` MANUFACTURE OF RELIEF-ENGRAVED'PRINTING CYLINDERS.
`Application filed may 13,
To all whom-.it may concern: n
Be it known that I, EMIL T. NEBEN, a citizen of the ,United States, `and a resident of Ridgewood, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Relief-Engraved Printing `Cylinders, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description. j
The invention `relates to molds for casting peripherally closed relief engraved printing cylinders, such as shown yand described in the Letters Patent of the United States, No. A1,261,642,granted to me VJApril 1918.6 i The-fobjectof, thelpresent invention is to 4provirdelcertain new and, useful improve- .ments-in'the' manufactureof relief engraved printing, cylinders `whereby. `the printing cylinder` .Y is4 rendered absolutely. true 4and even, and practically freefof imperfections at the 'printing face to insure'the subsequent making` of perfect impressions when used *in the art of continuousk rotary printing.
AAnother objectV is to permit .they manufaci ture, of relief engraved printing cylinders in an exceedingly economical .manner and to allow of` varying the: thickness `of the metal A of the printing cylinder fon.` strength and In order to produce the desired result, ,the invention consists essentially ink lirst pro- .,ducingl; an electrotype platefmbending the same into'a cylinder with `the printing face ydisposed exteriorly, placingv the/printing cylinder into a` mold having a highly polished L.interior surface, then subjecting the interior surface ,offthe printing cylinder to ahammering action t force thefprinting face of the .cylinder into intimate contact withithe polished innerfsurface of the mold g-The invention `,also consists in ysuitableto the inner` surface of the printing cylinder tof-give @By-desired thicknessfto 'the metal i921-, serial Nojfieaieo.
describedand then specifically pointed .outy
in the claims. Y
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented yin the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference 'indicate ycorresponding parts in all the views.
VFigure 1 is a face view ofthe electroplate;
Figure 2 an outline view of the apparatus for bending the electroplate into cylindrical shape; s y
Figure Slis an ,end view of the printing cylinder with ythe contacting side edges soldered together;
Fv'gure tis a similar view ofthe printing cylinder e,within ,they mold to be hammered'into true and even shape;l .Figure 5 is anenlarged sectional side elekvation oftheapparatus for providing the printing cylinder with" a backingg' y Figure 6 'is a sectional plan view ofthe same on `the line 6-6 of Figure 5; and
Figure y7- is a reduced end` view ofy the finished printing cylinder. n I In order l to .produce thenrelief engraved printing cylinder, I proceed jin detail as follows:` L pen and ink,` or awash yjdrawing is iirstrnazle `and matched on all sides'fwhen y curvefdf 'on a wooden roll'. `From 'thiszdrawinglis `made ay negative `in line or 'half-tone 'andlprinted on' Zinc or copper and etched in "the usualv manner. `A plate thusjprepared "ferme an original stocky plate `froni which is made an electrotype 10,A shown in Figure.1j, lhaving a raised. printing surface 11. j The; electr'opla*tev 10 is placed between two protecting members 12 and '13 and is then passed ,throughk a bending machine having three cylinders .14, v15 and 16 to bend the electroplate intoa peripherally closed relief Aengraved printingl cylinder 20,v shownv in Figure. Theabutting edgesofthecylinder20jare soldered together leither through- 'outfy'the lengthv of theV joint ,or in several places to maintainV the shapey of thecylinder.
lThe l cylinder f '20"*isA next placed [into a inold 121 having anexceedingly highly v"polished finteriorfsurfaceu[against which yabuts the printing face' 11of the cylinder 20. The 'interior surface of the y.printing cylinder 20 is 4new subjected toa hammering action, A preferably v.bytheuse of anjelectric hammer,
to "forcev v intofintimate vet.
contact with the polished 'inner :surface "of the moldk 21 to render the'printing face true and even. n
The printing' cylinder 20, after'being removed from the mold 21, is placed-into a v'mold 30 with theprinting face v11 in Contact withy the'interior surface ofthis mold 30.
The mold is made in sections 31 connected with each other by hinges 32'to` permitof convenientlyopening and closing the. mold. A lockingde'vice 33 of any approvedtconfv struction iS usedto lholchthe sections 3l lockedfwhen inclosed position.v Within the 'mold 3() andwspaced rfrom the .innerjsuriace of the 'printinglcylinderBD is a tubular core 35 made in sections 36 havingl overlapping ksidesy37V to allow the sections 316 of the core 35 to expand and contract, as will be readily understood.by'ireerence to Figurew. v.The
inner ,surface-of eachclorefsection vis pro vided with a number 'of vertically spaced wedges40-each having a dovetail 'groove 4l into which tits a. correspondinglyyshaped v tongue 42 ofa wedge 43 securedto'a mandrel 44,- .p-referably of tubular l shape, .f and held centrally-'withinthe vcore It will be noticed thaty by the arrangement described vth'elpairs ofi wedges40fand 43..coactwith each other to expand or contract the sections 36 of the core '35 lon moving the mandrel 44 upward or downward. The loweropen .endy of lthe mandrel 44 ts ontoa guide pin 45 engaging at itsv lower yend a central opening 46 "formed inarbottomor base plate47 v closingthe lowerend,` of the moldl 30 and the core35f( The guide pin 45 is provided with .azcolla'r 48 seatedonfthe upperl surface of y jthe bottom 47ste support the pin 45r in Vertical position .and centrally withinl the mold 30. The 4upper portion of the' mandrel 44- is`provided with ascrew thread50 in which.; screws a screw rod 5l having la smoothupper portion 52 mounted to turn in Qa loearing53 arranged-within the upper end of the vcore 35. The screwrod 51 is provided with acollar 54 supporting the bear-r ing 53, rand a retaining collar -55 is attached tothe'smooth portion 52 and isseated on the top ofthe bearing 53.' The upperend y530i ythe smooth portion 52- of the screw rodlis made polygonal for the application of a wrenchwor otherftoolto. permit of turningtheScrew rod 45,1with a view to move the l mandrel44up ordown yaccording tothel directionin which the screwfrodfl is turned. Thus when the screw rod 51-is turned in one direction the mandrel 44 is raisedand the" .ffpairsrot wedges 43.407move thesections 36 6ov ,l l n 4 v 43,:40 movethe sections 36 of the core 35 outn ,.ward.,I Thus by the: arrangement described. the'space 60 between`the`core'35 andtheinofthe-core "35 inward, and on Vmoving the mandrel 44 down-ward thepairs of wedges ner surface of the printing cylinder 20 can bel increased and diminished endl es this space is filledwith molten metal for forming a backing for the printing cylinder 2() it is evident that the backing will be of more or less thickness. The bearing 53 is provided with projections--65 preferably in the form of the heads of screws screwed to the bear-y ing 53, the "said projections'l 65 yengaging openings 66 formed in the corresponding secthepipes 7,0 are connected by a pipe 71`with t a" vessel containing l the'moltenv metal for forming the backing vfor the printing cylinderf'20. .Therorey 35 'is preferably :prof-l' tected by a covering 75 of-pressboard'. A closing ring 76 isl seated on the top `lovf"the core 35. and the top of the, printingjcylinder 2O to 4closepth'e upper endofthe'fspace 60 to preventwthe discharge "of molten metal from `the space .60` at this'endl'- From' the foregoing it will be seen that the apparatus for providing the printingA cylinder QOfwith a backing can be readily opened and closed for the insertion and removal Vof thefprinting cylinder, and the sections 36 of the core 3 5 can be readily. adjusted' inward oroutward-y to provide the printing cylinder/20` with a backing 74y otl a desired thickness Ringff76 may be providedfwithone or more suitable vents to permit the air, to escapefas the/inoltenmetal enters. ,c v n f Having `,thus describedl my inventiomI I claim aswnew .and desire'to` secure yby Letters Patent: A y f I i 1.
