Be it known that I7 IVILLiaM L. DnMrNex a citizen ot the United States ot America, residing at Salem, in the county of Columbiana and State of @him-have invented a certain new and useiul Improvement .in Nozzles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to `spraying apparatus and is primarily concerned with 'the provision of a nozzle which is adapted for use in any apparatus wherein it is desirable to effect a closure at the fluid discharge point.
One of the objects of my invention is the provision of a simple and cheap nozzle which may be readily installed in existing bathing apparatus, and be utilized therein for controlling the volume of fluid passing therethrough, without changing the mixture at the faucet. Another object is the provi-- sion ot a nozzlefwhereinl the fluid is discharged tlirough tangential orifices whereby a whirling spray is effected at the point of fluid discharge.
The means for accomplishing` the above objects will be fully set forth in the tol lowing description` which relates to the drawings. and the essential characteristics ot my invention are set forth in the claims.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is an elevation of a bathing apparatus embodying features of my invention, Fig. 9, is an enlarged sectional view taken through the nozzle and showing` the relation of the various members when the nozzle is in closed7 position. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the relation ot the parts when the nozzle is in open position; Fig. 4 is a horizontal section showing the tangential discharge orifices in .the spray head. y
My invention is illustrated in the drawings as embodied in connection with a bathing apparatus wherein 10 indicates a control valve. or faucet? 11 a flexible conduit, 12 a nozzle supportand 18 a discharge conduit. The nozzle is shown as suspended from an inclined bracket 14 which is attached to a wall 15, and the support itself is shown as a swivelled member for enabling the operator to swing the nozzle, for deflecting the water to any part of` the body. the claims covering the subject matter. This application is a division of the above copending application and is concerned with the nozzle attached to ,thedischarge conduit 13.
In Figs. 2 and 3, I have shown the conduit 13 as having a chambered head 2O rigidly secured to the lowermost endy thereof, and I have shown such head as having inclined tangential orifices 2l, which serve as discharge passageways for all of the water flowing through the conduit. The outer surface of this head is threaded, as at 22` andis arranged to be engaged by the internally threaded casing 23.
The casing is shown as a bell-'shaped member having a neck 24 which closely embraces the discharge conduit and which is provided with a stllffing-box25. The stuffing` box 25, comprising a packing ring 26 and a `gland follower Q7, forms a barrier,
against the passage of fluid between the casme` and conduit, and at the same time provides effective contact surface against the conduit for preventing the casing from ro` tating about the head 20. The lower p0rtion of the casing is recessed, as at 28, to provide a shoulder 29 andan internally threaded portion. which portion is larger in` diameter than the recess occupied by the head '20. The lowermost portion of the outer surface, as at 30,`is preferably knurled to provide a convenient grip` for turning the casing relatively to the head 20.
Extending across the recessed portion 28 I provide a cap 31 which is threaded eX- ternally to engage the lower threads in the casing, and which is preterably equipped with a single central'discharge aperture 32. Intermediate the cap and shoulder 29 I provide a gasket 33 which is arranged to be held in close fitting engagement between the cap and casing. The innerL edge of the gasket is beveled as at 34 and is so positioned that the tangential discharge orifices 21 wlll be closed when the gasket is brought into Contact with the head. In positioning the gasket`r the cap is drawn tightly into envses ever the casing is rotated about the head, the gasket is caused to move either into or out ot engagement therewith.
ln 2 l have shown the gasket in engagement with the head 2O and consequently as effectinga closure for the orifices 21. When the parts are in this position the water will be prevented from discharging through the vent 32. Should any fluid be forced upwardly between the casing and head, then the stuffingbofx 25 would prevent the passage of fluid between Jthe conduit and the casing. further use 'for the stuffing box is that the casing, when once turned, ismaintained in such posi-tion by reason of the pressure exerted by the packing ring 26 against the wall of the discharge conduit.
In Figure 3 l have shown a gasket 33 as out of engagement-with the chambered head, and consequently as removed from the orifices 2l. In this position, the fluid is free to pass into the bowl of the cap and thence out of the discharge passage 32. The arrangement of the orijlices 2l causes a whirling discharge which throws the water in a conical Vspray through Lthe port 32 and thereby provides an effective cleansing action.
The operation of my device is as follows: Assuming that the nozzle is employed .in a bathing apparatus and that the temperature of the fluid is regulated by the faucet .10, then the volume of fluid may be controlled by manually turning the nozzle casing 23 on the threaded head 20 whereby the distance `between the gasket 33 and the discharge oriices 2l may be cont-rolled at will. In regulating the volume of fluid passing tl'irough the nozzle it is obvious that such regulation may be attained without disturbing the temperature control as determined by the faucet 10.
lfroni the foregoing description it will be seen that lf have provided a nozzle which may be emjjiloyed in connection with a bathing apparatus or with any form of spraying device 'for controlling the volume of fluid to be (lis:har ed 'without in any way affecting the temperature as regulated at another point in the line. .Furthermora it will be seen that l have provided a nozzle which is quite simple in construction and which may be readily attached to existing shower apparatus.
ifieaieo Having thus described my invention, I claim:
l. The combination witha discharge conduit having an enlarged head at one end thereof, the end of said head being domeshaped and having tangential passageways through the dome-shaped portion, of a casing haring two recessed portions, one of said recesses surrounding the head, a cap fitting into the other of said recesses and having a central discharge passageway, a gasket spaced from the head and positioned between the cap and casing and having an annular exposed face disposed within the path of said passageways, said face being complementary to the dome-shaped portion of the head whereby movement of the casing relatively to the head effects a gradual closing of the passageways by the gasket.
2. In a device of the charac-ter described, the combination with a conduit having the end thereof terminating in a dome shaped chamber, tangential passageways leading outwardly from said chamber through the dome-shaped portion thereof, a casing surrounding the chamber and out of contact with the passageway/s and a beveled closure member rigidly secured to the casing and adapted to be brought into engagement with the chamber for closing said passageways, said beveled member being substantially complementary to the dome shaped portion of the chamber.,
ln a device of the character described, the combination with a Huid conduit, of a chambered dome-shaped head secured to the end thereof, tangential inclined passageways extending from the interior to the exterior and adjacent the base of the dome, the exterior portion of the head being threaded, a casing having two concentric internally threaded recesses therein, the inner recess being iu engagement with the threaded por? tion of the head, a cap threaded to the outer recess, said cap having a central discharge passageway therein, a gasket intermediate the cap and. casing, said gasket having a portion thereof complementary tothe domeshaped head and comprising a closure for said passageways when brought into engagement with the head. l
