ToavZZ whom t may concern Be it known that I, JAMEs DE BLAsio, citizen of the United States, vresidin'o` vat Dunbar, in the county of Fayette and btate of Pennsylvania, have invented .certain new and useful Improvements in Safety ,Quick-- Fire Mines, of which the following is a specification. y e
This invention relates to explosive tmines or blasting cartridges and'more p'ar-Iticularly to a novel improvement therein whereby the risks and hazards of lstoringor handling are reduced to a minimum.
Accordingly, a primary object of the invention is to provide a safety minewhich is susceptible of being quickly 'fired when properly emplaced for use and yet ygive a wide margin of safety to the user during the prelfiminary handling and after ignition of the use. Another and important object of the invention is to provide a mine or cartridge which is completely assembled and which is in readiness for instant use.
A further object is to provide a blasting cartridge which includes l*a metal holder for the explosive charge havingr a removable closure cap for facilitating loading y,ofthe holder with the eXplosive miitu're, the said holder being provided with a vwaterproef covering to insure the contents ragainst moisture and dampness. In connectionfwiththe metal holder it may alsobe pointed out that the detachable closure cap for the holder carries therewith a safety fuse having one end in direct contact with the 'explosive miX- ture.
A still further object is to p ovide a cartridge including a'holder and an elongated fuse normally -coiled there'about in compact relation, and held in such relation by a fracturable band or collar while being handled and yet readily available for extension and emplacement upon breaking the holding band by using the specially equipped free end as a handle. That is to say, the free end of the fuse is provided with a removable cover for protecting the same from dampness and which may be readily removed immediately prior to the ignition thereof, but which before removal constitutes a handle for conveniently gripping the fuse to cause it to rupture the holding band or collar previously referred to. n

Like reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several ngures of the drawings.
In both forms of my invention yas shown i inthe accomp'aying drawings', I have provided a blasting cartridge which includes a tubular container 5 having a closed lower end 6 and an' open upper end 7., the latter being closed by a cap 8 which has threaded" engagement with the holder. The said lh'olderis purposely made of metal of sufficient thickness `and strength to withstand crushing pressure and to prevent the charge or mixture from exploding caused by jarring.` As for the mixture itself it may consist of a suitable `proportion of aluminiim, potassium chlorate and sulphur, or a lcombination of potassium chlorate, black powdered antimony and sulphur, either of which have been found especially adapted to this type of cartridge.
In order to render the charge clamp-proof, I have provided the holder with a sealed covering 9 of water-proof paper.
In the form illustrated in Figures l to 4, I ignite the charge through the medium of a fuse 10 whereas in the form illustrated in Figures 5, 6 and 7 I ignite the charge through the medium of electrical conductor leads 11-11. The fuse 10 and leads 11 con stitute elongated conductors. One end of the fuse 10 is passed through an opening 12 formed in the cap 8 andthis end projects into the interior of the holder and has direct Contact With the explosive charge. This inner end of the tuse is held against outward movement by means of a pin 13 which passes through the fuse and is adapted to bear against the end Wall of the cap. The ends ot' the leads 11 extend through a slot 14C which extends downwardly from the upper edge of the holder and the ends of these leads arc electrically connected With an eX- plosive cap 15 which I have shown more or less diagrammatically.
In each form the elongated conductor is coiled lengthwise around the holder, and this coil is held in its compact relation against the holder by means ot a fracturable band or collar 16 which I preferably 'form from paper, said collar extending transversely around the holder and consequently in a plane at right angles to the general plane of the coiled conductor.
The outer or free end of the fuse 10 has inserted therein a primary ignition fuse 17 and this end of the fuse is normally covered and thereby protected against dampness by means of a covering 18 which is preferably formed of Waterproof paper. A. sleeve 19 preferably formed of heavy paper or cardboard is disposed between the covering 18 and the fuse and serves not only to protect the end of the 'fuse 10 but also to protect the initial or primary fuse 17 from accidental harm. The outer end ot the protector 18 is twisted as at 20 to form a seal for the protector.
From the foregoing, it will be observedv that the cartridge is previously loaded so that the operator is not in danger by having to load the saine. It Will be noted that the holder and the elongated conductor for igniting the explosive charge are held in a very compact relation so that it Will occupy but very little space and that the cartridge is ready for immediate use by the operator by simply taking hold of the covering -18 at the free end of the conductor and using it as a handle to sever the fracturable collar which holds the conductor in its coiled relation about the holder, thereby releasing the same for use.
The protector 18 is, of course, detached after performing its service as a manipulating handle and in connection with the protector or hood 18 for the ignitible end ot the fuse, it will, of course, be understood that after the protector has performed its function as a manipulating handle tor causing the fuse to rip or rupture the holding band or collar, it may be removed so as to expose the primary fuse 17.
Without further description it is thought that the features and advantages ot the invention Will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art, and it will, ot course, be understood that changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to, Without departing from the spirit of the invention and scope ot the appended claims.

1. In a blasting cartridge, the con'ibination With a holder for containing anexplosive charge, ot an elongated conductor connected with said holder for igniting said charge, said conductor being coiled around the holder, and a fracturable means embracing said coiled conductor for retaining the latter in'compact relation to the holder.
2. In a blasting cartridge, the combination With a tubular holder for containing an explosive' charge, of an 'elongated con- `ductor` connected With said holder for igniting said charge, said conductor being coiled longitudinally around the holder, and a fracturable means extending around the coiled conductor and holder.
3. In a blasting cartridge, the combination With a holder for containing an explosive charge, of a :fuse connected with said' holder for igniting said charge, and a protective cap mounted on the free end ot said fuse, said protective cap being formed from Waterproof paper.
