Description

May 20 1924. F. E. SCHARTOW JOINTED TRACE coNNEcER Fnedbct. 25, 192s* Patented FRANK E. SCHARTVOW', OF RACINE, WISCONSIN.
JOINTED TRACE CONNCTER.
Application led October 25, 1923. Serial No. 670,742.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, FRANK E. SCHAR- 'row, a citizen of the United States, residing at Racine, in the county of Racine and 5 State of lNisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jointed Trace Connecters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to jointed connections for attaching traces to hames. Connections of this character, usually include a trace-carrying member, a hame-carried member having side plates at opposite sides of said trace-carrying member, and a rivet pivoting said si-de plates and said trace' carrying member together. Thus, all strain of pulling the load, is placed on the rivet and it soon becomes worn and is subject to breakage. Furthermore, the connecter and its rivet very often injure the collar around which the hames are passed.
It is the object of my invention to provide an improved form of jointed trace connecter, which will be free of the above obs jections and may be manufactured easily and inexpensively.
With the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, the description being supplemented by the accompanying drawing.
Figure l is a side elevation.
Figure 2 is an edge view. Y
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view on line 3 3 of Fig. l.
Figure 4 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view on line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Figure 5 is vertical transverse section on line 5--5 of Fig. l.
In the drawing above briefly described, the numeral l designates agtrace-carrying member having an eye 2 at its front end, while its rear end is adapted for connection ina well known manner to a trace. A llame-carried member 3 co-operates with the member l and is preferably formed of a single metal plate bent upon itself to provide a pair of side plates 4 and 5 and a bearing loop 6 connecting said plates. The loop 6 is adapted to receive the usual U-bolt or the like for attaching the connecter to the hames.
The plates 4 and 5 are disposed at opposite sides of the eye 2 and are formed with -inwardly extending bosses 7 which are received in said eye to pivotally connect the two members l and 3, spreading of said plates 4 and 5, being prevented by a rivet 8 which passes through openings 9 in the aforesaid bosses. These bosses are preferably formed by inwardly stamping the plates 4 and 5 and it will be seen that this construction forms countersinks 10 in the outer sides of said plates, to receive the ends of the rivet 8, preventing the latter from injuring the collar. A
By connecting the members l and 3 in the manner disclosed, it will be seen vthat all strain of pulling the load is placed upon the eye 2 and the bearing bosses 7, the rivet 8 acting only to prevent spreading of the plates 4 and 5 and being subjected to no wear whatever. Thus, a much more durable conneter is provided than those in which the pulling strain is transferred directly to a rivet which pivotally connects he llame-carried and trace-carrying memers.
The outer side plate 4 is preferably tangential to the substantially cylindrical loop 6, while the inner plate 5 is approximately radial to said loop. By this relation, it will be seen that the member 3 is outwardly oifset to some extent from the collar, so that it will not injure the latter.r
It will be seen from the foregoing that an exceptionally simple and inexpensive construction has been provided, yet that such construction will be desirable in a great number of ways. Onl account of the proven advantages of the exact details shown, they are preferably followed, but within the scope of the invention as claimed, numerous minor changes may be made.
I claim:
l. A jointed trace connecter comprising a trace-carrying member having an eye, a hame-carried member having side plates at opposite sides of said eye, said plates having bearing bosses extending into said eye to vpivotally connect the two members, and having their outer sides formed with countersinks coaxial withsaid bosses, the latter being formed with axial openings, and a rivet passing through said openings and having its ends disposed in said countersinks.
2. A jointed trace connecter Comprising a trace-carrying member having @n eye, a haine-carried member having -side plates at opposite sides of said eye, said plates being 5 inwardly stamped to provide their inner sides with bearing bosses for reception in said eye and to form their outer sides With oountersinks, said bosses having alined openings, and a rivet passing through said openings and Vhaving its vends received in said countersinks.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature.
FRANK E. SCHARTOVV.
