CIGAR LIGHTER.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH Donsnrr VIL- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marietta, in the county of Cobb and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Cigar Lighter, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to electrically controlled cigar lighters, the primary object of the invention being to provide a novel form of circuit completing means to cause a circuit to be completed on one movement of the operating lever, but prevent a circuit from being completed on the movement of the operating lever to its normal position.
Another object of the invention is to provide an extinguishing cap constructed to move to a position over the burner of the device simultaneously with the movement of the operating lever to its normal position. Vith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without de parting from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a cigar lighter constructed in accordance with the'present invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the same showing the cover as moved to an open position.
Figure 3 is a sectional view through the device and showing the cover as in its open position.
Figure 4 is an enlarged detail view disclosing the cover and switch mechanism, and extinguishing cap in open positions.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the reference character 5 designates the body portion of the lighter indicated at 6 and spark coil indicated at 7, are supported.
The cover indicated at 8 is hinged to the body 5 by means of the hinges 9, whereby the cover may be moved to an open or closed position to facilitate repairing of the device. Secured to the under surface of the cover 8 is a block 10 having an inclined surface to accommodate the plate 11 forming one o the contact members of the switch, and which plate is in circuit with the batteries as by in which the batteries means of the wire 12 which engages the under surface of the plate.
This arm 17 is pivotally connected by the arm 16 supported by bracket 19 which has connection with the free end of the arm 16 carrying an extinguishing cap 20 designed to move over the burner 21 of the lamp 22 to extinguish the flame. Secured to the arm 17 is a supporting plate 23 that depends therefrom and carries the pivoted contact arm 24 that carries the roller 25 designed to move over the plate 11 to complete a circuit to the spark points 26 that are in circuit therewith.
Disposed on the plate 23 is an arm 27 which has an angular portion 28 adapted to catch over the shoulder 29 of the arm 24 to hold the wheel 25 out of contact with the plate 11, on the return movement of the operating arm 14. A coiled spring 30 has connection with the arm 27 at one of its ends, the opposite end thereof having connection with the arm 24, whereby the arm 27 is normally held into engagement with the arm 24.
Disposed within the path of travel of the lugs 31 forming a part of the arm 27, is a stop 32 which causes the arm 27 to pivot in one direction to disengage the arms 24 and 27 when the plate has been moved to its normal position, setting the switch mechanism for the next operation of the device.
A coiled spring 33 is anchored to the cover 8 as at 34, the opposite end thereof, being connected to the plate 23, so that when the arm 14 is moved to cause a circuit to be completed, the coiled spring 33 is placed under tension to return the arm 14 to its normal position, when the same has been released by the operator.
The spark points 26 are in circuit with the spark coil through the wires 35, the batteries being in circuit with the spark coil as through the wires 36.
The front wall of the body portion is slotted as at 37 to accommodate the arm 14 and permit the. same to move vertically therethrough. In order that the arm 1.4 will be cushioned in its downward movement,
The primary circuit includes the wire 39 which is in circuit with one of the wires and is in circuit With the arm 24 through the plate 23, bracket members 13 and cooperating arms 15 and 16. p
The operation of the device is as follows:
The lamp 22 having been filled with a suitable liquid fuel, the lever 14 is pressed downwardly which results in a movement of the arm 24, and roller carried thereby moving over the plate 11 to complete a circuit to the spark points 26. It follows that a spark is caused directly over the wick 21 causing the same to ignite. When the arm 14 is moved to the limit of its downward movement, the member 28 engages the shoulder 29 to hold the roller 25 oil of the plate 11, whereupon the coiled spring33 operates to return the arm 14: and plate 23 to their normal positions.
As the plate 23 moves rearwardly, the lug 31 contacts with the member 32 rocking the'arm 27 to release the arm 24 and allow the same to move to a position as shown by Figure 3 of the drawings.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In a device of the character described, an operating arm, a stationary inclined contact plate, a plate movable with the operating arm and carrying a pivoted arm, a pivoted arm carrying a roller adapted to move over the contact plate to complete a circuit, the first mentioned pivoted arm adapted to engage the pivoted arm carrying the roller to hold the roller out of contact with the plate, and means for returning the roller carrying arm to its normal position.
2. In a device of the character described, a lamp, spark points supported by the lamp, a pivoted operating arm, a stationary switch member, a plate carried by the operating arm, an arm movable with the plate and having a right angled portion, a pivoted roller carrying arm mounted on the plate and having a shoulder adapted to be engaged by the right angled portion of the first mentioned arm, means within the path of travel of the plates to engage the lug and disengage the shoulder and pivoted arm associated therewith, and means for returning the operating arm to its normal po sition.
