To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS E. CARRI- GAN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of .6 Milwaukee and State of Wisconsimhave invented new and usefulImprovements in Knockdown Bed Frames for Automobiles, of which the following is a description, reference bein had to the accom anying drawings, w ich are a part, of'thl's'specification.
i This invention relates to knock-downbed,
frames, and more articularly to a device of this character w ich ifsa'dapted for use 1 in automobiles, and has for its object to provide an apparatus of this character which will be s1mple in construction, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and
w more eflicient in use than "those which have been heretofore proposed.

With these and other objects in 'view which appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel details of construction and combinations of vparts more fully hereinafter disclosed, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

The various members may be made of tubular-or angle iron construction, in order to provide combined strength and lightness.

A second collar 31, is slidably mounted upon the member 28, and is adapted to fit upon the end of themember 26 and to frictionally engage the same, whereby ,the two members 26 and 28 may be rigidly secured together in any desired positlons- In like manner the member 17 has pivotly secured to it, as at 32, a member 33, which is ada ted to slidably engage a collar 34, which is plvotly connected as by the hinge 35, to a member 36, pivotly secured to the side member 19. A suitable collar 37, corresponding to the collar 31, is slidably mounted upon the end member 36, and is adapted to frictionallyengage the end of the member 33 in order to lock these two members together.
The parts so far described constitute a horizontal frame which is adapted to receive the supporting canvas, as will presently appear, and in order to support. the said frame within the motor vehicle body, there is provided the substantially vertical angle iron supporting legs 40, 41, 42, and 43. The leg 40 is pivotly secured to the horizontal side member 16 by means of a collar 44 slidably secured to the said side member, while the leg 41 is secured to the member 17 by a collar 45, the leg 42 is secured to the member 18 by a collar 46, and the leg 43 is secured to the member 19 by means of a collar 47. The said legs are pivoted to the respective collars transversely of the frame so that when the frame is not in use they may be swung upwardly about their pivots to occupy positions in close proximity to the slide members 16, 17 18 and 19, respectively,- and thus occupy very little space.
In order to brace the said legs transversely there is provided the horizontal bracing members 48 and 49, which members are composed of the pairs of adjustable angle members 50 and 51, 52 and 53 respectively. The said members 50 and 51 are adjustably connected together by means of the collars 54 and 55, while the members 52 and 53 are connected together in like manner by the collars 56 and 57.
The said bracing members 48 and 49 are adapted to be removably received in the enlarged sockets 60, provided within the colname the legs 40, 41, 42, and 43 are each .provided' with slidablc extension members65, having the holes or recesses 66 which are adapted to be engaged by the pins 67 carried b the collar members 68 with which the sai 1e 40, 41, 42 and 43 are provided,'as will clear from Figs. 2 and 4 of the drawin s.
After the frame has'been set up within the machine a canvas supporting member 76 maybe stretched thereon, in order to su port the mattress, cushions, or other be ding which is to be used. The ends of this said canvas member 70 are provided with suitable reinforced chain-like members 71 having books or other suitable securing members 72, which are adapted to engage the edges of the end angle iron members 26, 28, 33, and 36, as-shown in Fig. 8. In order to stretch the said canvas taut, the end members 33 and 3.6 may be revolubly mounted upon trunnions 74 and 75 and provided with a pivoted handle 76 whereby the said members 33 and 36 may be rotated in order to stretch the canvas. Suitable ratchet wheels 77, having associated with them the dogs or pawls 78, may be provided in order to hold the parts with the canvas in its stretched position.
When it is desired to employ the present invention, it is only necessary to set up the frame with the parts in the positions illustrated in the drawings and place the same within the body of the machine, with the legs 42 and 43 occupying the space in front of the front seat and the legs 40 and 41 occupying the space in front of the rear seat. The canvas cover 70 may then be secured to the end members 26, 28, 33, and 36 by means of the hooks 72 and it ma ,be stretched taut by operating the handle 6 in the manner above disclosed.
When it is desired to fold up the bed in the morning, the canvas may be loosened and removed and the horizontal bracing members 48 and 49 moved out of the receiving sockets 60 and folded with the legs. The legs 40, 41, 42, and 43 will then be swung upwardly into close proximity with the side members 16, 17, 18 and 19, and the hinges 29 and 35 broken, thereby permitting the end members 26, 28, 33, and 36 to swing inwardly, to occupy oflset positions adjacent the said side members 10, 17, 18, and 19.
During this operation the members 26 and 33 will slide within the collars 30 and 34 as will be readily apparent. The parts may be furthermore contracted by disengaging the pivot catches 22 from the holes 24 and collapsing the side members longitudinally as will be likewise readily a parent.
It will thus be seen t at this invention provides a bed frame which is especially adapted for use in connection with motor vehicles, which is relatively small and light in construction and which may be readily folded up to occupy comparatively little space when not in use. It furthermore provides a frame which may be rapidly set up, and which is strong enough to support any weight which it may be called upon to carry.
It is obvious that those skilled in the art may vary the details of construction, as Well as the arrangement of parts, without departing from the spirit of the invention, and therefore, it is not wished to be limited to the above disclosure except as may be required by the claims.
What is claimed is:
1. In a device of the class described, a horizontal frame comprising side members and end members pivotally secured thereto, said members being adjustable longitudinally and transversely respectively to fit within vehicle bodies of different sizes; and vertically adjustable supporting members pivotally secured to said frame in spaced reation, adapted to straddle a seat of said vehicle.
2. A device of the class described comprising a horizontal frame consisting of longitudinally adjustable side members, and transversely adjustable end members, said end members comprising readily engageable and disengageable pairs of sections pivotally secured to said side members; means for holding said pairs of sections in their engaged positions; and vertically adjustable supporting members pivotally secured to said side members.

4. A device of the class described comprising a horizontal frame having longitudinally adjustable side members and transverselfy adjustable foldable end members pivotally secured to said side members; vertically adjustable supporting members pivotally secured to said side members; and detachable bracing members secured to said supporting members.
5. A device of the class described comprising a horizontal frame having longitudinally adjustable side members and transversely adjustable foldable end members pivotally secured to said side members; vertically adjustable sup orting members pivotally secured to said side members; and readily foldable transverse bracin members secured to said supporting mem ers.
6. A device of the class described comprising a horizontal frame having longitudinally adjustable side members and transversely adjustable foldable end members; means of locking said side and end members in their adjusted positions; means associated with one of said end members for tensionin a yieldable supporting sheet upon said ame; vertical sup orting members ivotally secured to said s1de members; ad-
