GEATL FOR UMBRELLAS Filed Sept. 12 1921 ATTORNEYS Patented May 6, 1924.
UNITED STATES SAMUEL S. FRETZ, $3., 01 PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
GEAT non UMBnnLLAs.
Application file-d September 12, 1921. Serial No. 500,240.
To all whom it may concern. 7
Be it known that I, SAMUELS. Fnn'rz, Sn, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia,'State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and use ful Great for Umbrellas, of which the following is a specification My invention relates to a geat or joint of an umbrella or parasol adapted to pivotally connect a stretcher with the rib thereof, and consists of a plate of metal comparatively U-shape in cross section adapted to be firmly connected with the rib, the inner edges of said U-shaped plate having thereon outturned and inwardly extending cupped-up chambers integraltherewith forming bearings for the pivotal pin of the stretcher, the same being formed without cutting out said edges which cut out edges otherwise would be subjected to the action of rain and rust the same, said cupped up bearings as the metal of the plate is swedged and so compressed to form the same, serving as reinforce, add strength to the bearings and so increase the wearing service thereof and lengthening the life of the geat.
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied within the scope of the claim.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a geat or joint of a stretcher and rib of an umbrella embodying my invention.
Figure 2 represents an elevation thereof taken from the inner side thereof.
Figure 3 represents an elevation of the geat or joint removed from the rib and stretcher on an enlarged scale.
Figure 4 represents an end view thereof.
Figure 5 represents a longitudinal section thereof on line 5-5 Figure 3.
Figure 6 represents a side elevation of a portion of a stretcher having thereon a member embodying a portion of the invention.
Figure 7, longitudinal section of the stretcher on line 77 Figure 6.
Figure 8 represents a transverse section on line 88 of Fig. 2 on an enlarged scale.
Figures 9 and 10 represent views of opposite faces of the plate of which the geat is formed prior to being bent into U-shape.
Figure 11 represents a longitudinal section of said plate on line 1111 Figure 10.
Figure 12 represents a perspective view of the geat shown in Figures 1 and 2.
Figure 13 represents a transverse section on line 13-43 Figure 12.
Figure 14 represents a longitudinal section online 1 -14Figure 13, Figure 5 being a similar section on an enlarged scale.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures. 1
Referring to the drawings.
' 1 designates a portion of 'a channelled rib of an umbrella. 2 designates a portion of a stretcher thereof, and 3' designates the geat or joint which pivotally connects the stretcher and rib, it being clamped on the rib and so retaining its position thereon.
The geat is formed primarily of a plate such as 4;, of light pliable metal bent into comparatively U-shape in cross section. The inner edges of said U-shaped plate, especially at the centers thereof are swedged into cup-ups 5 forming inwardly extending overhanging flanges 6 whose inner faces are hollow or concave and are adapted to receive the axial pin of the stretcher as the bearings thereof. 7
On the reduced end of the stretcher connectible with the rib is the pin 7 having on its opposite terminals enlarged heads 8 which are on the exterior of said reduced end and retain the sides of said reduced end firmly together, through the recesses and entering the channel of the rib. The heads-8 also enter the channel of the rib and are engaged by the inner sides of the flanges 6 which latter when the geat is compressed on the rib are closed against the reduced end of the stretcher thus retaining said heads within the geat whil the flanges provide the bearings for the stretcher in its opening and closing motions in the geat, forming the pivotal connection of the stretcher with the rib and vice versa, while also adding strength and wearing service to the joint of the stretcher and rib.
Attention is directed to the fact that the cup-ups 5 are formed on the inner edges of the plate i by swedging and so compresssaid end passing ing th proper portions of said inner edges,
thus throwing up said metal into somewhat partial rounded or hemispherical shape leaving the inner faces of the thrown up portion hollow or chambered into which are received the heads 8 of the axial pin -7 which connect the stretcher with and rib and vice versa, said cup-ups thus forming the bearings of said heads, the curved Wall retaining the heads of the axial pin therein, it being noticed that said bearings are in no wise cut out of the metal of the plate and converted into bent down tongues as heretofore practiced, hence there are no raw edges on the sides of the cup-ups between the latter and the adjacent portions of the plate, such raw edges otherwise existing being subjected to the action of rain which would rust them and consequently any existing tongues and shorten the life of the geat. This is avoided by converting the proper portion of the edges of the plate into the cup-ups which are chambered on their inner sides to receive and form the bearings for the axial pin, said cup-ups being in tegral throughout with the plate and being in a measure arch shape which reinforces and strengthens them and increases the life of the geat.
In order to render the geat 3, the pin 7 and the heads 8 rustproof 1 form the same of rustproof material and so provide rustproof bearings for the axis of the stretcher on the geat especialy on the cupped up flanges of the latter.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
A geat for a rib and stretcher joint comprising a U-shaped plate, an inwardly extending flange on each leg of the U, the contiguous edges of the flanges having outwardly extending cup-ups to receive the joint pin on the stretcher, form bearings therefor and retain said pin in the geat.
