To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED C. KRUE ER, a citizen of the United States, residin at Princeton, in the county of Green flake and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvement-s in Twisting Implements; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactjdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and. use the same, i
This invention relates to.a twisting implement of the general class used in connection with: the splicing of wires.
It is aimedto provide such an instru- .mentparticularly useful for linemen and adapted to twist'the usual sleeves with the wires in such, a manner as to eliminate mutilation thereof to an extent affecting their efficiency, M
Other objects are to provide a construction by the use of which the wires may be efficiently stretched, one in which the parts are adjustable to efliciently receive, hold and releasethesleeve and wires, and onehaving to effect the twisting.
. Still another objectis to provide a construction embodying the various details, combinations and arrangements of the parts novel relatively fixed-and movablemeans comprising the embodimentset forth in ac detailed in.,. Figure 2,'hasa stub, shaft 24 companying drawings.

Referringspecifically to the drawings, a cylinder or barrel is provided at'10having a longitudinal slot 11 extending from end to end thereof. Associatedwith the barrel 10 are attaching heads 12 and 13. The head 12 may consist of a ring 1 1 and. arms 15 of any suitable number, integral therewith, and integral wither fastened to the barrel 1().- Headl consists of a ring 16, acollar 17 of the same diameter as barrel'10, and arms 18 preferably integral with ring 16 and collar 17. Collar 17 has an elongated slot 18 extending from end to end thereof and alining with the slot 11.
Disposed withinthe barrel IOand collar 17 at the facing, ends thereof, are ring bearings 19, fixedin place as by means of set screws20 passed through said barrel and sleeve, respectively. In one face of the rings l9,bal ls or other bearings21 are journaled and-said rings 19 have outwardly flaring slots 22 in alinement with slots 11 and 18.
Atwistinghead or reel 23 as particularly journaled inthe rings 19 .and at each end of which. disks '25 are rigidly provided thereon. The facing surfacesof said disks 25 .engage;tl1e balls 2l with aview to reducing friction incidental to turning of the head 23' through the manipulation of a handle or arm 26, extendingrigidly from the stub shaft 2 1-. Also, the twistingh'ead 23 at both disks 25 and shaft 24 has an outwardly flaring slot 27 ,"capable of registrationwiththeslots 11, 18 and 22. It will be realizedthat the fastening of the rings 19 in place also secures the twisting head or. reel-28 and; the barrellO and attaching head 13' in place.
In the outer end of the barrel 10, a disk 28 is fitted having an outwardly flaring slot 29 in registry with the slot 11. Disk 28 is slidablje longitudinally within'the barrel 10 to the extent permittediby ,pinscaoradiating from and through elongated slots 31 provided through the barrel 10. Exteriorly of the barrel and in spaced relation to its periphery, a band 32 is fastened to form a means of engagement to readily slide said disk 28. Band 32 is slotted as at 33 in line with the slot 29.
The inner extremity of slot- 29 is B-shaped as at 34c, and in longitudinal alinement there with, the inner extremity of the slot 27 is 8-shaped as at 35. shoulders ar and 35 are provided in slots 34 and respectively.
'One example of the use of the tool is given in Figure 3. In that figure, the ends of wires to be joined are designated a. and Z). In joining them, preferably the usual 8-- shaped coupling sleeve 0 of the same thickness as shoulders 34? and 35 is utilized and with the size of which sleeve, cross-sectionally, the slots 34: and 35 correspond. A. wire grip d may be attached to the ring 16 and also rigidly to the wire a. A block a may be attached to the ring 14 and carry a pulley f over which a cable or flexible element 9 is trained. One end of cable g is preferably anchored independently of wire I). Wires av and b may beentered in their adjacent terminals in the sleeve 0 and with the disk 28 at the maximum distance from the adjacent disk 25. Such sleeve 0 is inserted through the slot 11 with the wires a and Z) accommodated in the slots 11, 18,
27, 29, 34 and 35. When the sleeve 0 is so positioned, it will be at the axis of the barrel and one end thereof may be slipped into the slot 35 while sliding movement of disk 28 toward the adjacent disk will cause the other end of said sleeve to be received in the slot 34. Sleeve 0 engages shoulders 34: and 35 so as to be held against danger of longitudinal displacement. Upon the free end of cable 9- being pulled, the wire a, will be tensioned, and by means of pliers or another tool the Wire will be tensioned so that it will enter the sleeve 0 to the maximum extent. With the sleeve 0 and wiresa and b coupled as suggested, handle 26 is rotated a suitable number of times which will cause rotation of the head 23 with respect to the disk 28 which remains relatively stationary and whereby the terminals of the wires and the sleeves 0 Will be effectively twisted together. It will be realized that during the entire twisting and coupling operation, that the sleeves and wires are accommodatedin the various slots substantially at the longitudinal center of the nnplement. After the twisting operation, the disk 28, through manipulation of band 82, may be slid away from the twistlng head, in order to release the sleeve 0 and thus enable the wires (1 and Z) and sleeve 0 to be disengaged from the tool. The flarmg of the slots 27, 22 and 29, facilitates entrance of the wires. I
It will be understood that other methods of use of the tool will be obvious and that it may be used in different arts from that stated, and for instance in comlection With the-stretching and splicing of said wires.
I claim as my invention 1. A, twisting implement having a barrel, a twisting head turnable with respect to the barrel, a disk non-rotatable with respect to the barrel and. adaptedto engage the work in connection with said head, said barrel having an elongated slot, and said disk being slidable and having a pin extending through said slot and exteriorly beyond the slot for engagement to operate the disk.
2. A twisting implement having a barrel, a work holding means on said barrel, a twisting head for the work movable with respect to the barrel. said barrel, head and means being slotted to enable wires to be substantially disposed at the axis of the barrel, and the inner extremities of the slots of said means and head being shaped to accommodate a wire-splicing sleeve and to provide shoulders for engagement with the end edges of the sleeve.
A twisting implement having a barrel, a work holding means on said barrel, a twisting head for the work movable with respect to the barrel, said barrel, head and means being slotted to enable wires to be substantially disposed at the axis of the barrel. the inner extremities of the slots of said means and head being shaped to accommodate a Wire-splicing sleeve and to provide shoulders for engagement by the end edges of said sleeve, and said means being movable longitudinally of the barrel to facilitate engagement and disengagement of the sleeve.
, 4. A twisting implement having a barrel,
a disk slidable in said barrel, said barrel having slots. pins extending through said slots. a band rigid with said pins exteriorly of the barrel, said band, barrel and disk having alined slots to accommodate the work, and a twisting head movable relatively to said barrel.
5. A twisting implement having a twisting head provided with a stub shaft, a barrel, a disk on said stub shaft disposed within the barrel, a bearing for said stub shaft carried by the barrel, a handle extending from the stub shaft, said bearing being located intermediate the handle and disk, and holding means for the work carried by said barrel.
6. A twisting implement having a barrel and an attaching head provided with a collar, a twisting head having a stubshaft, disks rigid with said stub shaft and disposed one at each end thereof and one Within the barrel and one within the collar, a manipulating handle extending from said shaft, bearings for said shaft located between. said handle and said disk, and said bearings being fixed on to the barrel and one to the collar, and holding means for the work carried by the barrel.
