RES
ADAM MAJIEWSKI, OF BUFFALO, NEXV YORK.
wrnpow.
Application filed August 5, 1922. Serial No. 579,813.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that L ADAM MAJnwsKI, a citizen of Poland residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New Yorlg have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Windows, ofwhich the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally "{to windows for houses, apartments or other build ings, the invention having particular reference to a window having a combination sash which can be moved vertically or swung inwardly, as desired, to open the window.
The invention has for an object to provide a novel and improved window of the above type, other specific features of the invention relating to the locking of the window in partially open position.
For further comprehension of the invention and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
Fig. 1 of the drawings is a perspective view showing the general arrangement of my improved window.
Fig. 2 is a face view of the window.
Fig. 8 is an enlarged fragmentary face view showing one of the side members of the type of window shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 1 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line i4 of Fig. 3. V
In the drawings I have indicated an ordinary window frame at 10 which supports for vertical sliding movement an upper sash 11 and a lower sash 12 which are guided in the usual manner and may be locked to gether by an ordinary catch15.
In carrying out my invention the glass panes, indicated. at 13 and 1 1-, are fixed in supplementary sashes or frames 16 and 17, which are of slightly smaller size than the respective sashes 11 and 12 and are fitted thereinto. These supplementary sashes are hinged at one side to the main sashes 11, 12 by hinges 19 and are provided with ordinary locking bolts 20 to lock them in closed position.
With this construction substantially the full window area may be utilized for ventilation if desired, by swinging open the supplementary sashes, while the main sashes may be raised and lowered in the usual extends along one side of the window frame passing through a suitable boring in the sash 12, this rod having formed therein a substantially longitudinal slot 26 having a slight helical inclination, the length of the slot 26 corresponding approximately to the distance the lower sash is to be raised.
Pivotally connected at one end as at 27 to one of the hinges 19 is a link 28 having a lateral offset or hook 29 on its opposite end which is adapted to engage in the slot 26, being normally urged thereinto by a spring 30 located in the recess 31 in the side member of the sash 12. in which recess the link 28 is accommodated. Threaded through the said side member is a screw 32 having a knuckled head 33 for adjusting purposes.
By reason of the oblique or helical inclination of the slot 26 the hinged sash 17 will be caused to swing on its hinges 19 in an opening direction as the main sash 12 is raised while the upward movement of the sash 12 is limited by the engagement of the hook 29 with the 'top ofsaid slot, limiting also the opening movement of the sash 17. If it is desired to completely raise the sash 12 the screw 32 is turned to lift the hook 29 out of the slot 26, permitting the sash 12 to be raised or lowered as desired. While the head 33 of this screw 32 is diiiicult of access from the exterior I may in place of this head form a socket in the end of the screw, necessitating the use of a key to turn the same.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows: i
1. In a window, a vertically slidable sash a supplementary pane carrying sash hinged thereto, and means whereby said hinged sash is caused to open upon vertical movement of said first sash.
2. In a window, a vertically slidable sash, a supplementary pane carrying sash hinged thereto, and a common locking means for locking each of said sashes when in partially open position against further opening movement.
3. In a window, a vertical element having a heli'cally inclined longitudinal slOtthere in, a vertically slidable sash, a supplementary pane carrying sash hinged thereto, and;
a member carried by said hinged sashand normally engaging said slot to cause said hinged sash to swing as the first sash moves vertically.
4. In a window, a vertical element having a helically inclined longitudinal slot therein, a vertically slidable sash, a supplementary pane carrying sash hinged thereto, and a member carried by said hinged sash and normally engaging said slot to cause said hinged sash to swing as the first saslr 'inoves vertically, and means for disengaging said member from said slot. v
5, In awindow, a vertically slidable sash, a vertical fixed rod at the side of the window and passing through the side eleinent of said sash and formed with a helically inclined longitudinal slot; a supplementary; pane carrying sash hinged to the first sash, and a'link hinged at one end to the second sash and having a hooked oifset on its other end engaging in the said slot.
, G. In a window, a vertically slidable sash, a vertical fixed rod at the side of the window and passing through the side element of said sash-and formed with a helically inclined longitudinal. slot," a supplementary pane carrying sash hinged to the first sash, and
a link hinged at one end to the second sash andhavinga hooked offset on its other end enga ing in the said slot, and a screw threaded into the first sash and adapted to bear against said link to lift said ofi's'et from said slot.
In testimony whereof I have affixedmy signature.
