'Appliauon vfiled' August 14,L 192s,A
and useful Improvements in* Stove-Lid' Lifters, of which the followingis'a specifica-v tion.l `j-' i Thisinvention relates to), new and useful im rovements in stovelidlifters.`
important object of the invention is to i provide a" lid lifter y"of a construction that will insure obtaining a rigid grip upon a stove lid for preventing relative movement therebetween after the lid has been removed from the stove.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned type which is of simple construction, strong, durable, and one that may be manufactured at a very nominal cost.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the followingv description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed' to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the stove lid lifter embodying this invention and shown in position for lifting the stove lid illustrated in section, and
Figure 2 is a top plan view of Fig. 1.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodi* ment of this invention, the numeral 5 designates a fragmentary portion of a stove top which is provided with an opening 6 adapted to be closed by the lid 7 having a depression formed therein that consists of the arcuate bottom wall 8 and having a transversely extending pin 9.
The lifter consists of the crossed members A and B which are provided with handle portions 10 and 11 respectively. The member A is provided with a downwardly curved forward end 12 having a bifurcated* 16 which is positioned between the inner ends of the spaced parallel 'side arms 13 and v, serial. No. 657,346. g f v 111 andy *is pivotally .connected thereto by .the pin or rivet 17. The straightclamping jaw 18l is formed integrally :withythi's reversely curved portion 16. and is-providedV at its outer end with anintegrally formeddepend-Ql ing lug19 that is' spaced outwardly of the' lugs'l-carriedby thesside arms 13 and I14. -4
The Y:handle portions 10 and 11-farev provided with-a coil vsp'ring20 whichfis seatedvat its opposite f ends in-recesses 22formed inthe inner facesof the same andyis adapted for normally retaining the"y clamping jaws iinthe positions shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
By inspecting Fig. 1, it will be seen that when the handle portions 10 and 11 kare forced together against the tension of the spring 20, the clamping jaws will be sepa..- rated for allowing the spaced parallel side arms of the arcuatelyshaped lowerjaw to be positioned within the depression formed in the stove lid 6 with the said arcuate j aw engaging the curved surface 8. The transversely extending pin 9 will engage the upl standing-spaced lugs 15 and will be held thereagainst when the handle portions 10 and 11 are released for allowing the spring 2O to move the upper jaw 18 toward the lower arcuate bifurcated jaw and for posi tioning the depending lug 19 on the opposite side of the pin 18 to the upstanding lugs 15. It will bey seen that this construction will prevent tilting of the lid 7 in any direction in respect to the said lifter.
It is to be understood that the form ofv this invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of'parts be resorted to without departing from the spirit' of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims. 1
Having thus described the invention, I claim 1. In a lifter, a pair of crossed members pivotally connected, a handle portion formed on each member, a bifurcated clamping jaw carried by one member, a clamping jawvcarried by the second member extending through said bifurcated jaw, spaced lugs carried by said bifurcated aw,` a single lug carried by the second clamping jaw, and means carried by said handle portions for causing said clamping jaws to move toward each other.
2. In a lifter, a pair of crossed members pivotally connected, a handle portion formedV on each member, a clamping jawE l 4. The combination with a stove lid havconsisting of spaced parallel side arms havmg a recess provided with a curved bottom ing lugs spaced inwardly from their outer wall and a transversely extending pin posiends carried by one member, a straight jaw#Y tionedwithin said recess, o'a lifter consist.- having a'depending lugpositioned outwardly ing of a pairfof crossed members pivotally from the first mentioned lugs carried by the connected, a handle portion formed on each second member, and means associated with member, an arcuate bifurcated jawihaving said handle portions for moving said clampupstanding lugs carried by'V one member ing jaws toward each other. V adapted for engaging the curved bottom 3. In a lifter, a air of crossed members wall of the recess with the lugs engaging pivotally connectedlahandle portion formed one side of tliegtransversely extending. pin, on each member, an arcuateY bifurcated and a straight jaw having a depending lug clamping :j aw carried Aby one member, a positioned outwardly of said first mentioned straight clamping jaw extending outwardly lugs carriedv by the second member. adapted of the bifurcated jaw carried bythe second for engaging the opposite side of said transmember, anda coil spring positioned be- Vrsely extending pin. tween saidhandle portions for VVnormally retaining said olamping'jaws. in operative relation in respect tofeach other.
In testimony whereof I aiiX my signature.
