Be it known that I, HARRY K. Droxnn- MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the .county of Erie and 5 State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box Machines, of which the following is a full, cle-ar, an'd exact description, such as will ena-ble others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to machines to be utilized in the manufacture of paper boxes and with respectto its more specific features to automatically operated power driven machines of thi-s character.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved. machine of this character in which all the operations are performed antomatically.
Another object is to provide an improved machine of this character in which there is provided an improved form ofpress to assemble two elements of a box together.
Another object is to provide an improved 25 and automatically acting means to convey the various elements of the box to the press.
Another obj-ect is to provide an improved and automaticallv acting means to hold the various elements oit the box toinsure proper action thereon by the press.
Another object is to provide an improved and automaticallyT acting means for disengaging and discharging the completed boxes from the press.
Another object is to provide an improved and eiiicient means tor automatically assembling the various elements ot' the boxes to be joined. Y
Another object is to provide an improved torni ot combined glue drying heater and press.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
The invention accordingly consists in the Vfeatures ot construction, combina-tions ot 'elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinatter set forth, and the scope of the application ot' which will be indicated in the following claims.

The .machine illustrated in the drawings is adapted to glue elements ot a box together. In the present embodiment, these elements include a. box portion 14 and a face-piece l5 as shown in Fig. ll. Together they form the cover of a box used for containing material such as tace powder or other such material. Usually such boxes are provided with a more or less ornamentally decorated exterior. Each portion ot the box` is made fundamentally ot compa "t tively stili paste-board or similar material.
The sides of the box are then covered with a suitable ornamental paper which extends over the edges and partly over `the top. TheI .face-piece which has substantially the same dimensions as the top surface ot the box and which is also made ot' pasteboard, is also covered with similar paper on one side with the edges of the paper extending over the edges and for a short distance on the under side. In the finished box the vface-piece is superpose-d ony the box with s Il" s.,
the edges coinciding and glued in suchv position by suitable means such as the machine herein described.
It will be noted that, in assembling the box elements above described, the edges of the face-piece and the box coincide and preferably very accurately. In order to produce this result a number of difficulties may be encountered. One such difficulty consists in placing the two parts together Without relative sidewise movement which might tend to smear the glue onto the paper thereby spoiling the appearance of the box. Another difficulty is found in properly drying the glue without warping the top of the box. In overcoming these difficulties the hereindescribed en'ibo-diment of the invention automatically carries the two elements of the box to a press, keeping them separated the While, and places them. in superposed relation, in exact alignment and in engagement with means to hold them separated. One of the elements of the box has previously had glue applied on the face by which it is to be attached to the other element. By the action of the press these elements are assembled and heated to dry the glue. In order to hasten the drying of the glue, one of the press elements is perforated to permit the escape of vapor generated by the heat. Having been thus substantially dried, the likelihood of warping of the parts is very slight.
It will be noted that the stiffness and thickness of the face-pieces are in some respects an advantage in handling them. These qualities are utilized in holding the box elements apart at the press where they are grasped by means engaging their' side edges. and in feedingthe face-pieces one at a time from a suitable magazine in which they are placed. y
The machine comprises a means for feeding the boxes 14 successively to a position underlying a magazine containing a number of correspon-ding face-pieces 15 stacked vertically; a device for applying the glue to the box portions 14 in transit to such position; and a means which removes the face portion 15 and a corresponding box portion 14 from their respective supply device and carries them to position at a press where the box portion and its face-piece are pressed together and dried and then removed from the press by pressure of the next succeeding box thereagainst.
The supply device for conveying the boxes to position adjacent the face-pieces comprises a belt conveyor 16 on which the box portions 14 are placed by hand. Belt conveyor 16 is provided with an idler pulley 17 and a power driven pulley 18 over which the belt 16 is stretched. Pulley 18 is driven by means of a chain 19. associating a sprocket 19 with a corresponding sprocket 20 on a shaft 21 connected through a suitable clutch 22 to a belt driving pulley 23 associated with the main driving motor 24. The belt conveyor 16 is enclosed on two sides by a frame which serves as a supporting means for pulleys 17 and 18. Frame 25 also serves to keep the box portion 14 from sliding ofl' the sides of belt conveyor 16. Belt conveyor' 16 is of sutlicient length to extend well outward from the rest of the working parts of the machine so that the operator may conveniently place boxesr thereon.
Frame 25 is supported by suitable bracket 26 bolted thereto which is, in turn, supported on the main table 27 of the machine. Main table 27 is provided with suitable legs or braces 28 of any suitable character to formv a rigid support therefor.
Then placed on the belt conveyor 16, the box portions are carried to a position underlying a cross-piece 29 where they are held against further motion in this direction. Superposed directly above this position, there is bolted to the cross-piece 2f) and a similar cross-piece 30, four angular upright members 31 forn'iing four corners of a rectangular magazine of skeleton form which is adapted to receive a number of face-pieces with that side down which is to be glued to the box portion. As they lie vin the supply magazine formed by the members 31, the face-pieces register exactly with the box portion lying under them on the belt conveyor 16.
As a means for applying glue to the upper V'surface of the box portion, there is provided a vertically reciprocatory pad 82 extending over the belt conveyor 16. This pad is adapted to descend on the boxes as they successively pass beneath its position. They are prevented from being lifted oft the conveyor by means of inwardly projecting members or strippers 33 integrally formed on the frame 25. The vertical reciprocation of pad 32 is accomplished by means of a cam 84 operating against cam follower on rod 36 on whichpad 32 is supported. Cam 84 is mounted on ay shaft 87 which is provided with a sprocket 38 connected with another sprocket 39 by means of chain 40. Sprocket 39 is mounted on shaft 4l which also carries a sprocket 41 connected by means of a chain 43 lo sprocket 42 mounted on shaft 2l.
At 44 there is indicated a pan .filled with a suitable glue or paste to be applied to the pad 32 and, thereby, to tbe box portions 14. Partly covered by the glue in pan 44 is a roller 45 constantly rotating and transferring glue to another roller 46. the two rollers being directly connected by gears 47. The recprocatory motion of roller 48 is accomplished by means of an arm 49 attache-d thereto at one end and at the other end connected with a bell crank 50 pivotally supported on table 27, and a cam 5l operating against a cam follower 52 associated with the bell crank 50. Cam 51 is suitably mounted on shaft 37 and operates in synchronism with cam 34 controlling pad 32.
For feeding the box elements to the press, there is provided a member 53 slidably mounted between cross-pieces 29 and 30 by means ofprojeeting beads '54, and to which on its lower side `is suitably attached an angular piece 55 extending from one end te approximately the width of box` portion 1st from the other `end of member 53. .Member 53 is adapted t0 slide back and forth transversely of the directionr of vbelt conveyor 16. .As it moves forward, it removes a box from the conveyor and pushes it in a' guide-'way formed by inwardy projections at. the extreme bottom of cross-pieces 2.9 and 30. At the upper surface of member 53, a portion of the surface to the depth of the thickness of a face-piece 15 is cutaway to a point 56 directly above the .end of member 55 'at which point there is formed a In its movement carrying a box from conveyor 1G, member 53 also removes a face-piece from `the magazine keeping them in exactly the same relative position as before, that is, in registry therewith. ln this superposed relation. the box and .its face-piece are removed the length of motion of member 53, whereupon that member returns leaving them for the further operation of attachment. Upon such removal, the face-piece does not drop but is held between a pair of spring members 57 supported on the sides 0f the'cross- pieces 29 and 30. Spring members 57 are shown in detail in Fig. 10. It will be seen that, by pressure exerted against its tlat length. spring member 57 will be pushed bach into the slot 53 which is substantially equal in depth to the thickness of the spring. The natu-ral tendency is for the spring to press outwardly and it therefore frictionally grips the sides of the face-piece pressing th-ereagainst to hold it from returningwith member 53. and,
when the supportatforded by that member is withdrawn these springs hold the facepiece from falling.
The reciprocating motion of member 53 is imparted thereto by a bell crank- 9 operated by a cam 60 mounted on shaft 41. and a cam follower 61. Return motion caused by the tension of the spring 62 on bell crank 59 and its associated cam follower 61.
In order to .prevent more than one facepiece, at a time, from being removed from the magazine by member 53, there is provided a stop member 63 rigidly supported on members 31. Stop member 63 is adjusted s@ that it allows one face piece to pass therebeneath and withholds the remaining face-pieces.
At the position in which the box portion and its corresponding face-piece are placed by they member 53, there is provided a press which comprises a reciprocating plunger and a plate towards which the plunger is adapted' to move for the purpose 0f pressing the glued surface of the box `against the corresponding face-piece to thereby assemble said piece and box.

In order to adjust the press elements. cross-pieces 29 and 30 and plate 66 which is mounted thereon are provided `with an adjusting screw l70 andl a hand-wheel 71 by which the proper separation may be effected.

Thus by the above construction are accomplished among others the objects previously mentioned.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently Widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is also to be understood that the language used in the following claims is intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described and all-statements of the scope of the. invention, which. as a matter of language, might be said to fallv therebetween.
I-Iaving described my invention, what Iv claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. In a machine of the chaiacter described, in combination, a press, and means adapted to feed box elements into spaced superposed relation in the press.
2. Inv a machine of the character de-y scribed, in combination, a press, means adapted to feed box elements into spaced superposed relationin the press, and means whereby actuation of the press presses said elements together.
3. In a machine of the character described, in combination, a press, means adapted to feed box elements into super posed relation in the press, one ofthe press ing elements of the press having one or more passageways leading to the space between the press elements, and means adapted to heat said pressing element.

In a machine of the character described, in combination, a press, means adapted to feed box elements into superposed relation in the press, means whereby actuation of the press presses said elements together, one of the pressing elements of the press having one or more passageways leading to the space between the press elements, and means adapted to heat said pressing element.
5. In a machine of the character described, in combination, a press, means adapted to feed box elements into spaced supei'posed relation in the press, means whereby actuation of the press presses said elements together, one of the pressing elements of the press having one or more passageways leading to the space between the press elements, and means adapted to heat said pressing element.
6. In a machine of the character described, in combination, a press, means adapted to feed box elements into spaced scope with one of said box elements, one ofJ the pressing elements of the press having one or more passageways leading to the space within the press, and means adapted to heat saidpressing element.
8. In a machine of the character de scribed, in combination, a press, means adapted to feed box elements into spaced superposed relation in the press, one of the 'pressing elements comprising a reciprocal head adapted to telescope with one of said boxy elements, and a box element stripper relative to which said head moves.
9. In a machine of the character described, in combination, a press, means adapted to feed box elements into superposed relation in the press, and means adapted to frictionally grip one of said box elements for retaining it in predetermined position in the press chamber.
10. In a machine of the character dcscribed, in combination, a box supply de vice, a face-piece supply device, a box gluing device, a press, and means adapted to feed boxes and face-pieces from said supply devices intoy the press, said feeding means including devices for supportingl the respec tive boxes and face-pieces in spaced relation while being fed.

In a machine of the character de scribed, in combination, a box supply de vice, a face-piece supply device, a box glu ing device, a press, and means adaptedi to feed boxes and face-pieces from said supph` devices into the press,'said feeding means including devices for supporting the respeetive boxes and face-pieces in'spaced relation while being fed, the box supporting feed device including a reciprocal face-piece carrier.

In a machine of the character described, in combination, a box supply device, a face-piece supply device, a box gluing device, a press, and means adapted to feed boxes and face-pieces from said suppl)` devices into the press, said feeding means including a face-piece carrier and a box pusher adapted to maintain alignment and separation of the facespieces Yand boxes while being fed.
13. In a machine of the character described, in combination, a belt conveyor for scribed, in Combination, a belt conveyor for boxes, a box gluing device, a magazine for face-pieces in superposed relation to `said conveyor, a face-piece. carrier, and a box pusher cri-operative therewith, said carrier being movable between said conveyor and` said magazine and adapted to maintain the tace-pieces apart 'from the boxes.
l5. In a machine of .the character described, in combination, a belt conveyor for boxes, a magazine for face-pieces in superposed relation lto said conveyor,a face-piece carrier, and a box pusher co-'opera-tive therewith, said carrier and said pusher being movable between said conveyor and said magazine and adapted to remove abox and a race-piece from said conveyor and said magazine respectively and including means to maintain the box and the face-piece so removed in spaced relation.

A machine for applying face-pieces to boxes including, in combination, a magazine adapted to sup-port the face-pieces in a pile, a piece and box assembling press, a box gluer, means adapted to convey boxes one by one into and out of operative relation to said gluer and thereafter convey the previously glued box, and a face-piece therefor from said magazine, into superposed relation to each other in said press, and mechanism for actuating said press, said press including a perforated pressing plate adapted to contact said face-piece an means adapted to heat said plate.
32. A machine for applying face-pieces to boxes including, in combination, a maga zine adapted to support the face-pieces in Aa pile, a piece and box assembling press, a
box gluer, means adapted'to convey boxes one by one into and out yof operative relation to said gluer and thereafter convey the previously glued boxv1 and a face-piece therefor from said magazine, into superposed relation to each other in said press, and mechanism for actuating said press, said press including a perforated pressing plate adapted to contact said facepiece and means adapted to heat said plate, and a reciprocal pressing plunger fitting the interior of said box.
33. A machine for applying fai-@pieces to boxes including, in combination, a magazine adapted to support the face-pieces in a pile, a piece and box assembling press, a box gluer, means adapted to convey boxes one by one into and out of operative relation to said gluer and thereafter convey the previously glued box, and a face-piece therefor from said magazine, into superposed relation to each other in said press, mechanism for actuating said press, and
means adapted to support the face-piece in said press in registry With but spaced from the box therein, said press including a perforated pressing plate adapted t-o contact said vfacepiece and means adapted to heat said plate.
34. A machine for applying facepieces to boxes including, in combination, a magazine adapted to support the face-pieces in a pile, a piece and box assembling press, a box gluer, means adapted to convey boxes one by one into and oui` of operative relation to said gluer and thereafter convey the previously glued box, and a face-piece therefor from said magazine, into superposed relation to each other in said press, mechanism for actuating said press, and means adapted to support the face-piece in said press in registry with but spaced from the box therein, said press including a perforated pressing plate adapted to contact with said face-piece and means adapted to heat said plate, and a reciprocal pressing plunger fitting the interior of said box.
35. A machine for applying face-pieces to boxes including, in combination, a magazine adapted to support the face-pieces in a pile, a piece and box assembling press, a box gluer, means adapted to convey boxes llO one by one into and out of operative relation to said gluer and thereafter convey the previously glued box, and a face-piece therefor from said magazine, into superposed relation to each othei in said press, mechanism for actuating said press, and means adapted frictionally to grip the facepiece by its edges and support the same in said press in registry with but spaced from the box therein, said press including a perforated pressing plate adapted to contact said falce-piece and means adapted to heat said plate.

A machine for applying face-pieces to boxes including, in combination, a magazine adapted to support the face-pieces in a pile, a piece and box assembling press, a box gluer, means adapted to convey boxes one by one into and out of operative relation to said gluer and thereafter convey the previously glued box, and a face-piece therefor from said magazine, into superposed relation to each other in said press, mechanism forV actuating said press, and means adapted frictionally to grip the face-piece by its edges and support the saine in said press in registry With but spaced from the box therein, said press including a perforated pressing plate adapted to contact said face-piece and means adapted to heat said plate, and a reciprocal pressing plunger fitting the intei'ior of said box.

A machine for applying face-pieces to boxes including, in combination, a magazine adapted to support the face-pieces in a pile, a piece and box assembling press, a box gluer, means adapted to convey boxes one by one into and out of operative relation to said gluer and thereafter convey the previously glued box, and a face-piece therefor from said magazine, into superposed relation to each other in said press, and mechanism for actuating said press, said means including devices for guiding the boxes to and arresting them in registry with but spaced fromv the face-pieces in said magazine, and means adapted to support the face-piece in said press in registry with but spaced from the box therein.

A machine for applying face-pieces to boxes including, in combination, a magazine adapted to support the face-pieces in a pile, a piece and box assembling press, a box gluer, means adaptedk to convey boxes one by one into and out of operative relation to said gluer and thereafter convey the previously glued box, and a face-piece therefor from said magazine, into superposed relation to each other in said press, and
mechanism for actuating said press, said means including devices for guiding the boxes to and arresting them in registry with 39. A machine for applying face-pieces to boxes including, in combination, a magazine adapted to support the face-pieces in a pile, a piece and boxk assembling press, a box gluer, means adapted to convey boxes one by one into and out of operative relation to said gluer and thereafter convey the previously glued box, and a face-piece therefor from said magazine, into superposed relation to each other in said'press, mechanism for actuating said press, said means including devices for simultaneously moving a glued box and a face-piece therefor into said press, and means adapted to support the face-piece in said press in registry with but space-d from the box therein.

A machine for applying face-pieces to boxes including, in combination, a magazine adapted to support the. face-pieces in a pile, a piece and box assembling press, a box gluer, means adapted to Convey boxes one by one into and out of operative relation to said gluer and thereafter convey the previously glued box, and a face-piece therefor from said magazine, into superposed relation to each other in said press, and mechanism for actuating said press, said means including devices for simultaneously moving a glued box and a face-piece therefor into said press, and means adapted frict-ionally to grip the face-piece by its edges and support the same in said press in registry with but spaced from the box therein.
