To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that we, JOHN BINDER and; EMILIO ALBERTI, a subject ofthe King of Hungary and a citizen ot' the United States, respectively, fand residents' of thefcity of N ew York, in the county Aci Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feedin Attachments for Crown-'C'orklvlal.n`ng L(lkachines,
of whichthe ollowingis a specification.
The presentinvention relates to machines for manufacturing bottle, jar, canand likeA closures of thecap variety, including those termed crown corks. rlhe invention pertains more particularly .to means Vfor feeding the sealing disks of cork 0r similar material oi the closures to the assembling devices oi' the machine.
ln machines of this type a mass of sealing disks is placed indiscriminately into a hopper, wherefrom they are fed into a tube that leads to the transporting means, which conveys the sealing disks, one after the other, tc the assembling elements of theca'p making machines; `l/Vhile it has been found comparatively easy to causethe disks to pass toward thel said tube, it has been found very difficult to lead them into the tube without clogging the inlet to the latter, and V:it-has been found almost impossible to stack the disks properly insaid tube. The troubles arise mainly due to the tact that the sealing disks are very lightin weight. Other diili` culties have been experienced in these feed- V ing devices for the reason that the disks vary to some extent in their thicknesses and are apt to take a curved or bent shape when being prepared or treated before they Vare put upon the assembling machine.
The main object ofthe present invention is to provide a simple and elicient attachment for vcap making machines, which automatically delivers thesealing disks from a mass to the assembling machine without regard to their thicknesaweight 'and more or less curved shapes. A
7W ith these and other objects in View, which will more fully appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the combination, arrangement and construction of parts hereinafter Jfully described, pointed out in the appended claims and'illustrated vin the accompanying drawings,'it being understood that many tol b'igure 1 is a central vertical` section: taken through a feedingV attachment constructed 1n accordanceuwith the present. invention; Fig. 2 is a top plan viewthereO; Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 3 3 of F ig. 1 on a larger scale; Fig. 4 is vasection taken, on line 4 4 of Fig. 1, also on a larger scale; Fig. 5 is aI section taken on line 5 5 of `Fig. 1, also lon a larger'scaleyFig'. f6 is a section similar to Fig. lshowing on a larger scale the top portion of the apparatus; and Fig. 7 is a section taken on line 7 7 of Fig. 6.
. ln the drawings, the .numeral 10 indicates a portion of the frame ofA a crown corkassembling machine, having upon its table portion 11 mounted an upwardly extending Y support112, which carriesa hopper 13, that is in the case illustrated in the'dra'wings of cylindrical shape, its lower portion 14 being conical to cause the disk therein to move toward its longitudinal' center. line. The bottom 15 of thisV hopper is made cfa separate piece and is adapted, as 'will hereinafter spo per, is seated eccentricall'y ina' bushing 18 the latter being rotatably mounted in ajstep bearing 19, that is suitably attached to the support 12. Toreduceundue friction between the bushing and' bearing, thereare formed raceways Q0 and 21 in the saidbushing and bearing, respectively, and in these raceways run balls 22V inthe well "known manner. The bushing may be rotated in any suitable manner `from the main ldriving p' shaft of fthe assembling machina, for in-` stance there maybe mounted upon the bushin an extension 31 of the support 12.
The tubular outlet 17 of the hopper bottom is in alignment with the flaring mouth 32 of a stationary substantially vertically extending tube 33, vleading to the transporting means 34 of the machine, which conveys the sealing disks one after the other to the assembling mechanism. The tube 33 is held above the transporting mechanism liy a standard 35, and is provided in its Wall With longitudinal slots 36, permitting of the insertion of a pointed instrument for the purpose or" properly arranging the disks therein, should by accident some of the same travel therein edgevvise. -Y
Upon the upper face of the bottom, and more particularly near itsperipheral portion there are formed lugs 37, which serve to agitate the mass of sealing disks in the hopper.' Lugs 38 are formed` around the outlet of the bottom and serve a similar purpose. ln order 'to prevent the Whole mass of sealing disks from resting upon the bottom and from clogging the outlet thereof, there is held a substantial distance above the said bottom Within the hopper an inverted vsubstantially funnel-shaped member 39. Y
The hopper bottom is provided With perforations 40, having each a diameter that is smaller than that of a sealing disk. As
the hopper. bottom is oscillated or vibrated,
broken disks and foreign matter are sifted out from the mass. To prevent such broken parts and foreign matter from falling upon the step-bearing, there is formed upon the tubular extension 17 a collar 41, covering the step-bearing.
Near the outlet of the tube 33 there is :formed in the same a slot 42, in alignment with Which is held upon the standard 35 a shitable stop 43, that is adapted Vto be projected into the said `tube so as to prevent disks therein 'from falling onto the transporting means 34, This mechanism is made use ot if the assembling device gets out of order and itv becomes necessaryto stop the feeding ot the disks thereto.
The operation of the device is as follows: mass of sealing disks isvplaced indiscriminately into the hopper and rotation impart-ed to the bushing 18. Inasmuch as the tubular outlet of the hopper bottom is seated eccentrically in said bushing and a rotation oi the hopper bottom is prevented, as above described, they said bottom Will be oscillated or vibrated, with the result that the disks therein in traversing the outlet of the bottom are caused to pass into the tubular extension thereof. As this tubular extension oscillates or vibrates above the flaring Lmouth of the tube 33, the disks will be discharged into the said tube. The continuous oscillation or vibration of the tubular extension 17 of the hopper bottom causes. a proper stacking of the disks therein. No matter in what position they arrive in the tubular extension, they Will be brought by the continuous vibrating motion, before they reach the flaring mouth of the tube 33,' into substantially 'f' lt is obvious that, While herein a specific` means vhas been disclosedv fory vibrating or oscillating the hopper bottom, anyother suitable means could be provided Without departing from the invention, which liesl f mainly in vibrating the hopper bottom or that part thereof in which its outlet is formed *for the purpose specified. Attention is called to the fact that, While herein the tubular extension 17 of the hopper bottom has been shovvn of considerable length, it may be dimensioned otherwise, care being taken so as not to makeit too short'it having been found that the proper stacking' of the disks depends mainly upon the time during which they are subjected to ,vibrating motion. What we claim is y- 1. ln a device of the character described, the combination with al hopperrhaving a bottom provided With a tubular outlet andv carrying lugs upon its upper face, of a stationary tube leading from said outlet and provided with a mouth having a diameter larger than that of said outlet,
and means forl vibrating said bottom and I' outlet, means for vibrating said tubular out! let in relation to said tube, and an inverted substantially funnel-shaped member' disposed vvithin said hopper a substantial distance above said outlet. f
3. ln a device of the character described, the combination with a hopper having a bottom provided with a tubular outlet, of a stationary tube leading from saidoutlet and provided with a mouth having a diameter.

4. In a device of the character described, the combination with a hopper having a perforated bottom provided with a tubular outlet, of a stationary tube leading from said outlet and provided with a mouth having a diameter larger than that of said outlet,
means for vibrating said bottom and outlet4 in relation Vto said tube, and an inverted substantially funnel-shaped member disposed Within said hopper a substantial dis tance above said outlet.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination With a hopper having a tubular outlet, of means for vibrating said outlet, and an'inverted substantially funnel-shaped member disposed Y Within said hopper a substantial distance above said outlet.
6. In a device of the character described, the combination With a hopper having a bottom provided With a tubular outlet, of means for vibrating said bottom and out-l let, and an inverted substantially funnelshaped member disposed Within said hopper a substantial distance above said outlet.
7. In a device of the character described,
the combination with a hopper having a per-V forated bottom provided With a tubular outlet, of means for vibrating said bottom and outlet, and an inverted substantially funnel-shaped member disposed within said hopper a substantial distance above4 said outlet. Y Y

In a device of the character described, the combination with a hopper having a concave bottom provided With a tubular outlet, of a stationary tube leading from said outlet and provided With a mouth having a diameter larger than that of said outlet, means for vibrating said bottom and outlet in relation to said tube, and an inverted substantially funnel-shaped member disposed Within ,said hopper a Substantial distance above said outlet.

In a device ofthe character described, the combination with a hopper having a perforated concaved bottom provided With a tubular outlet, of means for vibrating said bottom and outlet, and an inverted substantially funnel-shaped member disposed Within said hopper a substantial distance above said outlet.

In a device of the character described, the combination with a hopper having a bottom provided with a tubular outlet and carrying lugs upon its upper face, of a stationary tube leading from said outletv and provided with a mouth having a diameter larger than that of said outlet, meansv vfor vibrating said bottom and outlet inrelation to said tube, and an inverted substantially funnel-shaped member disposed Within' said hopper a substantial distance above said outlet.
