Description

'April 29, 1924-v H. WAYTE SPARK PLUG Filed June 17. 1921 Hull- I r u HARRY Wavre, or
KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR ONE-HALF T0 HEIRIVIN GUMBINSKY, OF KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN.
f SPARK PLUG'.
Appncanon flied June 1v, 1921. serial No. 478,307.
To all whom t may concern;
Be it known that I, HARRY WAYTE, a citi- YZen of the United States, residing in the city and county of KalamazooState of Michigan, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in 4Spark Plugs, of which the following is a specification.
y This invention relates toiniprovements in spark plugs. l y The main objects of this invention are :y
First, to provide an improved spark plug which can be cleaned without removing from the cylinder.
Second, to provide an improved. spark plug having this advantage in which the electrodes are stationary. Y
Third, to provide a spark plug having these advantages `which is very durable and 'is not expensive to manufacture.
Further objects and objects relating to structural details, willk definitely appear from the detailed description to follow. Y,
Ik accomplish the objectsofmy invention y by the devices and means described kin the following specification. The invention is clearly deiined and pointed outv in the claims. Y f
A structurewhich is ya rpreferred embodi ment of my invention is clearly illustrated Vin the accompanyingdrawings, lforming a part of this application inwhich: p.
F ig. I is a side view of an engine equipped with spark plugs embodying my improvements, the engine being shown conventionally. Y
Fig. II is a side elevation of one of my improved spark plugs.
Fig. III is a detail View mainly in vertical section on aA line corresponding to line 3-3 of Fig. et.
Fig. IV is a horizontal section on a line corresponding` and III.
In the drawings, similar reference cha-racters refer to similar parts throughout 'the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents an engine. My improved spark plug comprises a tubular body or shell 2 having an internal core seat 3 at its outer end'for the insulating to line 4--4 ofy Figs.y yII core 4. The core 4f has an annular shoulder 5 coacting with the seat 3, a packing 6 being preferably provided for the seat.
'The body 2 is provided at its inner end with an internal flange 7 providinga restricted opening 8. 'Ihe end of the body is recessed at 9. VThe body is provided with an annular external flange 10 providing a seat for the collar 11 carrying the discharge oonduity12.V The body has radial passages 13 disposed between its said external and internal seats, while the collar is provided with an annular groove-like passage la registering with the radial passages 13. The corel is supported with its inner end spaced from but adjacent to the restricted opening 17.
The electrode 15 is supported by the core with its tip centrally located in the restricted opening/7. Y The coacting grounded electrode 16 is mounted on the body with its tip within the recess 8, that is, rit extends. across the .opening so that both electrodes are cleaned by the air and gasesy Vrushing through theopening. l.
The conduit 12 is provided with an inwardly seating checkvalve 17 and with a manually controlled valve 18. The collar 11 is clamped uponkits seat by means of the, nut y19 threaded upon the body.k This permits of adjustment of the collar to bring kthe valve levers 20 into the desiredA operating relation,y permittingk them being connected to the operating rod 21, so that all of the valves may ybe opened at thek same time. With this arrangement when'the valves 18v are opened, the air on the compression stroke Y and the gases on the explosion stroke are f I have illustrated and described ymy improvements in the embodiment which I find very satisfactory, I have not attempted to Y illustrate lor describe certain `modifications and adaptations which I contemplate, as I may be desired.
; Having thus described my invention, what I olaim'as new and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is ,Y Y p 1. In a spark plug, the combination of a tubular body having an internal core seat at its outer end and an internal flange at its believe the disclosures made will enable vthose skilled in the art to which my inven- Y e tion relates to embody or adapt the same asy I noKV tip providing a restricted central'opening,
the inner end of said body being recessed, said bodyl having an external 'flange below Vsaid core-seat vand radial passages located between said internal and external seats, an insulating core disposed upon said coreseat with its inner end adjacent to said restrictked opening atthevinner end oAsaid-body,
an insulated electrode supported Yby said core with its tipcentrally of said restricted opening, an electrode mounted on said body 'withf itstip disposed centrally in said ref cess thereof, aY collar mounted on said eX- Vternal seat and provided with a discharge at itsouter end and an internal flange at its tip providing a restricted centralV opening, said ,body having an external flange belou7 said core seat and radial passages located between said internal and external seats, an
insulating core disposed upon Vsaid vcore seat with its inner end adjacent tosaid restricted opening at the inner end of said body, anelectrode supported by said corey with its tip' centrally" of' said restricted'opening, a collar inouiit'edon said eiliternalV seat and 'provided with a discharge conduit a'iid'with Yan yannular groove opening thereto .and registering with said radial passages, a manually controlled'valve for said discharge Aconduitlanfd an inwardly seating "check valve therefor disposed at the'inner side offsaid `manually controlled valve, and a clamping nut for said collar threaded upon said body whereby the collar may be adjustedrto position the manually controlled valve.
8. ln a spark plug, the coinb'inationoi' a tubular body having a restricted opening at its inner end and an external seat and radial passages above said seat, an insulating core, an electrode supported by said core with its tip within vsaid restricted opening,
a coacting electrode disposed adjacent said opening, a'fcollar mounted on said external seat and provided with a discharge conduit and with an annular groove opening thereto and registering withsaid radial passages, a manually controlled valve for said` discharge conduit and an inwardly seating check valve therefor disposed at the inner side of said manually controlled valve, and
a clamping nut for said collar threaded upon said 'body whereby the collar may be adjusted to position the manually controlled valve. K
' 1i. ln a sparlrf plug,'the combination of a tubularbody having an lexternal seat and radial passagesv above said seat, an insulating core, an electrode supported by said core, a collar mounted on said yexternal'seat and provided with adischargeconduit and with Van annular Ygroove opening thereto and registering with said radial passages, amanually controlled valve forsaid discharge conduitand an inwardly seating check/valve therefor disposed at the inner side of Vsaid manually controlled valve, and a clamping nut for said collar threaded upon said body whereby the collar may be adjusted to position the-manually controlled valve.
In witness whereof I'liave hereunto set my hand and seal.
Y HARRY AYTE.
