rownnrormmn DUMP (maria Application filed october 24, 1922. Serial No. 596,574.
To all whom it concern: .Be it known that I, EDWIN LUNDGREN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Frederick, county of Frederick, State of Maryland, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in PowerOperated Dump Grates, of which the following is a full clear, and exact description.
My invention relates todump, grates and more particularly toower operated dump grates for furnaces o the automatic stoker type, and has for its object to provide a dump grate of this character which is simple, strong and durable in construction, and reliable in operation. v
, The several features ,of the invention will be clearly understood from the following description and accompanying drawings, in which, I Figure 1 is a planview, partly in section, of a power operated dump grate with the dumping member thereof partly broken away, embodying the features of the invention in their preferred form;
partly in elevation, taken. on the line' 2-2 of Fig. 1; i
Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a. detail side elevation, partlyin section, of a portion of the mechanism illustrated in Fig.- 2, but with parts shown in a different position. i
he power operated dump grate illustrated in the drawings is provided with the usual dumping mem er 2 which is secured a at one end on a. rock-shaft 4. As shown one end of the rock-shaft extends through and 6, which is mounted on a frame 8 adapted .to be secured to a side wall of the furnace.
The actuating mechanism for the'dumping member comprises an arm 10 having one en secured on the end ofthe rock-shaft 4 and 2 its other end bifurcated so as to embrace a block 12 mounted on a horizontal piston rod 14 between c'ollars.16 and 18 secured on the rod. The block 12 is held from rotary movement. on the rod, but is permitted 'to slide longitudinally between the collars 16 and 18 by means of a suitable key 20. A latch pawl 22 is pivotally mounted at one end on a pin 24 secured to the supporting frame 8 and its free end is weighted and is provided with a latching shoulder 26-which Fig; 2 is a longitudinal sectional view,
is journaled in an adjustable bearing block surface of the'collar 18 to raise the pawl is adapted to engage the rear or left-hand the top of the bracket 30. The piston rod 5 I 14 extends through and is mounted for 'reciprocation in a bearing block 32 secured to the frame 8 and a bearin 34 in av steam cylinder 36. A piston 38 is secured to the rod and is mounted in the steam cylinder, the cylinder being" provided with intake ports 40 and 42 and with exhaust ports 44 and 46. The intake ports are adapted to be alternately opened and closed by means of a valve 48 and the exhaust orts are adapted to be alternately opened and closed by means of a valve 50. The valves 48 and 50 are adapted to be simultaneously actuated by means of a lever 52 pivoted at 54 on the steam cylinder and pivotally connected with a'link 58 midway between its ends, the ends of the link being pivotally connected with arms 60 secured to the valve stems.
Upon movement of the piston rod 14 forwardly or toward the right, viewing Fig. 2, the collar 16 by engagement with the rear face of the block 12 will act through the block and the arm 10 to swing the dumping member 2 into its closed or raisedv position as shown in Fig. 2. As the dumping member reaches its closed position the latch-pawl 22 is permitted to drop by gravity so as to bring its latching shoulder'26 back to therear face of the block 12, and thus the dumping member is securely held in closed position by the pawlafter the tension in the steam cylinder releases. Upon rearward movement of the piston rod 14 the pawl 22 is raised out of engagement with the block '12 as shown in Fig. 4 so as t0 permit the-dumping member to swing open by gravity. To provide for this the collar 18 is rounded over and the underside of the pawl 22 is provided with a roll 62 which is engaged by the rounded or cam during the first part of the rearward movement of the is'ton rod. The free end of the latchrpawl 22 is provided with an in-. clined surface 64 so as to enable the block 1,
- Fig. 2. the dumping 12 to'ride'beneath the pawl during the forward movement of the iston.
"From the foregoing it will be apparent that upon moving the hand-operated lever 52 downwardly to the position indicated; in
I member will be automatically released and permitted toi -swing open by gravity; and that upon vmoving the lever 52 upwardly the dumping member will be swung into closed position andse curely locked automatically in this position. In case the dumping member should not be swung completely openby ravity after the latch 22 is released and urin the rearward movement of the piston ro the collar 18 will be brought into en agement thereof or theuscope of the appended claims.
What I claim is: 1 y 1. A dumping deviceof the class described for a furnace having, in combination, a pivotally mounted dumping member capable of being swung into and out of closed position, and. a reciprocating fluid actuated piston and suitable connections for swin ing the dumping member into closed position during the movement of the piston in one direction, for automatically locking the member in said position, and for automatically releasing said member from said connections and permitting it to swing open by gravity upon movement of the piston in the opposite direction.
2. A1 dumping device of the class de-."
scribed for a furnace having, in. combination, a pivotally mounted dumping member capable of being swung. into and out of closed ositiom a reciprocating fluid actuated lston and suitable connections for swinging the dumping member-into closed positiomduringthe movement of the piston in one direction; a device for locking said member in closed position, and means car ried by the iston rod for releasing said device from t edumping member to permit the dumping memberto swin open by ravity during the movement 0 the piston n the opposite direction; -3'. A dumping device of the class de-' scribed for a furnace having, in c'ombina tion, a pivotally mounted dumping member capable of being swung into and out of.
