UNITED STATES PATENT OFFI(IE.
MARTIN MANNION, 0F PERTH AMBOY, NEW JERSEY, AND ROBERT C. ARTHUR, 0F TOTTENVILLE, STATEN ISLAND, NEW YORK.
WRENCH.
Application filed November 29, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that MARTIN MANNION and ROBERT C. ARTHUR, citizens of the United States, residing at 295 Neville Street, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, State of New Jersey, and 547 7 Arthur Kill Road, Tottenville, Staten Island, county of Richmond, State of New York, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wrenches. It is designed for the removal of threaded tubes, such as ferrules, nipples or pipe or of threaded projections or dowels from the female threads.
The object is to supply a wrench which will enable an operator to remove a threaded ferrule which may or may not have been partly broken off, or to remove projections which have one end screwed into a ferrule thread and are usually countersunk, or the removal of parts of a screw which remains in a shaft coupling but the head thereof has been chipped or broken off.
The invention, therefore, consists of the improved construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed and as shown in the accompanying drawing illustrative of the preferred embodiment of our invention, reserving the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of our invention.
Referring to the drawings:
.Fig. 1 shows a longitudinal view of our invention in which a male wrench is about to be forced into a ferrule d in a tube sheet in order to remove the ferrule.
Fig. 2 is a central cross-section of Fig. 1 with the ferrule a and condenser head A. removed.
In the drawings:
A is the wrench which has a radiating outer surface, as shown in Fig. 2, and internal radiating cutters or blades A This form of wrench is suitably fastened to a handle B with a screw 6.
The handle B has two transverse holes, I), 6" preferably about at right angles to each other to receive an operating bar, not shown, for unscrewing a ferrule, etc., when the teeth have sharply cut into or upset the inner surface of the ferrule.
In Fig. 2 the wrench and its handle are shown in section. The wrench may be se- Seria1-No. 518,583.
be serrated or roughened as to enable it to take hold of the element to be removed, provided the wrench, when driven upon said element, can be unscrewed.
Our wrench can be used to remove the male thread of a nipple thread or pipe from the female thread, and, while it is desired and capable of use under various conditions, it is especially adapted for removing a ferrule when the exposed threads have been broken or twisted oif.
The wrench is also adapted for use for removing a plug when its shoulder has been broken off. The wrench and its handle and operating bar are each made of suitable metal.
The wrench is removable from the handle and is interchangeable with wrenches of different sizes and different bevels.
The wrench is driven with more or less force upon the element to be removed in order to secure the necessary rigid connection.
It is obvious that the wrench may be made of different lengths in order to make one wrench adapted for use on members of varying diameters.
We claim:
1. A wrench comprising a fixed conical portion having an external frictional surface for driving engagement with an object to be gripped and adapted to rotate said object, and a handle affixed thereto and in relatively non-rotatable relation therewith.
2. A wrench comprising a fixed conical portion having external gripping serrations for driving engagement with an object to be gripped and adapted to rotate said object and a handle secured to said conical portion in relatively fixed non-rotatable relation therewith.
3. A wrench comprising a fixed conical portion having an external gripping surface for driving engagement with an object to be gripped and a handle inserted therein and in relatively non-rotatable relation there- With.
4. A Wrench comprising a fixed conical portion having external gripping teeth for driving engagement with an object to be gripped and adapted to rotate said object, ahandle inserted in said conical portion in relatively non-rotatable relation therewith and means for removably securing said handle to said conical portion.
5. A Wrench comprising a fixed conical.
portion having an externally serrated frictional gripping surface for driving engagement With an object to be gripped and adapted to rotate said object, a handle inserted in said conical portion in relatively non-rotatable relation therewith, and means for removably securing said handle to said conical portion.
In testimony whereof they aflix their signatures.
MARTIN MANNION. ROBERT C. ARTHUR.
