EARTH ANCHOR.

To all whom 'it/may concern.'
Be it "known that I, GEORGE M. WISE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Polk, in thecountyfof Ashland and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Earth Anchors, of which the followingl is a specification.
My invention relates to earth anchors designed particularly for anchoring in the ground, posts or other members to which hauling,- apparatus may be attached for the moving of heavy bodies such as stalled motor trucks and the like.
An important object of the invention is the provision of a novel and improved post anchor which may be readily locked in position in the ground and removed therefrom.
A further object of the invention is to furnish a post anchor which is simple in construction, highly efiicient in use, and which may be manufactured at a relatively low cost.
With these and other objects in view, as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention comprises a novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, and in order that the same may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.

Figure 1 is a central longitudinal sectional view showing the anchor in inoperative position;
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the anchor in operative position, and
Fig. 3 is a section through the device, taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring specifically to the drawing, in which for the purpose of illustration, the preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed, and wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views, numeral 5 denotes a casing of any suitable length or diameter, at one end of which there is secured a bracket 6 by means of bolts 6a. A lever 7 is fulcrumed intermediate its ends to the bracket 6 by means of a bolt 8, and carries at one end a depending rod 9 which is pivotally connected to the lever 7 by a bolt 10. The rod 9 hangs in the casing 5 and is pivoted at its lower end to a link 11 through the medium of a bolt 12 passing through integral ears 12a of the rod 9. The link 11 in turn is 'hinged to an eax" 121 on the inner wall of the pipe as shown at 13.
The rod 9 also carries at its lower end a preferably integral hook 15 on the side opposite the ears 12a, and which is adapted to be forced laterallyy through an opening 16 in the casing 5 to embed itself in the earth to firmly hold the casing from removal.
In the upper portion of the casing 5 there are provided opposite holes 17 which are adapted to aline themselves with a hole 18 in the rod 9 when the hook is in anchoring position. il. cross-piece 19 may be inserted through the holes 17 and 18 when the hook 15 is in anchoring position to firmly hold the same from accidental withdrawal.
In practice, a suitable opening having been formed in the ground, the casing 5 is lowered therein, leaving its upper portion above. the ground for attachment of a windlass or other hauling attachment. The hook 15is resting within the casing in the position shown in Fig. 1. To actuate the hook 15 and force it through the opening 16 in the casing 5, the handle of lever 7 is depressed, raising the bar 9 and projecting the hook 15 laterally through the opening 16 and into the ground by means of the link 11 and its pivotal connection with the ears 14 and 123. The cross-piece 19 may now be inserted through the alined holes 17 and 18 in the casing and rod respectively, to securely hold the hook 15 from slipping back into the casing. It will be noted that the link 11 serves to positively guide the hook 15 through the opening 16 when the lever 7 is actuated.
While I have described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that Various changes and modificati ons may be made in the same within the spirit and scope of what is claimed hereinafter.
I claim:
1. An earth anchor comprising a casing, a rod in said casing, an anchor member carried at one end of said rod, a linked connection between said end of the rod and the casing, and said casing having a lateral opening` therein through which said anchor may be projected, and means associated with said rod for projecting said anchor through said casing.
2. An earth anchor comprising a casing, a rod in said casing, an anchor member carried at one end of said rod, a linked connection between said end of the rod and the cass lll@ ing, and said casing having a lateral opening through which said anchor may be projected, and a lever associated With the other end of said rod for actuating said rod to project said anchor through said casing.
3. An earth anchor comprising a casing having a lateral opening at one end, a rod in said casing, an anchor member carried at one endy of said rod and adapt-ed to be projected through said opening, a guiding connection between said end or the rod and said casing for projecting said anchor member through said opening, and means associated with said rod for actuating said anchor.
