UNITED STATES PATENT OF weer Fics.
CHARLES F. PFLANZE, 0F ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF T0 STEPHEN S. ADAMS, 0F ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
ENvELoPE Application. led December 23, 1921. Serial No. 524,403.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. PFLANZE, a citizen of the United States of America, a resident of the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented cer-tain new and useful Improvements in Envelopes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact de-y scription, reference being had to ythe accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.` y p This invention relates to improvements in envelopes, and more particularly to an envelope having an address window, the object being to provide means whereby a relatively small address sheet can be secured to an envelope of this kind so as to retain the address at the window in the envelope.
The invention is especially adapted for envelopes intended to contain a large article and a smaller address sheet bearing the name and address to be -exposed at the window, or aperture, in the envelope. For example, automobile license plates are usually mailed in large envelopes, and it is customary to' use separate envelopes for the registration certificates bearing the names and addresses of the automobile ownersr to whom the license plates are mailed. Heretofore license plates and certificates have been mailed in o separate envelopes, the certificates being much smaller than the license plates, so if an ordinary certificate was properly arranged in a large window envelope-to expose the address at the window, the small certificate could be readily displaced from the window, thereby concealing the address.
According to the present invention, a registration certificate, or other-small address sheet, can be secured in a large window envelope so as to positively retain the address at the window. More specifically stated, the small address sheet can be secured to prevent accidental displacement of the sheet relative to the window, but after the envelope has been opened the address sheet can be readily detached and removed from the envelo e. Y
Wit the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention comprises the novelconf struction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in; the accompanying drawings whereinis shown the preferred embodiment of the invention. However, it is to be understood that the invention comprehends changes, variations and modifications which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended. ,Ik
,Fig I is an elevational view of a window envelope embodying the features of this invention, showing the envelope as it appears when the address sheet is secured therein.
Fig. I I is a view similar to Fig. I showing the gummed closure flap in its open position.
Fig. vIII is a detail view of an address sheet adapted to be secured in the envelope.
Fi I is an enlarged section on the line IV- V in Fig. I.
To illustra-te the invention,'I have shown an elongated envelope adapted to contain a State automobile license, said envelope having a gummed closure fiap 1 atone end and a nonsealing fiap2 at the other end provided with a washer 3, to which a string 4 is secured, the body of the envelope having a washer 5 secured by a rivet around which the string may be wound to secure the fiap 2 in its closed position.
The side ofmthe envelope onto which the fiaps 1 and 2 are' folded l,isprovided with an elongated opening 7 formed adjacent to the fiap 1. This opening may be termed an address window. A designates an address sheet small enough to lie in different portions of the large envelope, and adapted to be secured, as will be hereafter described, to retain the address at the window 7. As indicated by Fig. III, the address sheet may be an automobile certificate bearing the name and address of an, automobile owner, as well as the other matter identifying the automobile.
In the preferred form of the invention, the addresssheet A is provided with a fastening member 8 at one end adapted to 'befolded on the line 9 (Fig. III). The address sheet andits fastening member 8 may be a single sheet of paper weakened at the line v9, preferably by perforatin'g the paper as represented by the dots forming this line.
cel
'Ihe address sheet can therefore be torn from illustrate this feature; I have shown gum X ber 8. After' the member 8 has been foldedv and arranged in the position shown by Fig. II, the gummed flap l can be moistened and closed, so as to Cementsaid flap 1 to the body of the envelope and also to the fastening member 8. The address sheet is thus attached to the envelope to retain :the address at the window 7. p
The means for securing the address sheet may also include gum X (Fig. III) applied to the fastening member 8 to attach the same to the body of the envelope. This is not absolntelylnecessary, but it enables the fastening member to be closely held before the flap l is closed, and if said, flap l is not properly sealed, the address sheet will be fastened by the gum X on its-fastening member. r
The non-sealing flap 2 can be opened to, permit removal of the contents of the en velope, and the small address sheet A can be readily torn along the line 9 and removed from the fastening member 8.
I claim:
