` ROLLING FILE-BLANKS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 14,897, dated May 13, 1856.
T 0 aZZ whom t may concern Be it kno-wn that I, J AMES N. ASPINWALL, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Machine for Forming File- Blanks and other Articles of Similar Taper or Curved F orm; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1, is a vertical central section of my improvement, m, Fig. 2, showing the plane of section. Fig. 2, is a front view of the working parts of the same, the framing being bisected vertically.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
My invention consists in the employment or use of two rollers provided with eccentric grooves, the upper roller having two `Inotions, a rotary and a vibratory motio-n toward and from the lower roller and arranged as will be presently shown and described.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A, B, represent two rollers which may be constructed of steel or chilled cast iron. The lower roller B, has its axis fitted in permanent bearings a, a, which are placed in uprights b, b, attached t0 a proper base C. The upper roller A, has its axis fitted in bearings c, which are allowed to slide in the uprights Z2, Z). These bearings c, rest upon spiral springs (Z, in the uprights and screws e; e, which pass vertically through the upper parts of the uprights, bear upon the bearings c, see Fig. 2. It will be seen that if the screws e, e, be screwed down, the upper roller A, will be depressed or forced toward the lower roller and if the screws be screwed upward, the roller A, will be raised by the springs cZ.
To one end of the axis of the lower roller B, there is attached a toothed wheel D into which a pinion E, gears, said pinion being on a driving shaft F. The opposite end of the axis of the lower roller has a pinion G upon it, which pinion gears into a corresponding pinion H, on the axis of the upper roller A. To this axis and adjoining the pinion I-I, there is attached a cam I, which acts against an upright pin J, the upper end of which is attached to a slide K, which is placed upon the uprights The slide K has a transverse slot f,.at its center, in which slot the lower end of a pin g, fits. The upper end of this pin is attached to a bar L, the ends of which are pivoted to levers h, h, which are attached to the upper ends of the screws, e, e, one to each.
The cam I, is formed of a cylinder 2', having a flanch j, at each end to which horizontal plates Z0, are attached, the plates being curved concentric with the periphery of the cylinder z', and having their outer or face edges beveled in reverse directions.
The rollers A, B, are grooved circumferentially and eccentrically, as shown in Fig. 1, Z, representing the grooves. These grooves are made of different forms corresponding to the desired form intended to be given to the blank. The different formed grooves may also be made in one pair of rollers, see Fig. 2, in which Z, represents grooves for a round file blank, Z for a flat blank, Z for a triangular or three cornered blank and so on.
Underneath the lower roller B, there are placed two steps M, M, formed of horizontal bars hooked or bent upward at one end as shown in Fig. 1, the hooked ends being in line with the space between the rollers or with their point of contact. The stops work through guide plates m, and have catches n, upon them.
The operation is as follows. The bar from which the blanks are formed is properly heated, and the stops M, M, are adjusted so that their hooked ends will be at the proper distance from the rollers A, B; the bar is then placed between the proper groove Z, the end of the bar being in contact with the stop which is in line with the groove in which the bar is placed. The stop determines the proper length or portion of the bar which is to be acted upon at once; a continuous motion being then given the rollers, which rotate in the direction indicated by the arrows, the bar will be acted upon and forced o-utward between the rollers, the eccentric grooves compressing a portion of the bar in proper shape on two sides; the two opposite sides are then inserted between grooves corresponding to it in thickness and the bar will be then compressed in proper form in two directions, see Fig. 2, in which a flat ile blank is shown in red, Z reprethe blanks however require to be of slightly curved or rounded form and this form is given by the slide K, operated by the cam l; the slide K actuates the levers L, L, and screws e, e, and a vertical vibratory'motion is communicated thereby to the upper roller A, and the blanks will consequently be of curved or rounded form.
The above machine has been practically tested and operates well; it is simple in construction, not expensive to manufacture, nor liable to get out of repair. 1
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The use of the rollers, A, B, as described for forming file blanks, when said rollers are operated and adjusted by the slide, K, cam, I, and springs, (d), as set forth.
