COLLAESBLE GOMBIXIALION COT AND TABLE.
Application led July 30, 1923. Serial No. 654,661.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, JALMER loi-Him, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county oi' Milwaukee and Statey of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Collapsible Combination @ots and Tables; and l do hereby 4declare that the following is a lull, clear, and enact description thereof.
s My invention relates to improvements in 'iurniture and is particularly directed to that class adapted for use in restricted spaces.
The object oi my invention is to provide an article or Jurniture which is adapted to serve either as a cot or a table, and the same being so constructed that when either ot the two is in use the other is adapted to be folded in such a manner that its presence is unnoticeable.
A further object of my invention is to provide an article or furniture or' the class described so constructed that the same may be kfolded and stored away in a very small space when not in use:
ln the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a liront elevation showing the article in a folded position.
Figure 2 is a side elevation showing same when used as a table.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of Figure 1.
Figure i is a detail view of the hinge joint serving to connect the'top ot the table with the main supporting trame, as disclosed in `lrmigure 2.
Figure 5 is a view showing the article when used as a cot.
Figure 6 is a sectional View taken on the line 6-6 of Figure l.
Figure 7 is a sectional view taken on the line 77 ot Figure 5.
Figure 8 is a liront elevation oi Figure 2.
Figure 9 is a sectional View taken on the line 9 9 of Figure 5, and
Figure l() is a detail view showing one of the side bars ot the cot having secured thereto a transverse piece of material to support the bottom oithe cot.
Referring to the accompanying drawings in detail7 wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 1 designates in general a main section which is adapted to serve as the head section of the cot connected thereto, and hereinafter described, and as the main supporting element of a table which will also hereinafter be described.
the
arrangement into which the cot, hereinafter to be described is adapted to be folded.
The members 2 have connected thereto on corresponding edge portions by the hinges e, skeleton frames 5, which are adapted to be folded or swung in a plane parallel to the :tace of the section 1 and locked together by means of a suitable locking element 6, whereby the cot within the section 1 is held in its folded position. i
Referring to Figure 2 wherein the structure is used in the form of a table, the members 5 are swung outwardly and held in such a position by a pair of hook members 7 which are pivotally connected to the inner side of each frame 5, as indicated at 8 in TFigure 8. ils Jfurther disclosedin Figure 8 it will be noted that one o1e the hook menibers 7 is provided with an eye 9 adjacent its hook portion which is adapted to receive therein the hook end of the other hook member 7, thus holding the frames 5 in their proper spaced relation. p
is further disclosed in Figure 2 the upper horizontal member 3 has connected thereto, by a double Vhinge 10, a section 11 which is adapted to lie in a horizontal position upon the upper edge of the members 2 and the frames 5 and forming in this position the top of a table.
W hen the table is not inuse the section 1l Lis swung to such a position similar to that indicated in Figure 3, and the dotted line position in Figure d, and locked in this folded position by a suitable locking member 12, such as that indicated and disclosed in Figure 3.
The cot which l will now describe consists of the main section 1, the vertical members 2 oi' which have pivotally connected thereto on their adjacent sides bars 13 which are adapted to serve as a section of the bed bottom. The end portions ot the bars 13 have connected thereto by the hinges 1&1-, the intermediate bars 15, the ends of the latter having connected thereto by hinges 16, side bars 17, the structure as a whole forming the side bars of the bed bottom. As disclosed in Figure 5 it will be noted that the hinges 14 and 16 are so positioned as t0 permit the side bars connected thereto to be rfolded in a zig-Zag relation within the main section 1.
The side bars have pivotally connected thereto, adjacent the hinges 14, a supporting leg frame 18 which is heldin a braced position by means of the hook menibers 7, previously referred to and which are disconnected when the cot is used, and
. are adapted to engagesuitable eyes 19 carried by the leg frame.
The outer end `portion of vthe bars 17 are supported by a second leg france2() which includes a horizontal bar 21, asdisclosed in Figure 7, the purpose of which will be fully apparent as the description proceeds. The leg section 20 is connected to each bar 17 by means of a curved link 22, the purpose of which is to permit the leg section to fold between the side bars 17, as disclosed in dotted lines in Figure 5.
In order to support the side bars 18 Within the main frame 1, the adjacent side portions of the members 5 have secured thereto hook members 23 into which the bars 13 are placed, as disclosed in Figure 9 of the drawings.
The end portions of the members 17 are connected by a transverse bar 24 the inner edgevof which has secured thereto, as dis closed in Figure 7, a plurality of plates 25 which project downwardly Vand against which the bar 21, of the leg frame 20, is adapted to abut, thus preventing the outward 'movement of the frame 20 which would result in the falling of the mem bers 17.
In order to support between the side bars Vpreviously referred to 'a suitable fabric for the bottom of the cot, the section 1 has extending transversely thereof a bar 26 po sitioned slightly above the pivoted ends ofv the side bars 13 and around which one end of aV fabric 27 is secured. The other end of the fabric 27 being` supported by a cross bei.' 24, previously referred to as connecting the end portions of the bars 17.
Due to the fact that when weight is placed upon the intermediate portion of the fabric 27, the same will sag down at that point and in order to prevent this I have placed under the fabric 27 `and secured to the side bars 15, a piece of fabric or the like 28 which serves to hold the main fab-ric 27 up at that point. This structure I have disclosed in Figure 10 of the drawings.
It is believed that the structure herein described is sufficient to disclose the use of the same and by referring to Figure 6 it will be seen how the various sections` of the cot are folded Within the main section 1. In order to hold these parts within the section 1 when the frames 5 are used to support the table top, I have provided upon the edge of each member 2 a pivoted button 29 which engages the side bars 17 of the cot, thus holding the saine and the other folded sections within the main section 1.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described invention willbe apparentto those skilled in the art, without further description, and it will' be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion, and minor details of construction may beresorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention'.
Having vthus fully describedV my invention, what I claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is z- Y 1. The combination of aV folding cot and table consisting of a main section into Which the cot is folded When not in use, frames pivoted to the main section and adapted to be swung at right angles thereto, a table top hinged to the upper end of said section and lying parallel to said section when not in use, and said top when moved into a horizontal planeV adapted to be supported upon the upper end of said section and said out# swung'frames. o
2. The combination of a folding cot and table consisting of a main section having a table top hinged to one side thereon and a foldingV cot pivoted to the other side thereof, frames hinged to the main section and supporting the top when in use, and said frames adapted to support one section of the cot when the same is in an extended position.
3. An article of the class describedhaving a main section to one side of which is hinged a table top and adapted to rest on said section when in use, a cot pivoted to the other side of the main section and adapted to fold therein, frames hinged to the main section and supporting said top and cot when in use, and means carried bysaid frames for holding them either in a spaced relation or in a close position. l
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee',
in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin.
JALMER JUHLIN.
