WINDOW-[WASHING ArrARATos.
This invention relates to an apparatus" for scrubbing, washing and cleaning the outsides of vertically sliding window sashes of office and like buildings and has for its object j To provide a simple and eficient structural formation and association of parts and mechanisms -whereby the washing; or cleaning operations are mechanically elfected by the operator from an inside position,an'd not necessitating at any time his presence at the outside of the window with consequent liability to accident, all as will hereinafter more fully appear. v
In the accompanying drawings? Fig. 1, is an outside elevation of a window with the'improved implementin place.
Fig. 2, is a side elevation of the implement detached from the window.
Fig. 3, is a plan view of the same.
Figs. 4 and 5, are detail elevations illustrating diiferent. positions of the guide or track rollers of the'implement.
Fig. 6, is an enlarged detail sectional elevation illustrating the implement inassociated relation with the window. sashes to be washed and cleaned.
Fig. 7, is an enlarged detail section, 1011 gitudinally of the washing roll or drum,
on line 7-4, .Fig. 6, of the detachable -jour-- nal connection between the main standard of the implement and the revoluble washing roll of the same.
Fig. 8, is a detail transverse section of the washing roll.
Fig. 9, is a detail perspective view of the attaching socket member by which the implement is held in place during actual use.
Like reference numerals indicate like parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the window sill of a building, and 2' and 3 the respective upper and lower vertically sliding window sashes of the same.
designates a socket plate adapted for 1923. Serial No. 49,391.
with a horizontal socket or recess 5 in which ahorlzontal foot orpla-te is secured in'place by a clamping =screwf 6'or like-f g... tening' means.
ment, or a v1 platform adapted; for )endwise insertion'from either end into the socket v w I 3,5 7 "r v or r designates thegpivot base of the imple fixed attachment to the $111 1 and j formed or recess of the socket plate 4, and provided with centrally located pivot ears 8 for the standard or post now to be described.
-9 designates the standard orpost of the implement, pivoted at its lower end between the pivotears 8 aforesaid, and carrying'at l its upper enda yoke or frame 10, therespective arms of which. are formed at their upper andouter ends with laterallyextending arms 11,: which'have spaced relation toeach other? corresponding with the window sash. The respective outer ends of th e arm's 11 are formed with-journal-orifices for the journal pins of a pair of washing and cleaning rolls'as follows I 12 designates the washingrolls or' drum, consisting. of a cylindrical ceiitr'al core of 'rigid material around=which are {secured .a series of radiallydisposed strips l3of" I felt or the like, and which are secured in" place by strips of channel-metal 14 as-shown' 'morepart-icularlyin Fig. 8. Said 'COIQ'lS providedat .one end with a fixedly attached journal pin for engagement in a journal Yorifice in an end of a lateral arm 11 aforesald, while the other end of-"sald core. is
provided with afixedlyattached stud 15 upon which the driving-"sheave" 16 of the roll ordrum 12 is 'slidingly mounted by means of akeyway and key as shown in Fig. 7-.
- detachment and subsequent replacementof a washing roll or drum 12 can be effected by a movement by hand of the driving sheave 16 toward said roll-or drum 12 against the stress of the spring 19 so as to remove the journal pin 18 from engagement 1.8 designates a central end stud on the so f in the journal orifice ofa lateralarm 11 aforesaid.
20 designates the cleaning roll or drum .of the improved implement, of substantially similar construction and detachable arrangement as the washing roll or drum 12.
above described, and diliering. therefrom.
in that its series of radially disposed strips are formed of india rubber or like material aforesaidsheaves 16, 2-1 by ,endless belts, one
of which is crossed, and so that both; the washing roll12 and the cleaning. roll; 20. will receive rotation in thesame direction.
25 designates aspringsecured to the wiudow frame and adapted to .yieldingly' draw the upper end of the carrying standard 9, and the mechanisms carried thereby, toward the window. sash during, the, actual use of the implement.
26. designatessupporting rollers or wheels attached to the lateral arms 11 aforesaid, by
pivoted bars 27 and attaching bolts, so as to be capable of movement to a. position in which the washingv and the cleaning rolls 12 and 20 will be held against stops or lugs on the armsll, atapower distancefrom the surface operatedon with, a'view to efficient work onithe part'ofsaid rolls. This provision is of especial value whenthe present implement is used for scrubbing or washingfioors and the like.
28 designates the electric switch by which the operation of the motor 22 is controlled, and said switch is preferably mounted near the lower Jendof the standard 9-for .couvenient access and manipulation.
In the practical operation of the implement in washing and cleaning windows, the implement will be secured in positionby an en agement of anend of its base plate 7 in the socket plate a, with the washing roll or drum 12 in contact with the outer surface ofthe glass of the window sash, and yieldingly held to bearing contact by the spring 25 aforesaid. The felt blades 13 of said roll ordrum 12, having been previously charged with water, the motor 22 is now started, and said blades receives constant revolution, so that as the operator manually lowers'the upper sash 2, for instance,,in a gradual manner, asvery effective washing of the outer surface of the glass will be attained.
l/Vith the. completion of the above described washing operation, the implement is reversed. in its. ositionin thesocket plate 4,. soas to bring the. cleaning roll or drum 20-into operative contact with: the glassof the-window, sash, to effect in a mannersilnilar to that above described, a final cleaning.
or wiping action on the outer surface of, the glass ofsaid window sash.
Having thus finally described my said invention, what-.Lclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A1 window. washing apparatus adapted for use on windows having vertically, moving, sashes, comprisinga fixed base, a main standard secured to the fixed base, a yoke carried y the main standard, a cleaning roll having a cylindrical core, a driving sheave rotatably mounted on said yoke and separably and non-rotatably connected to the core, a motor on the main standard, and means operatively connecting the motor with the driving sheave,
2. The combination of a socket plate formed with a horizontal socket, a platform provided with. pivot-ears. and-adapted for endwise insertion in-thesocket plate, a main standard pivoted. to the pivot-ears, a yoke carriedbythe main standard, a cleaning roll journaled in the yoke, and means for operating the roll.
