals of which are secured to contact posts on the body portion of the device. The posts are provided with spring members having contacts on the free ends, the bottoms of the contacts being preferably rounded to allow a sliding action of a contact plate or disk which is carried by the core which operates in the solenoid formed by the windings and to the end. of which the contact plate is secured and adapted to be drawn into position by the action of the windings to close the gap between the rounded contacts.

The switch 1 has a winding 2 which is connected to the armature 3 of a dynamo electric machine by a lead 4; and constitutes the shunt winding of the switch. Leads 5 and 6 form connection for the other terminal of the armature 3, and one terminal of the battery 7. The other terminal of the shunt winding 2 is connected to the armature by lead 8. The battery 7 is connected by lead 9 and fuse 10 to the central post 11 of a single pole, double-throw switch 12, another post of which is connected to the series winding 13 of the dynamo electric machine; The third post is connected to the line by leads 14 and 16, an ammeter 15 be Application filed March 25, 1920. The terminals 19 and 20 of the shunt and series windings, respectively, are secured to contact posts 21 and 22, respectively, to which there are secured inwardly extending spring members 23 and 2%, respectively, carrying contacts 25 and 26, the bottoms of which are rounded. The upper portion 27 of the core is fixed in the solenoid so as to allow a space 29 between the two parts thereof when the movable portion 28 is in its lower positions. A brass washer 30 is usually secured to the top of the movable portion 28,
to the lower end of which a disk or plate 31 is secured and is adapted to close the circuit between contacts 25 and 26.
The operation of the switch is as follows:
hen it is desired to start the generator switch 12 is thrown in the position shown in Figure 2 causing current to flow from the battery to the generator to start the same. As the generator voltage builds up coil 2 will be gradually energized until it is sufficiently strong to draw up disk 31 into engagement with contacts 25 and 26. When a load is put on the line an additional circuit is formed through contacts 25 and 26 and coil 18 producing an additional pull on the core, the position thereof being raised as shown in dotted lines in Figure 1. I proportion the various parts, such as the numher and character of the wires forming the coils 2 and 18, the size of the air-gap 29, the diameter of the core, and the tension of the springs so that the energy of the coils will be sufficient to hold disk 31 in contact with and against the tension of springs 23 and 24 until the pressure and current drop so low that the action of the springs overcomes that of the coils forcing disk 31 away from the contacts without producing an are which is injurious to the contacts.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
