ofvPennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Barrel-Cleaning Machine, of which the following is a specification. l
My present invention comprehends a A novel construction and arrangement of a barrel cleaning machine wherein novel means are employed for clampingthe barrel in position, novel means for effecting the rotation of a barreland novel means for adjusting the position of the support by which the barrel is carried, and llocking the parts in their adjusted position.
It further comprehends a novell construction of'a cleaning device which preferably comprises a chain' or cable in swivelled connectlon with respect to a plug adapted to be substituted for the bung of the barrel, said chain or cable having connected to it a desired number of other Vchains or cables sorthat all parts of the barrel interior will be properly acted upon.
The cleansing of steel barrels which serve as containers'for lubricants and sticky materials has always been a diiicult proposition and my present invention is designed to overcome the diliiculties which have here- `uo'ore arisen in the electual cleaning of barrels of this character. i
Other novel features of construction and advantage will hereinafter more .'full'y appear in the detailed description and the appended claims. l l For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown in the accompanying drawings a typical embodimentthereof which is at present preferred by me, since this embodiment will be found in practicey ve satisfactory and reliable results It t0 is, owever, to, be understood that the-various instrumentalities of which my inventionA shown and described.

1 designates the baseor foundation which 1n practice is preferably constructed of -structural metal beams ,secured together in any desired manner, 2 designates a standard in -which is journalled the main drivlng shaft 3 which is provided with a tight and a 'loose' pulley 4 and 5, respectively, in order 'to adapt it to receive a driving belt, (not shown). Rotatably mounted on the driving shaft 3 is a bracket 6 which is connected to the support 7 which is in the form of a skeleton framework havingthe end heads 8 and 9, respectively, which are spaced bv means of channel irons 10 and connected together by means of a rod 11 and the nuts 12, so that a rigid construction is provided. These longitudinal 'channel ironsl 10 are connected bythe cross bars 13 to which at one side is connected the bearing bracket 6 and at the opposite side a bearingl bracket 14 which is rotatably mounted on a vbearing 15 journalled in the standards 16 which rises'rom the supporting base 1.
-The main driving shaft 3 is provided with a gear 17 which meshes with a gear v18 carried by'a shaft 19 suitably journalled in the. support "I,"v being journalled in the f' bearing 20 and the head 9.'
The shaft 19 carries the gear 21 which meshes with a gearv 22 journalled in the head 9 and said gear 22 meshes with a gear 23 also journalled in the head 9. The gear 23 meshes with a pinion 24 fixed to the hub of a clamping head- 25 to which latter is connected a spindle 26 fixed thereto as,
for example, by means of a key 27. Thespindle 26 is journalled in a bushing carried by the head 9 and is maintained in position by means of a nut 28 in'threaded engagement with the spindle and bearing against the washer 29, inte between it and the head 9. In case a small barrel is employed a cap-shaped {iller member 33 is used which is secured in place by'means of the angle 34 and the fastening device 35. 36 designates an adjustable barrel clamping head which may have any'desired number of annular grooves and which is rotatably mounted at the inner, end of a lon itudinally adjustable spindle 37 which is eyed in a bushing 38 carried by the head 8. The spindle 37 is provided with a shoulder 38 against which the clamping head 36 abuts, and the free end of the spin-` dle 37 terminates in a head 39 of greater diameter than the bearing portion of the spindle and a groove 40 is provided into which isreceived a split washer 41 which is secured` in osition by means of fastening devices 42.

The plug 58 is previded'with an maarre The o eration of my novel barrel cleansing mac ine willnow be readily apparent to those skilled in this art and is as follows The bung of the barrel is removed and the plug 58 secured in position so thatthe chains 70 64 and 65 are within the barrel, as will be understood by reference toFigure 4, it of course being understood that prior to the placement of the plug' any desired type of cleansing solution is placed in the barrel to be cleaned. The barrel is then placed on the clamping head 25 and I have provided three grooves of different diameters to position the barrel although any desired number may be employed and since in the drawings I have' shown a smaller sized barrel, a filler member 32 is employed on which the barrel 31 rests. The hand wheel 43 is then tightened as well as the lock nut 50so that the barrel is in clamped position in its support 7.
Assuming now that the driving shaft 3 is revolving, the shaft 19 will be driven, and as this shaft is --intergeared WithY the barrel clamping head 25, the barrel/Will be continuousl revolved within the support 7. The cleaning means in the form of chains 64 and .65 are thrown `during their revolution into 'in other words, disengaged from the teeth of disc 54, shown` in Fig. 3. On lthe other hand, if it is desired to revolve the barrel at intervals the hand operating mechanism, shown at the right hand side of 54,'is employed. In this case lever 57 is caused to engage with the teeth of disc `54 and the hand wheel 53 actuated to rotate support 7 105 in a desired direction.
-In this manner the support can be intermittently adjusted in position so that the chains will operate on all portions of the linterior wall of the barrel.
My machine has beenk found in practice to. give very advantageous yresults and to thorou hly clean metal barrels in a manner which as not heretofore been deemed possible o'r practical.
It will now be apparent that I have devised a new and'useful `barrel cleaning machine which embodies the features of advantageenumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above descripm0 tion, and while 'I have, in thepresent instance, shown and described a preferred embodiment thereof which will glve in practice satisfactory and reliable results, it isl to be understood that this embodiment-is suscepl. tible o f'modifcation in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the. invention or' sacrificing any of' its ad-' vantages.
Having thus described my invention, .what w@ I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a barrel cleaning machine, a barrel support, means to clamp the barrel therein,

In a barrel cleaning machine, a barrel support rotatably mounted, and having spaced heads, a barrel clamping member rotatably mounted on one head, means to effect rotation of said clamping head, a spindle adjustably carried by said other head, a barrel clamping member freely rotatable on said spindle, means to lock said spindle in its adjusted position, a locking member'carried by said support vand a stationary locking member with whichthe first locking member co-op'erates to fix said support in the position to which it has been rotatably adjusted. 4. In a barrel cleanin machine, spaced clamping heads, connectlons between said heads, a barrel clamping member rotatably mounted in one of said heads, means to rotate 4said barrel clamping member, a spindle longitudinally adjustable in the 'other clamping head, a barrel clamping member freely rotatable on said spindle, a
bar carried by and spaced from said spindle carrying head,A a collar engaging said bar, an adjusting nu't between said collar and said head and in threaded engagementwith said spindle, a lock nut on said spindle, and means to rotatably adjust the clamping heads and thereby the barrelclamped therebetween.
