iii T E S CHARLES F. MASON, Ol PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
INDICATING DEVICE FOR AUTOMOBILES.
Application filed November 28, 1923.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. MAsoN,
a citizen of the United States, and resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny a and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Indicating Devices for Automobiles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to an indicator for automobiles.
The object of my invention is to provide a device which can be readily attached to the instrument board of an automobile, sim- 1a ple and compact in form, to indicate to the driver the condition of his tires and bat tery, and the time when oil and gasoline were last purchased.
To these ends my invention comprises the 20 novel features hereinafter set forth and claimed:
In the accompanying drawing Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my improved device attached to the instrument board which is broken away. F ig. 2 is a face view of one of the record cards, Fig. 3 is an enlarged section on the line 3-3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4.- is an enlarged sectional view of the indicator dial and Fig. 5 is a face View of same.
In the accompanying drawing the numeral 2 designates a suitable holder formed of sheet-brass or any other suitable metal, said holder being stamped to form the card-holder 3 with the inwardly projecting bottom por tion 4, and the side flanges 5 by means of which the holder is attached to the instrument board 6 by screws 7.
The holder is provided with the windows 8, 9. 10, 11, 12, 18, 14, and 15. Any desired number of windows, however, may, of course, be employed.
The windows 8, 9, 1O, 11 and 12 are for disclosing the condition of the tires, and accordingly said windows are designated by the terms Tire L F, Tire R F, etc.
The windows 13, 14: and 15 are designated, respectively, Oil, Battery, Gasoline.
A recording disk is provided for the gasoline, and accordingly the holder is provided with the small window 16, and the handle 17. which is connected by the screw 18 with the lug 19, which is attached to the dial 20 carrying the numbers 5, 10, 15, 20, etc., all as clearly shown in Figs. 4. and 5.
Serial No. 677,573.
Within the card receptacle 3 of the holder are the record cards 21, which are printed with the rectangular blanks 8 9 10", etc., corresponding in size and location to the windows 8, 9, 10, etc., so that when said card is inserted in the holder, the blank spaces will appear at their respective windows. The cards are also provided with the same terms as those on the outside of the holder. For instance, the upper blank space 8 might hear the mileage which would indicate the number of miles the front tire had traveled. In the same manner mileage would be inserted in the other blank spaces and would appear through the correspond ing windows of the holder. In the same manner the oil mileage and gasoline mileage would likewise be recorded. The battery window would bear the date when filled.
In addition to the above, the amount of gasoline would be recorded by the dial which would be turned by the handle 17, thereby indicating the number of gallons.
In order to lock the cards in place in the holder, the said cards may be provided with the enlarged aperture 28, with the contracted inlet 24:, so that the cards when lowered into the holder will engage the locking member 25 which is arranged to turn in a bearing 26 on the front-plate of the holder, :1 key 27 being provided for turning said locking member. When the cards are inserted the locking member will be in a vertical position, and after the cards have been inserted, the locking member will be turner to the horizontal position shown in dotted lines Fig. 2, whereby the cards are held against withdrawal by the chaufieur or other unauthorized person.
hat I claim is:
In a device of the character described, the combination of a holder having a receptacle, the front-plate of said holder having windows formed therein with designating terms above said windows, a card in said holder having designating terms corresponding with the designating terms of said holder and registering therewith, and means for locking said card in the holder.
In testimony whereof I, the said CHARLES F. MAsoN, have hereunto set my hand.
CHARLES F. MASON.
