T. m. SAURMAN. Drying Apparatus for Ph otographib Plates.
N0,.148,990, Y Patented March 24,1874.

UNITED STATES FFICE.
THOMAS M. SAURMAN, or NORRISTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN DRYING APPARATUS FOR PHOTOGRAPHIC PLATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,990, dated March 24, 1874; application filed June 16, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS M. SAURMAN, of Norristown, Montgomery county, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a Drying Apparatus for Photographic Plates, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to readily and safely dry photographic plates, such as negatives, tin-types, 850., by means of a box, A, through which steam is caused to circulate, and which is supported in an inclined position on a stand or bracket, B, as shown in the per spective view, Figure 1, and vertical section, Fig. 2, of the accompanying drawing, the photographic plate D being placed against the inclined face of the Said box, and resting with its lower edge on a ledge, a, which is riveted or otherwise secured to the said face. The box A is made, by preference, of sheet metal, and is perfectly steamtight, steam from any adjacent generatorbeingintroduced through a tube, 1), and being permitted to escape through a tube, d, and both tubes being provided with suitable cocks, so as to regulate the introduction and escape of steam. By this circulation of steam through the box the latter is maintained at a temperature sufliciently high to rapidly dry any ph otographic plate which may be placed against the inclined face of the box, the temperature never being high enough to injure the plate.
In the present instance the box A is secured to the top of a movable stand, D, the tubes for the introduction of steam to, and its escape from, the box being flexible; but the box may ,be permanently Secured to any bracket or other support in a position most convenient for the photographer.
The box may also be made double or of a triangular shape, so as to present two opposite inclined faces, each provided with ledges a, whereon to dry photographic plates.
The water of condensation may be drawn on from the box from time to time through a tube, 6.
The ledge a may be broken, or may consist of a series of pins, instead of being continuous.
I claim as my invention The drying-box A, consisting of a steam chamber provided with suitable induction and eduotion pipes Z) d c, and having a ledge or ledges, a, arranged on the outside of such chamber, for holding the plates to be dried, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this Specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
