J. PUECH PLOWING MACHINE Filed Dec. 29 1920 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented Apr. 29, 1924.
JULES IUECH, OF PARIS, FRANCE.
PLOWING MACHINE.
Application filed December 29, 1920. Serial ne. 433,882.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULns PUEoH, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing in Paris, France, have invented new and useful Improvements in or Relating to' Plowing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to plowing machines having means for raising the plow shares, and consists in a device for automatically raising the plow shares, said device comprising a rear wheel, mounted on a fork secured to a sleeve rotatable about a pin which oscillates about a transverse trunnion, the free end of the said pin being connected to one or more springs, the ends of which are secured to the seat.
A seat is mounted on a metal blade and connected by any suitable means to the said spring. The free end of the metal blade on gages, under the action of the weight of the operator, with the fork of the wheel and locks the same in a fixed position, its travel being limited by the tension of the above mentioned spring or springs and by an adjustable stop.
A metal spindle terminates in a recessed box receiving the support of-the seat, within which box moves the pin secured to the fork of the wheel. This arrangement enables the device to be secured to any plow or similar apparatus.
A construction according to the invention is illustrated merely by way of example in the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal elevation of the invention showing its application to a Brabant plow driven by a tractor fore-carriage.
Figure 2 is a modified construction according to the invention, comprising an additional raising device.
The hub 2 of the wheel 1 is secured to a fork 3 which is made integral with a sleeve 4 mounted at 5 on the lower part of a pin 7 and secured by means of a nut 6 or any other suitable device, the sleeve 4; being freely rotatable about the journal 5.
The pin 7 is provided with a lug 8 by means of which it is mounted on a horizontal trunnion 9 about which it pivots.
The upper end of the pin 7 is provided with a ring 10 with which engage the ends of the springs 11. The pin 7 and its collar 8 which are movable about the trunnion 9, move in the interior of a recessed box 12 connected to a rod 13. This rod passes through two sockets or sleeves l4 and 15 mounted on the beam 16 of the plow and is secured at its end 17 by means of any suitable device, hey, bolt, etc. The recessed box 12 is provided with a circular flange 32 with which the plow engages for working positions or for the posi tilon )of returning on the road (horizontal ow p To the box 12 is secured a bent metal blade 18 on which is secured the seat 19 under which is arranged another rod 20 terminating in a handle.
To the blade 18 is riveted a metal bladev 21, also bent, the upper end 22 of which has a hole intended to afford passage to a screwthreaded rod 23 on which is screwed a han-' dle 24- forming a nut and enabling the tension of the springs to be adjusted by moving the said rod in the horizontal direction.
The end 25 of the rod 23 forms the point of attachment for the springs 11, the ends of which are secured-to the ring 10 of the pin 7. r
The lower end of the blade 21 terminates in a bent part 26 which engages between the prongs of the fork 3 and thus locks the wheel in the axis of the whole apparatus.
The whole of the device is secured to the plow 27 which in its turn is attached to the tractor fore-carriage 28 by means of a suitable coupling 20. p N
The working of the apparatus is as follows The apparatus being on the road, with the plowman on the seat, the apparatus can be steered by means of the hand wheel 30, the shares 31 of the plow mounted on a frame, being held in a horizontal plane parallel to the road by means of a device not shown in the drawing.
When it is desired to turn on the spot, the attendant descends from his seat. The pin 7 under the action of the springs 11, pivots about the trunnion 9 and assumes vertical position and raises the shares of the plow. At this moment, the part 26 of the blade 21 becomes disengaged from the fork, and the wheel 1 can turn freely about the pin 7, and assume any possible positions about the said pin.
The attendant merely has to get hold of the back of his seat by the handle 20 and to steer it as required.
On arriving in the field, the attendant 1 tree to turn. 7
oscillate in the interior of a box I of attachment for the plow so as to place the result of which is that brought into a at a suitable point, turns shares 33. in the vertical plane, and sits-on the seat. At that moment his weight lowers the plow and inplaces the tractor .plines the pin 7, the part 26 ofthe blade 21 looks the wheel 1 which consequently remains in the axis oi the apparatus.
The plow then works with the shares penetrating the soil. At the end of the furrow, the attendant descends from his seat, the
the pin 7 will be vertical position, the whole of the shares of the plow being raised, the attendant merely has i to turn his tractor by means of the handle 20, the wheel 1 being In a modified construction of the device the seat is fixed on a spindle which can supported by the frame of the apparatus; the upper end of the said spindle forming the point one or two springsbalancing the weight of the shares, and. the bottom end of. the said spindle locking the fork under the act-ion of the weight of the attendant. The handle 24 is used'tor regulating the tension of the springs.
The device could be applied to any kind of agricultural machine. In fact, the rod 13 could be separated from the body of the machine by removing the wiring device 17. It will "be suiiicient it the machine to which the device is to be fitted, has two sleeves such'as 15 and 14; enabling the rod 13 to be introduced and fixed.
In this case, the raising of the shares 7 c at the end of the field, will he produced automatically, before the stoppage, by the re 1 sistance of the soil, after the engaging gear 40 I hasbeen previously operated.
The fork 3 of the rearowheel is mounted on the sleeve 4: by means ot a horizontal pin apparatus, when the operator used, it, is very parting from' the.
menses 33' enabling the shares of the plow to be raised to a greater extent by pressing on the pedal 34. I
The device constitutes a simple and solid structure more particularly adapted for agricultural work, its working is easy, and the facility with which all the parts can be examined and kept in order are desirable qualities in agricultural machines which are usually entrusted to men more or less inexperienced. Moreover, the mobility of the g has vacated the seat, makes the turning of the whole very easy, and this turning oanfbe done on the spot whilst with the systems at present frequently necessary to have recourse to long and tedious maneuvers, ne-
--cessitating a large amount of space.
It will beobvious that the invention may be modified. in various ways, without despirit of the invention.
5 Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be: performed, I declare that what I claim is In a plowing machine a beam, a support fixed thereto, a pin pivotally securedto -the support for angular movement in a vertical plane, a fork pivotally ,connected to said pin for lateral swinging movement, a wheel mounted in the fork, tensioning lifting .mLEs PUECH.
