To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN FREDERICK SGHLAPPI, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Sioux City, in the county of Woodbury and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furnaces, of which the following is a specification. t
This invention relates to furnaces particularly of the type employed for heating houses and like purposes.
An object of the invention is to provide a device by which the air drawn over the fuel bed of a furnace of the type specified may be previously heated and thus obtain the highest possible degree of combustion of the fuel.
It is also an object of the invention that the air heating device be adapted to introduce the heated air immediately over the bed of fuel in the fire box or furnace and thuls again increase the combustion of the fue Other objects and objects relating to details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts will hereinafter appear.
The invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in whic Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating a furnace with the air heating attachment of the present invention applied to the feed door communicating with the ire box thereof.
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the feed door and associated air heating device of the present invention.
Figure 3 is an inner face view of the heating device.
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially on the line 4 4 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings more particularly B indicates generally a base portion of a furnace'including the fire box and ash box and T the top portion thereof which is formed in hot air compartments communicating with pipes P which are extended to different rooms. The present furnace is of the so-called hot air type of furnace and is provided with the usual door B which closes an opening communicating with the ash box of the furnace, said door carrying the usual smaller door D which in turn is fitted with the usual slide S. Above the door D is positioned what may be termed the feed door as indicated at F, said door in the present indoor panel 10 there is positioned a casting C i and a similar casting C is positioned upon the rear face of said panel. Each casting is in the shape of a cap comprising a head portion 12 and a marginal iiange 18. The head 12 of the casting C is formed with a nipple 14 which provides an inlet passage to the interior of said casting. The nipple 14 has a downwardly extending portion 14 which has secured over its free end a screen wire 15. formed with a plurality of openings 16, an opening being preferably positioned at each corner of the head as shown in Figure 4.
Upon the head portion 12 of the casting C there is fitted a cap K which Ais similar in shape to the castings C and C comprising a head portion 17 which is provided with a marginal flange 18.
The cap K and the castings C and C are secured to the door F by means of bolts 19, said bolts extending through the heads of each of the Vcastings C and C and cap K as illustrated in Figure 2.
The cap K has its head portion 17 formed with a nipple 19 which is interiorly threaded and adapted to receive one end of a coupling member 20. The coupling member 20 is tubular as shown and exteriorly threaded its entire length and upon its other end there is threaded an L-shaped coupling member generally indicated by the reference numeral 21. The L-shaped coupling member 21 has in turn threaded in its outer end a tubular coupling member 22 similar to the member 20 and said member 22 is threaded in the one leg of the U-shaped pipe fitting 23. The U-shaped pipe fitting 23 has threaded in the end of its other leg portion a coupling member 24 which in turn is threaded to a second L-shaped tubular member 25. The member 25 terminates at its outer end in a nozzle 26, said nozzle having its free end terminating in an elongated slot as at 27 through which air may be ejected.
In the operation of the present device `the air is drawn through the nipple 14 of the casting C as indicated by the arrows 28. Upon entering the interior of the casting C the air proceeds through the open- The casting C has its head 12V ings ll in the door F and from thence through the openings 16 of the casting C. The air now is drawn through the tubular coupling 2O and proceeds through the different fittings and through the nozzle y:26. lVhile the air is passing through the castings C and C and cap K the same receives a preliminary heating and when ejected through the nozzle 26 upon the fuel bed it. will tend to cause a highly efficient combustion of the fuel. Also it should be noted that the different couplings connecting the nozzle 26 with the cap K are so arranged that the end of the nozzle may be lowered or raised. rIbis feature is particularly im portantin that it permits y'the nozzle to always be brought so that the saine Will eject the air immediately over the fuel bed Within the furnace. lf a small fire is desired then the nozzle 26 should be adjusted with respect to the fuel bed so that the air is ejected above the fuel bed. lf a heavier lire is desired then the nozzle should be adj usted so that the air ejected therefrom will occur immediately over and close to the fuel bed.
Although I have herein shown and described only one form of device embodying iny invention, it is to be understood that various changes and modifications may be nesaeae made herein Without departing from the spirit of the invention or the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
What claim is:
ln a furnace, a door serving as a closure to the fire box of the furnace, a pair of cup shaped castings, one of which has its free edge positioned against the inner side of the furnace door and the other casting arranged upon the last named casting in such a manner whereby to provide a pair of chambers or compartments upon the inner side of the furnace door, a third cup shaped casting arranged upon the outer side of the furnace door whereby to provide a third chamber or cory irtinent, a nipple carried by the third casting centrally of the bottom thereof, said furnace door having openings in substantial alignment with said nipple and the bottoni of casting occurring immediately upon the inner` side of the door having openings adjacent the side Walls thereof, bolts extending through each of the castings and the door whereby the castings may be secured in position7 and a nozzle carried f by the innermost casting upon the door adapted to introduce air passing through said cast-ing into the fire box of said furnace.
