JOSEPH BIRBAUM, OF XVEST ALLIS, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR TO MILWAUKEE STAMP- ING CO., OF -WEST ALLIS, WISCONSIN, A. CORPORATON OF WISCONSIN.
SUPPORT FOR GARMENT HANGERS.
Application filed November 28, 1921. Serial No. 518,285.
To ZZ whom t may conce-11n.:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH BIRBAUM, a citizen of the United States, and resident of lNest Allis, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Visccnsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Supports for Garment Hangers, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in supports for garment hangers and particularly to supports built into wardrobe trunks for supporting garment hangers of the type which engages the supporting means at two points.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a novel support for garment hangers which will be simple in construction, light in weight, strong and rigid, and inexpensive to manufacture.
A more specific object of the invention is to provide a pair of supporting members of inverted U- hape in cross section and adapted to be fixed to a wardrobe trunk in any desired manner in combination with members adapted respective fixed members which slidable members are also of U-shape in cross section and are provided with horizontal flanges adapted to engage the bottom edges of the sides of said fixe members, whereby said slidable members are maintained in proper relation to said fixed member a.
A further object of the invention is to provide novel means to limit movement of the sliding or extensible members relative to the fixed supporting members.
The invention consists in the novel constructions, arrangements and devices to be hereinafter described and claimed for carrying out the above stated objects and such other objects as will appear from the follow-- ing description of bodiment illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Fig. 1 is a sectional View on a horizontal plane through the bottom portion of a wardrobe trunk equipped with garment supporting means embodying the principles of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1, the extensible support for the garment hangers, however, being shown in extended position; and
to slide freely over saidk a certain preferred em-k Figs. 3 and 4 are sectional views, on an enlarged scale, taken on the lines 3-3 and 4 4, respectively, of Fig. 2.V
Like characters of reference parts in the several views.
Referring now to the drawings, the invention is illustrated in connection with a wardrobe trunk placed on end and comprising a bottom portion 7 and a top portion 8 hinged thereto, said bottom portion including a bottom member 9 aufl "irl-e YYiembers 10.
rFhe supporting means for the garment hangers comprises, in the embodiment herein shown, apair of inverted U-shaped horizontally extending members 11 which are riveted or otherwise secured at their rear ends to plates 12, respectively, said plates being secured to the bottom of the trunk by suitable fastening members 13. The menibers 11 are supported at their front ends by brackets 14: secured to the side portions 10 of the trunk by fastening members 15, said brackets extending away from the respective side portions of the trunk and upwardly into engagement with the under side of the members 11, the members 11 being rigidly secured to said brackets by fastening members 16.
Tubular members 17 also of inverted U- shape in cross section freely slide over the designate lilfe respective members 11, said members 17 hav-` ing horizontal flanges 17 a which co-operate with the ybottom edges of the side portions of the respective members 11 to maintain the members 17 in proper relation to the respective members 11. The inner vertical edges of the fiange portions 17a of said sliding members are spaced so as to provide a slot 18 to receive the upstanding portions of the brackets 1&1 so that the members 17 may freely slide relative to the members 11.
In order to limit outward movement of the members 17 relative to the members 11, said members are provided with co-opera-ting stops. inthe embodiment herein shown, one of the flange portions 17a on each of the members 17 is provided with an upwardly extending tongue 19V which is adapted to strike against an inwardly extending lip portion 2O struck from the side of the member 11. It will be noted that the stop lugs lie wholly within the fixed and slidable members with no portions thereof extending outside of the said members so that they in nowise interfere with the garment hangers which may be supported upon said members.
From the foregoing description it Will be apparent that the supporting members 11 and the slidable members 17 may be made from sheet metal Which need not be of very heavy gauge and Which, because of their cross sectional formation, nevertheless will be rigid and strong. rlhe construction, therefore, is Well adapted for the purpose and inexpensive to manufacture. The inner ends of the members 17 are provided With sloping surfaces 21 so that sharp corners will be eliminated and there Will be substantially no interference with the free sliding of the transversely7 extending garment hangers 22. The outer ends of the members 17 may be provided With disks 23 which may be secured thereto in any desired manner and which serve as convenient linger gripping means to manipulate the sliding member 17.
I claim:
The combination With a trunk, of a pair of spaced supporting members of inverted U-Kshape in cross section, the inner ends of said members beingk fixed to said trunk,
brackets carried by said trunk adjacent the outer end of said respective members and having upwardly extending portions adapted to project between the side of said members, members also of inverted U-shape in cross section and which are slidable over said respective supporting members, the entire outer perimetral surface of said sup porting mem-bers being in sliding engagement with the inner surface of said slidable members, said Slidable members having horizontal flanges adapted to co-operate with the bottom edges of the side portions of said respective fixed members to maintain said members in proper relation, and co-operating struck out. internal tongues projecting inwardly from the sides of said fixed mem bers,` and upwardly from the bottom of said slidable members adapted to limit movement of said slidable members relative to said fixed members, respectively, the tongues of both pairs of members being resilient to permit of the ready assembly of the parts.
In testimony whereof, I aiiix my signature.
JOSEPH BIRBAUM.
