R. AVERILL v MIXER Filed July 51. 1922 ROGER AVL'R/LL INVENTOR.
ATTORNEY BY Kim M.
Patented Apr. 29, 1924.
HUNITEDJSTATES ROGER AVERILL, L08 ARGELEB, CALIFORNIA.
Application filed July 81, 1898. Serial No. $78,845.
To all whom it may com-em:
Be it known that I, Room: Avnnmn, a citizen of the United States, vresidin at Los An les, county of Los Angeles, tate of Cali ornia, have invented new and use ful Improvements in Mixers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to trucks employed in concrete -work, and has for its object the rovision of a vtruck having a body for t e transportation of the dry ingredients of the concrete, from a central supply, where they are loaded in the proper proportion, to the particular work, the truck also including a distinct mixing and conveying apparatus into which the, load of dry material is fed when the work has been reached, and a suitable water supply also discharging into the mixing apparatus, for hydration of the dry gravel, sand, cement, and the like, during the movement of the same through the mixing and conveying apparatus, in order that properly mixed wet concrete may be finally discharged from the jtruck.
The invention will be readily understood from the following description of the acoompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a side elevation of. a truck constructed in accordance with the invention, and shown partly in medial vertical section.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of the transmission of the truck.
The improved truck construction includes a usual chassis 1, wheels 2, transmission housed within casin 3, and drive shaft 4,
" the power of propu sion of the truck being supplied by the usual motor 5.
he dy for the truck is supported upon stringers 6 carried by the si e frames 0 the chassis, and the body may be of usual desi 11 extending from the cab 7 to the rear of t e truck, and adapted to car of loose, dry material, such as san gravel, and cement.
The truck body is illustrated as comprising the base 10, and side and end walls 11,
with a suitable discharge opening 12 in the front medial portion of the base.
mixing and conveying mechanism is mounted beneath the truck body, and extends the length thereof, with its front end a load in alinement with, and communicating with the interior of the truck body through the opening 12.
The mixing mechanism includes a shell 13 supported from the underside of base 10, and forming an elongated conduit termispout 14 beyond the nating in a dischargp rear end of the true A shaft 15 is journaled in this conduit, and carries a spiral blade 16, so that when said shaft is rotated,
the material fed throu h opening 12 from' the truck -body to the s ell 13, will be thoroughly mix'edand moved along by the spiral f ,vided with valvular connecting means 21,
whereby a hose or the like may be readily connected to said pipe.
The driving connection for rotating the spiral conveyor is p-referabl actuated by the motor of the truck, said driving connection being inoperative when material is being transported in the truck, and adapted to 'be engaged, through operation of suitable control mechanism, when the work is reached and after transmission 3 is placed in neutral, or inoperative position with relation to drive shaft 4:, in order to actuate the mixing and conveying mechanism, for hydration and discharge of the material in the truck.
The driving connection is shown as comprising an auxiliary transmission having f the shaft 22', said auxiliary transmission being mounted in a housing 23 supported by the main transmission housing 3. The auxiliary transmission is driven in any usual manner from the power shaft extending from motor 5 into housing 3, and is provided with a manual control lever 25 for 'operatively engaging or disengaging the and a sprocket chain 28 is received on said sprockets, so that when shaft 22 is rotated by the motor 5, the spiral conveyor will be driven thereby.
It will be noted that by the use of a truck as thus described, rehandling of the concrete material, as is the present practice, is eliminated. The dry ingredients for the concrete, are mixed and loaded in the truck body in the proper proportion, at the central plant, and the truck then hauls the material to the work. The spiral conveyor and mixer is then set in motion, and the material is shoveled through opening 12 into the same, with the required amount of water being supplied through pipes 17 for hydration of-the dry material. The Water and ;;m-aterial for the concrete are thoroughly mixed in the conveyor mechanism, and the wet concrete is finally discharged through spout 14, ready for use.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred practical embodiment of the device, it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Vhat is claimed is:
1. A motor driven truck, a body mounted on said truck and having a fiat bottom spaced slightly above the truck drive mechanism, said bottom havingad ischarge opening therein at the front end of said body and comprising a relatively small portion of the area of said bottom whereby a load of loose material may be carried on said bottom without movement of the main portion of the load through said opening, a casing mounted beneath the bottom of said body above said drive mechanism and extending the length of said body and commu'nicatin at its forward end with the opening in sai bottom and forming a discharge at its rear end, a rotatable spiral conveyor and mixer in said casing, a power shaft driven by the truck motor, a power transmission between said shaft and said drive mechanisimand an auxiliary power transmission between said power shaft and said spiral conveyor having means for disengaging the same.
2. A motor driven truck, a body mounted on said truck and having a fiat bottom spaced slightly above the truck drive mechanism, said bottom havingadischarge opening therein at one end of said body and comprising a relatively small portion of the area of said bottom whereby aload of loose material may be carried on said bottom without movement of the main portion of the load through said opening, a casing mounted beneath the bottom of said body above said drive mechanism and extending the length of said body and communicating at one end with the opening in said bottom and forming a discharge at its opposite end, and a rotatable spiral conveyor and mixer in said casing.
3. A motor driven truck, a body mounted on said truck and having its bottom spaced above the truck drive mechanism, said bottom having a discharge opening therein, a casing mounted beneath the bottom of said body above said drive mechanism and communicating at one end with the opening in said bottom and forming a discharge at its opposite end, and conveying and mixing means in said casing.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
