UNITEDSTATES LESLIE A. VANDIVER, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
HOLDER.
Application filed May 10, 1922. Serial No. 559,843.
To alt whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lnsnrn A. VANDIVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Holder, of which the following is a specification.
By way of explanation it may be stated that it is the common practice in dentistry, to anchor or secure the dam externally, the result being that a considerable amount of dam is used and wasted, a further result being that the patient not infrequently is subjected certainly to inconvenience and discomfort, and often to pain, by the means for holding the dam in place.
The foregoing being understood, it may be stated that this invention aims to provide a simple means whereby the dam may be held, for the most part, or entirely within the mouth of the patient, a minimum amount of dam being used, and the patient being subjected to none of the inconvenience or pain which results from anchoring the dam externally.
Another object of the invention is to provide a dental dam having a reflecting surface, to the end that the operator may be afforded added light.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view, which will. appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention;
In the drawings Figure '1, shows in vertical section, one form of dGVliG constructed in accordance with. the invention, the same being located in the mouth of the patient; Figure 2 is an elevation of the structure shown in Figure 1, out of the mouth of the patient; Figure 3 is a fragmental plan showing a slight modification; Figure 4 is a plan showing a modified. form of the invention; Figure 5 is a section on the line 55 ofFigure 4; and Figure 6 is a section on the line 6-6 of Figure 4.
In carrying out the invention as contemplated in Figures 1 and 2, there is provided a frame, denoted generally by the numeral 1, and ordinarily in the form of a plate, fashioned from metal or any other suitable substance having the necessary rigidity.
The frame 1 includes an intermediate body 2 and forwardly extended wings 3 at the opposite ends of the body, the wings preferably being disposed at an obtuse ass-e to the body. In the body 2 and in the wings 3, arcuate openings at are formed. Tongues 5 and 6 are fashioned integrally with the body 2, and projectin opposite directions into the openings 4, the tongues being disposed at an acute angle to the body and being inclined in a direction opposite'to that in which the wings 3 extend. At their ends and at their sides, the wings 3 are provided with apertured lugs 7 shown most clearly in Figure 3, although Figure 3 discloses a inodification having nothing to do with the ugs.
The rubber dam 8 is placed behind the body 2 and is carried forwardly along the wings 3, the dam being punched, so that the lugs 7 may extend therethrough, the dam being folded backwardly upon the wings 3, as shown at 9. Clamps 10 are slipped over the ends of the wings, to aid in holding the dam, the clamps having openings 11 receiving the end portions of the wings.
In Figure 2, the clamps 10 are shown as separable. In Figure 3, parts hereinbefore described have been designated by numerals previously used, with the suffix a. In this form of the invention, the clamps 10a are pivoted at 12 to the wings 3a.
The dam 8 is punched to receive the teeth 14:, or the tooth, to be filled. The frame 1 is located partly in. the mouth of the patient, the wings 3 projecting outwardly, as shown in Figure 1, the openings 4- serving to receive the upper and lower teeth, aii'd the tongues 5 and 6, the tongue 5 in the application shown in Figure 1 serving to stretch the dam to the arch of the mouth.
The construction of the device, obviously, is such that ordinary anchoring means for the dam may be dispensed with. The frame 1, when in the position shown in Figure 1, serves-as a jaw rest for the patient.
Especial attention is directed to the fact that the dam 8 is covered with a light refleeting substance, such as aluminum, which aids the operator in his (work.
The device as above described is adapted to be used for anterior teethgbut When posterior te'ethare to be filled,'rec'ourse maybe had to the structure shown in Figures 4, 5
which may be of rectangular outline, the
frame having lugs or prongs 16. The frame" is provided at its ends with bosses 17, fac1l- U itating the handling of the frame. shaped clamps 18 are pivoted at 19 to the frame 15 and m'ayb'eprovid'ed 'With openings 20 for the reception of the lugs 01' prongs 16f The da m'ii l is placed across and folded upon the frame 15 and is held t l'iere'o'n 'bythe -prongs ldan'd by theclamps 18. The
dam 21 is punched for tlie'receptionof the tooth '22, the dam beinghe'l'd'aboutthe tooth by an ordinary clzimp23whi'ch is not'described in detail because it is a standard article of manufacture, the"construction and operation ofwhic'lr-is well undejr'st'ood'by d'ei'itis'ts. The 'tooth'22 projects throughthe opening 24 in'the frame 15, and through the dam 21, as shown'in Figure 5, the cavity in the tooth, which is to be filled, obviously being kept a dry condition. The dam 21 has a reflecting. surface, as hereinbe'fore described.
lVhat is claimed is 1. In a device of the "class described, a frame comprising a body havlng Wings, and
'provided with openings adjacent the base of and 6, wherein there is disclosed a frame 15,
said wings, the frame having a dam stretching tongues cooperating with the openings.
2. In a device of the class described, a frame including a body having forwardly presented wings at the upper and lower ends thereof, the body having atooth receiving opening adjacent each wing, and dam hold- 'ing means on the frame.
5.111 a device of "the class described, a frame comprising a body provided with forwardly presented wings, the frame having tooth receii 'ing openings extended into the wings, and being provided with rearwardly inclined dam-stretching tongues, cooperating with the openings; and dam-holding means carried by the frame.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
