CUTTING TOOL.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, MARCUS B. BEHRMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York,have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Cutting Tools, of which the ollowing is a specification.
The. invention relates to improvements in cutting-tools adapted for various uses an involvmg the employment of safety razor blades. It is well known that safety razor blades when too dull for use in shaving are still ve sharp, and my inventioncontemw plates t e employment of these discarded safety razor blades for use in ripping seams and cutting paper and for other purposes. In carrying out my invention l provide a holder, in one piece of sheet metal, for a w safety razor blade and connect the same with a folded bar handle, also in one piece, equipped at its forward end with trunnions or pintles adapted to apertures formed in lips on the holder, the upper and lower members of the handle, at their forward ends, being capable of being pressed toward each other and when released, springing outwardly, whereby the trunnions may be introduced into the said apertures therefor on the holder without the use of special tools. The tool of my invention is composed of two easily constructed and assembled parts, one being the handle and the other the holder pivotally mounted upon the handle so that it may be turned to lie substantially kparallel therewith or at right angles thereto. The holder may be turned to either side of the handle, so that when one corner of the blade becomes. dull, as while cutting paper, the holder may be turned to the other side of the handle so that the vother corner of the blade will be foremost .and capable of use for continued cutting of paper or the like. The invention will be4 fully understood from the detailed description hereinafter presented, reference being had to the vaccompanying drawings, inwhich:`
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the cutting tool of my invention, a safety razor blade 60 being shown in the holder andthe ,holder being illustrated as lying substantially parallel with the handle of the tool;

Fig. 4 is a plan view of the tool with the blade-holder shown as turned to stand at right angles to the handle thereof;
Fig. 5 is a sectional view, partly broken' away, throuh the tool, taken on the dotted llne 5-5 of Fig. 6 is a Fig. 7 is a erspective view of the safety razor blade il ustrated in the holder in Figs. 1, 3 and 5, said blade being of the well known American Ever-Ready type.
In the drawin 10 designates the holder, 11 the blade hel thereby and 12the handle.
The holder 10 is made from one piece of sheet metal folded longitudinally upon it self to provide a smooth front member 13 and a back member 14 and to form between said members a pocket 15 for the blade 11, said pocket bein closed at its upper edge 16 and open at its ower edge. The end 17 of the pocket 15 is open to admit the blade 11 endwise to said pocket, and at the opposite end of the holder a lip 18 formed on the back-member 14 is bent across a portion of the pocket to serve asa stop for arresting the blade when the latter i's inserted into the pocket. The pocket 15`has downwardly converging o poslte lsurfaces to snugly receive and ho d the blade, with the cutting edge of the blade exposed below the lower edge of the holder 10. The back edge portion of the blade is thickened by the usual folded metal strip 9 thereon and this strip is at its lower edges, firmly engaged by the converging walls of the pocket 15, while the blade pro er is closely 'engaged on its opposite faces y the lower edges of the front and back members 13, 14 between which the cutting edge of the blade rejects, as shown in Fig. 5. The upper e ge of the back or strip 9 of the blade 1s against the top fold of the holder 10, and the blade as a whole by reason of its construction and the construction of the holder 10 is, when in theholder,

The back-member 14V of the holder 10 is open at 19 and the metal removed from the member 14 creating this o ening is, in part, utilized to form; upper an lower lips 20, 21 which arehorizontally elongated and bent rearwardly from and at right angles to the member 14 of the holder, as illustrated in Figs. 3, 4 and 5. The lips 20, 21 are formed with vertically aligned a ertures or holes 22 and also with outward y oppositely projecting recesses 23 extending rearwardly from the holes or apertures 22, these recesses serving, as explained hereinafter, as latches for the holder when the handle 12 is at right angles thereto, as shown in Fig. 4. The l1 s 20, 21 are, near their end portions, formed with corresponding forming lu s 24, which, at the roper time, engage the andle 12 to latch t e holder in position when the same is turned to one side or the other of said handle, as illustrated more clearly in Figs. 2 and 3. The entire holder is in one integral piece of sheet metal and consequently is very durable and may be constructed at reasonable expense.
rlhe handle 12 is in one integral folded bar of sheet steel arranged vertically on edge and comprises upper and lower members 25, 26 connected at their outer ends by the curved bend 27 and at their inner ends being formed with oppositely outwardly projecting trunnions or pintles 28, 29 adapted to enter the apertures 22 in the lips 20, 21, as shown. The members 25, 26 of the handle 12 may be squeezed toward each other at their outer ends and introduced between the lips 20, 21 and then allowed to expand to carry the trunnions or pintles 28, 29 into the apertures 22 of the lips 20, 21. This manner of assembling the handle 12 and holder 10 obviates all riveting or the use of extra parts, and in addition, by reason of the spring action. of the members 25, 26 of the handle, the handle and holder become very securely`y connected in a pivotal manner allowing the holder to be turned to either side of the handle or to a position, shown in Fig. 4, at right angles to and across the front end of the handle. When the holder is turned to stand across the front end of the handle, the members 25, 26 will spring into the depressions 23 of the lips 20, 21 and said depressions cooperating with said members 25, 26 will lock the holder in position, as will be understood on reference to` Fig. 4. When the holder is turned to lie against the side of the forward end of the handle 12, the spring in the members of the handle will permit the inwardly depressed portions or lugs 24 of the lips 20, 21 to ride over said members and after said portions 24 have passed over the members of the handle, said members will spring outwardly against the facing sides of the lips 20, 21 beyond them and then said portions A24 will serve as latches to secure the holder in position, either at one side or the other of the handle 12 as the case may be. When the holder is in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, one pair of vertically aligned lugs inward depressions Lacasse 24 serve as latches, and when the holder is turned to the opposite side of the forward end of the handle the other pair of lugs 24 serve as the latches for keeping the holder stationary while the blade is in use.
r1`he forward ends of the handle members are of redu fed Vertical width and are made straight and arallel so as to present uniform flat surfraces to the facing surfaces of the lips 20, 21.
The cutting tool comprises the holder 10, blade 11 and handle 12, each being in one unitary piece and all being very readily assembled. My invention resides in the simple and durable construction of the holder 10 and handle 12, each lacking complication and both being capable of assembly without the use of special tools or added parts. rlhe holder and handle may be disassembled by squeezing the forward ends of the handle members toward each other to a sufficient extent to withdraw the pintles or stubs 28, 29 of the handle from the apertures 22 of the holder.
What 1 claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A. cutting tool of the character described comprlsing a holder for a safety razor blade having a thickened back portion, and a handle pivotally connected on a vertical plane with said holder at the back thereof and intermediate the ends of the holder, said holder being a folded piece of sheet metal affording front and back members between which is formed a pocket having downwardly converging walls for the blade, said pocket being closed at its upper edge, open at one end to admit the blade and open at its lower edge to expose the cutting edge of the blade, and said back member having integral rearwardly extending -lips to which said handle is connected.
2. A cutting tool of the character described comprising a holder for a safety razor blade having a thickened back portion, and a handle pivotally connected on a vertical plane with said holder at the back thereof and intermediate the ends of the holder, said holder being a folded piece of sheet metal affording front and back members between which is formed a pocket having downwardly converging walls for the blade, said pocket being open at one end to admit the blade and open at its lower edge to expose the cutting edge of the blade, and said back member having integral rearwardly extending upper and lower apertured lips to which said handle is connected, and said handle consisting of a folded spring bar whose free ends have vertically extending pintles adapted to enter the apertures in said lips and be there held by the spring action of the bar.
