Description
E. B. GOULD.
Flocking-Machines.
Patented April 7,1874.
WITNESSES I mvsmm MM ATTOBNEYS..
PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN C. GOULD, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN FLOCKlNG-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,390, dated April 7, 1874; application file January 31, 1874.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that" I, EDWIN C. GOULD, of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Flocking, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a top view of aportion of a clothcoating and flocking machine illustrating my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, partly in section, through the line 00 m, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
' The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
A represents the lower part of the framework of the machine, in which the cement or paste and the flock are applied to the cloth. B is the cloth, which passes from the deliveryroller around a guide-roller, C, in the lower rear part of the frame A, up along the rear end, over a roller or guide-bar, D, in the upper rear corner of the frame A, below the edge of the knife E, by which the cement or paste is spread evenly over the said cloth, and over the roller F, placed a little in front of the knife E. The edge of the knife or spreader E projects a little below the top of the rollers D F, so that it may bear firmly upon said cloth, and spread the cement evenly over it. From the rollerF the cloth passes beneath the flock-box G, from which the flock is sifted upon it. From the flock-box G the cloth B passes over a guideroller, H, at the upper forward corner of the frame A, down along the forward end of said frame, around a roller, I, at its lower forward part, through the lower part of the said frame,
and thence to the mechanism by which it is him g upon the drying-racks, which mechanism is not shown in the drawing. J is a shaft, which revolves in bearings in the rear part of the frame A, and to one end of which power is applied from the driving-shaft by a belt and pulleys. To the other end of the shaft J is attached a pulley, K, around which passes a belt, L, which also passes around a pulley, M,
attached to the shaft N, which revolves in bearings in the middle part of the frame A, and to the other end of which is attached a short crank, O, to which is pivoted one end of a connecting-rod, P, the other end of which is pivoted to the longer crank Q, attached to the end of the shaft R, which oscillates in bearings in the upper forward part of the frame A. The cranks O Q are made of such a relative length that the revolution of the shaftN will only rock the shaft It. To the shaft R are attached two pairs of arms, S, projecting from its opposite sides. To the ends of each pair of arms S is attached a bar, plate, or striker, T, the edges of which strikers, when the shaft R rocks or oscillates, strike against the under side of the cloth B as it passes from the flock-box or sifter G to the roller H. The striker-bars T should strike the cloth B in as nearly a perpendicular direction as possible, and the effect of their action is to straighten the flock, spread it evenly over the cloth B, and at the same time knock off the surplus flock.
The oscillating striker 1t S T renders the roller unnecessary by which, in the original machine, the flock was pressed down upon the cloth, and produces a better article than when said roller was used. c
The striker is designed to be driven directly from the driving-shaft, in the manner herein shown and described, or in any other suitable manner so as to give it a very rapid movement.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patenty' j' The combination, in a machine for coating and flocking cloth, of shaft M, rod 1, rock- .shaft B, pairs of arms S S, and vibratory plates T T, as and for the purpose described.
EDXVIN C. GOULD.
