M. E. B AILEY TOOL FOR REPLACING TRANSMISSION COVERS ON FORD CARS Filed March 16. 1922 INVENTOR Patented ey 6, 1924.
STATES MERITT E. BAILEY, OF BURBANK, CALIFORNIA.
TOOL FOR REPLACING TRANSMISSION COVERS ON FOB-D CARS.
Application fil'ed March 16, 1922.- Serial No. 544,092.
To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, MnRrrr E. BAILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burbank, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Tool for Replacing Transmission Covers on Ford Cars, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to tools especially adapted for use when replacing the transmission cover of a Ford transmission.
An important object is to provide a tool having novel means to hold the transmission bands, springs and associated elements in position while the cover isbeing replaced.
A further object is to provide a tool of the class described which may be readily and conveniently applied and disconnected and, which when in position, will efi'ectively hold the several parts in position so that the time required to replace the transmission cover will be reduced to a minimum.
A further object is to provide a tool of the class described which is of highly simplified construction, simple to operate and cheap to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a perspective of the improved tool applied.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view through the tool applied.
Figure 3 is a perspective of the tool.
In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a transmission cover within which the usual drums 6 are arranged. The bands 7 are arranged about the drums and are provided with upwardly directed ears 8 having slots 9 through which the operating shafts 10 are extended, the said shafts having their terminal portions threaded for engagement with nuts 11 which form a means whereby the bands may be adjusted as the occasion requires. Washers 12 are arranged between the nuts 11 and the ears 8 and are provided with notches which engage the nuts 11 so that the nuts are securely held in position.
The invention forming the subject matter of this application is in the nature of a tool formed from a single piece of flat metal 14 having a plurality of downwardly directed lugs 16 which engage the inner sides of the ears 8 at opposite sides of the shafts 10 whereby to hold the bands in position about the. drums during the replacement of the cover 5. The improved tool is also provided along its longitudinal edges with laterally projecting gradually tapered arms 18 which are received within the slots 9 in the ears 8 whereby to hold the bands in properly spaced relation with relation to each other. The arms 18 at the right of the tool also engage the washers 12 so as to hold the same in position and the arms 18 at the right are somewhat shorter than those at the left of the tool for convenience in applying the tool.
In order that the tool might be securely held in position, I have provided the same with longitudinal and transverse incisions 19 and 20 respectivel which provide a pair of arms 21 extended ownwardly and curved longitudinally for engagement with the intermediate spring of the series of three springs between the bands. The downwardly extending attaching arms 21 have their terminal portions curved outwardly so as to permit the arms to be slipped over the intermediate spring 23 with convenience.
In operation, the tool is applied to the intermediate spring'and the laterally projecting arms 18 are engaged with the ends of bands and with the washers so as to hold the bands and other parts in position. Of course the downwardly extending lugs 16 formed along the longitudinal edges of the sheet metal plate engage the ends of the springs and thereby hold the same in position so that the cover may be applied.
It will be seen that by the use of the improved tool the time required to replace the transmission cover is reduced to a. minimum.
I claim:-
1. A transmission tool consisting of an transmission whereby to hold the springs is position, said elongated piece of metal being provided-hetwee11:;said :spaced lugs with laterally: projecting arms adapted for engaging the ears of the transmission bands.
2. A transmissionwtool consisting of a-n elongated piece of metal having its longitudinal edges formedtwith downwardly-ex- 1 tending spaced lugs adapted for engaging the springs of the bandsvof ar iplanetary transmission whereby to hold the springs in position; said elongated piece of metal being provided between "said spaced -lugs with laterally projecting arms adapted for engaging the ears of the transmission bands, said piece of: metal being :provided between its longitudinal edges- With downwardly extending spring arms adapted for engaging one of .the splzingss of the transmission bands.
' In testimony whereof, I have aifixed my 20 signature-in, thewpresence ';0f"-.--t-wo witnesses.
.I-MERITT E. BAILEY. WVitnesses W. N. BENDER, 'WALTER 'BRANT.
