Description

C. WAINWRIGHT BOX PLATE VALVE Filed May 13. 1922 i'm enz'ior" CimrZes Patented Apr. 8, W2 3.
sate.
CHLES WAINWRIGHT, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
BOX PLATE VALVE.
Application filed. May 13, 1922. Serial No. 560,724.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES VVAIN- WRIGHT, a citizen of the United States. residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and 6 State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Box Plate Valves, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my said invention is the 10 provision of a box plate valve in which the valve p-lates are so arranged and movable that the areas by the edges of the plates from the ports are vastly increased as compared with box plate valves extant,
thereby affording a highly efficient means for taking care of the opening and closing of the said plates.
To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement as 2 hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification Figure 1 is a diametrical section showing the box plate valve constituting the best practical embodiment of my invention of which I am ognizant, said-section taken in the plane'indicated b the line 1 -1 of and extending through igures 2 and 3.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the box plate valve.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the valve.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
85 The cage 1 of the improvement is preferably shaped in plan as illustrated in Figure 3 so as to afford a large number of valve seats 2, each with a port 3.
In furtherance of my invention, I provide 40 a plate a for each port 3, and I arrange the said plate so that it is movable throughout its area and at all points away from and toward its seat. For the retention of the late's 4 Within certain limits I provide at ower and upper confining and guide members 5 and 6, two to each plate 4. The said cut.
The guide and retaining members 5 and. 6 are so arranged as to determine the exact lift of the plates 4, and it will be noted that each of the plates 4 is adapted to lift vertically throughout its length within the limit permitted by the members 5 and 6. From this it follows that the area by the edges of each plate from its respective port 3 is increased, and at the same time no undue strain whatever is placed on any portion of any one of the plates 4.
In addition to the practical advantages ascribed to my novel box plate valve, it will be noted that the same is simple and compact in construction and as a unit is well adapted to withstand the usage to which box plate valves are ordinaril subjected.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
The combination in a valve, of a cage having a seat and a port extending to said seat, a valve plate movable bodily toward and from said seat to control said port, means carried by the cage to guide the end portions of the valve plate and to retain the same in Working relation to the cage, and a spring carried by one of said means and backing the valve plate.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
CHARLES WAINWRIGHT.
