IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR-PLANING WHEELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,988, dated March 24, 1874; application filed September 15,1873.
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN L. SANDERS, of Auburn, in the county of San gamen and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Planing VagOn-Wheels 5 and do hereby declare th at the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specilication.
The nature of my invention relates to an improvement in machines for planing wagonwheels; and it consists in the arrangement and combination of part-s, which will be more fully described hereafter, whereby the edge and sides of the fellies can be rapidly and smoothly dressed.
Figure l is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a section of the planer-frame, taken on the line :c Fig. 1.
c represents a suitable standard, upon which the driving-wheel b is jonrnaled, which transmits motion through the belt c to the pulley d journaled on the frame e. Upon the shaft g, on which the pulley is secured, is also secured the balance-wheel i, which is secured to its hub j by inclined spokes, and which serves as a brace to steady and support the wheel while being planed, the wheel being clamped against the balance-wheel by means of a nut, k, screwed on the end of the shaft g. The table Z, upon which. the planers are secured, is supported in the socket m, which allows the table to be adjusted up and down, so as to suit different-sized wheels. This socket is secured to the slotted base-plate o, which can be adjusted back and forth, so as to move nearer to or farther from the Wheel, at pleasure. Upon the top ofthe table Z are made dovetail grooves, in which the slide l is moved back and forth by the screw 2. Secured to the top of the slide are the three movable standards 4, having an opening through their side, in which the slotted planers 3 are held by a setscrew, in the inclined position shown in Fig. 3. The
ytwo planers placed in the two side standards have their outer corners beveled away, so as to correspond to the bevel on the front of the standards, as shown in Fig. 2, by which means the sides, of the wheel are trimmed away as it advances in between the standards, the edge of the wheel being trimmed last as it reaches the planer in the standard placed at right angles to it. Not only are the planers made adjustable back and forth by means of the slots and set-screws but the standards themselves are secured to the slide by means of the slotted plates 5, so as to be readily adjusted, and and thusv wheels of all thicknesses can be planed equally well. The screw 2 passes through the top of the slotted slide 6, which travels in ways formed upon the back of the standard 7, the slide being made adjustable up and down, so that the screw can be moved with the table as it is adjusted. The standard 7 is secured to a slotted base-plate, 8, upon the top of the base-plate o, so that the screw can be adjusted to the distance which it is desired to feed the table forward.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is`
l. The adjustable standards 4L with slotted plates 5, carrying the slotted planers 3 and secured to the slide 1, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the table l, socket m, plate o, adjustable standard 7 8, slide 6, screw 2, and slide l provided with suitable planing devices, all being arranged to operate substantially as shown and described.
