UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY KLER, F RANTOUL, ILLINOIS.
GRAIN DGOR.
Application tiled Ianuary'lf, 15324V Serial No. 685,86.
u To all whom it may concern:
. porting ,grain or the like.
The primary object of the invention is to provide means for automaticallyL folding and supporting the upper sections of grain doors, when the doors have been moved to 4 their open positions.
v Another important object of the invention is to provide a novel form of operating means which may be readily and easily operated from a point extcriorly of the car, the operating means beingsuch as will hold the doors in various positions of adjustment.
lll'fithy the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter de scribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevational View disclosing a car door constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional View through the car and door openings.
Figure 3 is an elevational view of the cable operating mechanism.
Figure 4 is a front elevational view thereof.
Referring to the drawings2 in detail, the reference character 5dcsignates a car which is supplied with thusiial. openings. Tracks 6 are secured adjacent to the side edges of the door openings; and asshown, each of these tracks includes an upper horizontal section 7. Y
Each ofthe doors includes a lower section 8 and an upper hinged section 9,c the lower section being supplied with rollers 10 adje` cent to its upper and lower edges, the rollers extending laterally from the door section to the position in the tracks so thatthe door will be held against` lateral movement at all times.
The upper section 9 ot each door, is relatively narrow and is held to its active position by the weight of the grain within the car. Brackets 11 are secured to the ceiling of the car and are arranged at points adjacentto the sides of the car doors, but centrally of the ceiling. Rods 12 connect. the brackets and provide supports for the rollers 13 that lic in the paths ot travel of the upper sections 9 of the doors, when the doors are moved to 'their open' or inactive positions, to the end that es Ithe sections 9 engage the rollers, they will he folded towards the lower section 8 of the door, and supported adjacent to the ceiling of the car. 1
Associated with each door is an operating mechanism which includcse cable 14 secured to the door at a point adjacent to the lower end of the door, from where the cable passes over the pulley l5 disposed adjacent to the upper end of the door, the cable passing over the pulley 16 arranged laterally of the door. The cable also passes over pulley 17 mounted in the support lS secured to the outer surface of the car, i rom where the pulley passes onto the drum 19 mounted within the housing 20.
Supported `on one end of the shaft that supports the drum 19 is a gear 2l that oper ates in the casing 2l that may be partially filled with grease to lubricatc the gearing.
The naar is operatedliv tlievorn'i Q2 can ried by the shaft 23, which shaft is supplied with an operating handle Q4 that has :i squared extremity 25 to bepositionedin the squared 4opening.: of the member 26 forming a part of the handle.
In order that the member 26 may be non mally held to the handle 24, a coiled spring 27 is provided. which spring has connection with the handle 24 at 28. the lower end of the coiled spring being connected to the 'member 26 so that the contractile force of the spring will tend to prevent displacement of the member 2G. From the foregoing it will be obvious that it' it'is desired to move the member, 2G to its inactive position, the
memberrnay by forcin the same downvvardly,` be disconnected rom the member 24 and slightly turned to a, position to bring the member 20 to a point under the ear proper and out of lthe Way of persons walking "near the car.
In operation, whenthe handle is operated,` the cable will be Wound on the drum 19l and the door associated therewith, moved upwardly, the upper sectiono'f the door engaging the roller 12 associatedtherewth to the end that the upper section .is folded rearwardly and the lowermost Settion moved to overlie the upper section. y
`I claim?" 1. In a car door construe-tion, a trackway th'e -upper section to swing rearwardly, and means for moving the door te its `active and inactiveV positions.V
2. In a car door construction, a trackway positioned adjacent t0 the door opening, n door movable in the trnckway, seid door ineluding an upper hinged section, bracket.
members within the ear and arranged adjacent to the upper ends of the traekway,
lying in tie path of travel of the door -to its 'open osition, said rollers adapted to support tie upper hinged section inA its open position, and means for operatz the door.
In testimony that I elmni the ouegong. as
my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presenee of two witnesses, v Y HENRYY KALER. Y Witnesses:
