NVN/rox www j A TTO NEX? Patented Apu l5, i924.
iatAB WILLIAM F. LIEBLER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
` NAIL Application led January 16, 1923.
the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for setting nails and is particularly directed to such devices as are employed in the setting of nails in laying parquet floors and the like where it is necessary to sink the nail below the ksurface of thev wood.
One of the objects of my invention is the provision of a device wherein the nail set proper or point may be readily removed from its holder and replaced when it becomes worn out or broken.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a device of the character indicated provided with a portion for engaging the work when the nail is set to impart to the wood the final blow desirable to properly seat the wood thereby eliminating the necessity of an extra blow for the purpose.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a structure whereby the work, that is the nail being set and the set itself, is visibleat all times.
Further objects of my invention will be manifest from the following description and the accompanying drawing, in which- Fig. l is an elevational view of a device embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same; and
Fig. 3 shows a modification.
Referring to the drawings in detaiL-l designates Ya holder which is preferably knurled and is provided with a longitudinal hole 2 at one end thereof adapted to receive a point 3 which is the member or device which actually engages the nail to be set during the setting operation. This nail setting point, it will be noted, isprovided with an annular groove 4c which when the point is in position in the holder is directly opposite a threaded opening 5 in the holder. This opening is adapted to receive a set screw 6 which screw enters the groove 4 on the nail point 3 and tends to hold the point securely against its seat in the bottom of the hole 2 at all times to impart the desired rigidity to the tool as a. whole.
It will be noted that the point 3 by means Serial No. 612,932.
of this arrangement will be held rigidly in the holder when in use with the same eect as though the structure were a unitary one and that. the point may be readily removed for repair or replacement when broken or worn out.
The holderl is cut away at one side to provide a bevelled portion 7 through the surface of which extends the nail setting point 3, whereby the point and the nail being set are always in view and not obstructed by the holder whichV inconvenience is commonly encountered in devices of this nature.
`The lower end 8 of the holder presents a flat face or surface and is purposely so constructed to provide means for engaging the door or other work to give it the nal blow which is desirable to properly seat the Work as the nail is driven home. This feature is very advantageous inasmuch as at present it is necessary to give the work an eXtra blow with the hammer after the nail is set for this purpose. In the present device this ext-ra blow, of course, is eliminated.
The nail setting point 3 passes through the surface of the bevelled portion 7 and Ythe flat end 8, the point passing preferably through the juncture of 7 and 8. The point 3 is elongated and is preferably cylindrical so as to avoid making the hole in the work above the nail any larger than is necessary and also to prevent the point from becoming caught in the opening above the nail, as is sometimes the case with the ordinary nail sets as now constructed. The removal of the nail set from the head of the nail is also facilitated by the engagement of the end 8 of the holder with the wood being nailed down which causes the holder to rebound.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a modified form of the nail setting point. The front of this figure is designated` 9 and the tip is fluted as designated at 10 for the purpose of making or providing an irregular or roughened hole in the wood above the head of the nail for receiving putty or other filler, the irregularity of the hole thus formed tending to hold the filler in place.
It is to be understood that I do not wish to be limited to the precise construction as shown and described as the same may be varied within the purview of my invention.
I claim:
l. A nail set comprising a holder having a. bevelled portion adjacent its lower end and a nail setting;` point extending through the bevelled surface of said bevelled portion and renuovablvT secured in said holder.
2. A nail set comprising ay holder having a flat lower end and e cutmvaj,7 portion at one side to provide a bevelled portion adjoining said flat end, and :i nail setting point extending through the juncture of said bevelled portion and liet end.
3. A nail set comprising a bolder having :t flat bevelled face adjoining a flat end face, and a removable nail setting point extendingthrough the juncture of said faces.
