Description

- w. BARRON ET AL ANNEALING POT E iled Sept. 5 1922 Patented May 13, 1924.
WEILLIAM BARRON AND CHARLES A. BARRON, F PRESTON, ENGLAND.
ANNEALING POT.
Application filed September 5, 1922. Serial No. 586,294.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAMBARRON and CHARLES A. BARRON, subjects of the King of- Great Britain, residing at Preston,
in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Annealing Pots, of w lowing is a specification.
hioh the folis invention relates to pots in which metals are annealed or otherwise treated by heat without becoming tarnished, and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the scribed and claimed.
parts hereinafter fully de- 1 The drawing shows a vertical section through an annealing pot constructed ac-v cording to this invention.
- The pot a is of any approved construction, and it has a removable lid 0. The lid preferably has a flange c downwardly into sand '7) in which projects a groove a around the top edge of the pot, so as to make a gas-tight oint.
A lifting plate 2' rests OIl-the bottom of 2a the pot, and is provided with z having an eye 2' at its top.
a lifting rod A hood h is arranged inside the pot to cover the articles being treated. This hood rests on the lifting vplate, and its top h a through which the eye projects A receptacle j for charcoal as a hole 7a, or other purifying agent, is provided around the said eye, and j are perforations in that portion of'the top of the hood which forms the bottom of the said receptacle. The lid 0 has a tubular projection Z secured to it, and provided with a passage m for gas, and a conical outer surface m. plpe n for the adm1ss1on of a non-oxidlzinggas', such as or- 40 dinary illuminating gas,
weight 0 which has a conical ch ed to fit closely over the conic so as to make a gas-tight joint.
is secured to a amber adapta lifting The weight and gas pipe are prefer-ably removed during the heating process. The charcoal in the receptacle 7', coupled with the natural issue through the perforations of the gases formed in the hood as the result of the heating, prevents any ingress of air to the hood during the heating operation. When the heating is completed the weight and gas pipe are placed in position, and a supply of non-oxidizing gas is connected to the pipe. The space or chamber formed between the hood and the sides of 5! the pot and its lid is filled with the nonoxidizing gas, which is drawn into the hood through the charcoal, or other purifying agent in the receptacle j, as the cooling proceeds. The metal articles being treated -or annealed inside the hood are in this manner kept bright and are prevented from oxidizing.
What we claim is: I 1. An annealing pot provided with a lid,
plate resting on the pot, a hood resting on the said plate and forming a gas chamber with the pot and lid, and means for admitting a non-oxidizing gas through V the said chamber into the hood. 7.0
2. An annealing pot asset forth in claim 1, andhaving at the top of the said hood a receptacle for a purifying agent having a perforated-bottom which permits the passage of gases between the interior of the,75 hood and the said chamber.
3. An annealing pot as set forth in claim 1 and having a conical tubular projection on its lid, and an inlet pipe for the gas pro ber' which fits over the conical projection and forms with it a gas-tight joint.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures. WM. BARRON. C. A. BARRON.
