T 0 all to ham it may concern Be it known that 1, Joint Dunoznwsnr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Amsterdam, in the county of Montgomery and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Square Attachments for Handsaws, of which the following is a specification.
Reference may be had to the accompanying drawings, and the reference characters marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. Similar characters refer to similar parts'in the several figures therein.
The; principal object of the invention is to ,provide an adjustable square attachment for handsaws which can be readily adjusted to indicatedifi'erent angles, and which can be readily withdrawn to a position such as not to interfere with the operation of the saw.
Other objects will appear in connection with the following description.
Fig. 1 of the drawings is a view in side elevation of a boken-away handle-end-portion of an ordinary handsaw, showing my attachment mounted thereupon;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a view in side elevation of the broken-away handle-end-portion of the saw with the attachment mounted thereon, as
seen from the side opposite that shown in Fig. 1, and in use as a square;
Fig. 1 is a view in side elevation of the saw and attachment employed as a level;
Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the saw and attachment as shown in Fig. 3; and
Fig. 6 is a cross-section of the saw and attachment taken on the broken line 6-6 in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings wherein the invention is shown in preferred form, 1 is the blade, and 2 the handle of an ordinary handsaw.
Detachably mounted upon the handle of the saw by means of winged bolts?) and 4,
is a frame 5. preferably formed of heavy sheet metal withwings 5 and 5 adapted to receive between them the handle 2 of the saw.
Upon the frame 5 are mounted two stright- edges 6 and 7. The straight-edge 6 is mounted upon the convergent portion 5 Serial No. 559,937.
of the wing 5 of the frame, as shown in Fig. 2, by means of a pivotal connection 8 which permits the straight-edge 6 to be folded back along the handle portion 2 of the saw, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, when said straight-edge is not in use.
This straight-edge 6, may be constructed substantially like an ordinary folding carpenters rule, and it is so mounted that while it can be folded upon the pivot 8, or other pivots with which it may be provided, it is not capable of angular adjustment in a plane parallel with the saw blade.
The straight-edge 7 is pivotally mounted at 9 upon a plate 10 forming a continuation of the convergent member 5 of the wing 5 of the frame, which pivotal connection permits the straight-edge 7 to be rotatably moved in a plane parallel with'and in close proximity to the blade 1 of the saw.
In fixed relation to the straight-edgafi, is a segment, 11, the periphery of which is provided with any desired number of notches, 12, each adapted to receive the offset end of a dog, 13, to hold the straight-edge, 7, in a selected rotative position, said dog being pivotally mounted at 14:, and being yieldingly held in engagement with the periphery of the segment, 11, by means of a sprin 15.
The dog is adapted to be withdrawn from engagement with the notches, 12, by means of a hand-actuated link, 16, pivotally connected with the head of the dog at 17, and guided by means of a pin, 18. fixed upon the plate. 10. projecting through a slot, 19, in the hand-actuated link, 16, as shown in Fig. 1.
The straight-edge and segment, 11, when released from engagement by the dog. 13. are adapted to be rotatively moved about the pivotal connection, 9, in the direction of the arrow, 20, by means of a hand-actuated link, 21, connected by a link, 22. with the straightedge, 7. said connections being pivotal.
Thelink. 21. is guided in its movements by pins, 23 and 24, fixed upon the plate, 10,
and projecting through the respective-slots,
removing the winged bolts, 8 and 4, the attachment comprising; the frame, 5, and the various mechanisms mounted thereupon can be removed from the saw.
The operation of the device is as follows:
The straight-edge, 6, is normally folded back along the handle, 2, of the saw as indi cated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, and the straight-edge, '7, is normally withdrawn into close proximity to the handle, 2, as shown in Fig. a, so as not to interfere with the ordinary functions oi? the saw.
lVhen it is desired to use the device as a square or the like, the user with one finger of the hand grasping the handle of the saw withdraws the link, 16, until the head of the dog, 13, is withdrawn from the notch, 12, whereby the straight edge, 7, is held in the normal position shown in Fig. 4:. At the same time the operator with a second finger of the same hand by pullin upon the link, 21, rotatively moves the straightedge, 7, against the force of the spring, 27, until said straight-edge is at the desired angle to the straight-edge, 6, at which point the head of the dog, 13, will engage another of the notches, 12, to hold the straight edge in said angular position.
'The device thus presents two angularly disposed straight-edges on the respective opposite sides of the saw blade, and can be used as a square or the like, as shown in Fig. 3, with respect to a board, 29, or the like.
After the device has been thus used as a square, the user by merely pulling upon the dog-link, 16, releases the straight-edge, 7, to the action of the spring, 27, which immediately restores said straight-edge to the normal position shown in Fig. 4.
By providing notches 12 at proper intervals in the periphery of the segment 11, the straightedge 7 can thus be adjusted at any desired angle with respect to the straightedge 6.
For use as a level the saw is inverted and the straight-edge 6 is permitted to rest upon the surface of a board 29 or the like as shown in Fig. 4. 7
hen the invention is applied to a saw having a straight back-edge 80. the straightedge 6 may be omitted from the attachment if desired, as the straight-edge 7 will form an accurate square or other angle with said straight back-edge 30 of the saw itself.
The device including the straight-edge 6 may be used free from the saw if desired.
VVha-t I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the class described and in combination, a frame, a straightedge pivotally mounted uponsaid frame. a segment in fixed relation to said straight-edge and provided with a peripheral notch. a
dog automatically engageable with said notch, a hand-actuated dog-releasing mem ber, hand-actuated means for moving said straight-edge in one direction, and automatic means for moving the straigl'it-edge in the opposite direction when said dog is released.
2. In a device of ti c class described and in combination, a frame, means for detachablymounting said frame upon the handle portion of a handsaw, a straight-edge pivotally mountedupon said frame, a segment in fixed relation to said straight-edge and provided with notches in its periphery, a dog automatically engageable with said notches in the segment, a hand-actuated dog-releasing member, a hand-actuated member for moving said straight-edge in one direction, said hand-actuated members being accessible to fingers of a hand grasping the handle of the saw, and a spring for automatically accomplishing a return movement of the straight-edge.
8. In a device of the class described and in combination, a frame; two straight-edges mounted upon the frame, one being pivotally mounted; a segment in fixed relation to the pivotally mounted straight-edee, and provided with peripheral notches; a dog automatically engageable with the notches in the periphery of said segment; a handactuated dog-releasing member; hand actuated means for moving said pivotally mounted straight-edge in one direction; and means for automatically moving said pivotally mounted straigl'it-edge in the opposite direction when said dog is released.
4. In a device of the class described and in combination, a frame; means for detachably mounting said frame upon the handle portion of a handsaw, said frame having wings adapted to embrace between them the handle portion and a neighboring blade portion of the saw; straight-edge mounted upon one of the wings of the frame in position to extend along the back edge of the saw; a second straight edge pivotally mounted upon the other wing of said frame; means including a hand-actuated member for moving the pivotally mounted second straightedge to and from selected angular positions with respect to said first mentioned straight-edge; and means including a hand-released automatically engaging dog for holding said pivotally mounted straightedge in selected angular positionwith respect to said first-mentioned straighteds 'e.
5. In a device of the class described and in combination, a frame; means for detachably mounting said frame upon the handle portion of a handsaw, said frame having wings adapted to embrace between them the handle portion and a neighboring blade portion of the saw: a foldablc straightedge mounted upon one of the wings of the frame in position to be extended along the backedge of the saw, and to be folded back along ill the handle portion of the saw; a second straight-edge pivotally mounted upon the other wing of said frame; means including a hand-actuated member for moving the pivotally mounted straight-edge to and from selected angular positions with respect to said first-mentioned straight-edge; and means including a hand-released automatieerily-engaging dog for holding said pivotally mounted straight-edge in selected angular position with respect to said first-mentioned straight-edge.
