OIL CUP FOR TIMERS.
Application filed January 24, 1920. Serial No. 353,797.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RAYMOND J. TRAUP- MANN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and Y State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Oil Cups for Timers, of which the following is a description, reference being bad to the accompanyin drawings, which are a part of this speci cation.
The invention relates to oil cups for timers.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple and effective oil cup built into the 16 timer in which the cover is held in either closed or open position by a flat leaf spring.
The invention further consists in the several features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.
In the drawings: Fig. 1 is a plan View of timer provided with an oil cup embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a side view of the timer, partly in section; Fig. 3 is a view 26 similar to Fig. 1 showing a slightly modified form of connection between the spring and cover of the oil oup'; Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2, partly in section to show the modified form of construction. a
In the drawings, the numeral 5 desi ates the housing or cover'of the timer, 6 t e insulating ring in which the fixed contacts (not shown) connected to the terminal ports 7 are mounted, all of which is of usual construction. A bracket 8 of usual construction is riveted to the cover 5 and carries a bearing member 9 to which a rod (not shown) is usually connected to shift the cover to vary the timing.
The portion 10 of the bracket lying flush with the cover 5 has an opening 11 therein alined with an opening 12 in the cover. A short duct or tube 13 passes through these openings and has a tight fit with the cover. The upper end of this tube projects above the bracket and is normally closed by a cover 14 which cover is held in this position or in open position by a fiat leaf spring 15 connected at one end to the bracket and at its other end to the cover; The connection of the spring with the bracket is formed in each instance by providing an opening in the spring through which the reduced end 16 of the member 9 is passed, the spring being then clamped between the shoulder 17 on the member and the bracket when the bearing member is riveted to the arm.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 the connection between the spring 15 and the cover 14: is formed'by a tongue 18 on the cover having a. slot 19 therein to receive the bent end 20 of the spring 15 to form a loose pivot connection. The tongue 18 extends downwardly from the cover and its end 21 rests upon the bracket and is held in engagement therewith by the spring in either its open or closed position. The end 21 of the cover forms a movable fulcrum which is free to slide on its support while turning with respect to the spring. When the. cover reaches the position in which the tongue is at or more than right angle with respect to its support the cover is held in open position as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. When the cover is moved from its open position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, the spring then acts to swing it downwardly sothat it may engage the tube.
Referring to Figs 3 and 4, the connection between the spring15 and the cover 14 is formed by a tongue 22 On the cover having depending cars 23 provided with. apertures 24 to receive projections 25 formed on the spring to form a loose pivot connection. The cars of the tongue extend downwardly from the cover and their ends rest upon the bracket and are held in engagement therewith by the spring in either open or closed position. The ends of the ears on the cover form a movable fulcrum which is free to slide on its support while turning with respect to the spring when the cover is moved to or beyond the dotted line. position shown in Fig. 4. hen the cover is moved from its open position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4 the spring acts to swing it downwardly so that it may engage the tube.
In both of the above constructions it will be noted that the cover with its tongue forms a. lever fulcrumed at the end of the tongue upon the cover and having the spring load applied intermediate its ends, the fulcrum, silding on its support during opening and closing of the cover.
WVha-t I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a timer, the combination, with a housing having an oil duct therein, a bracket secured to the housing and a bearing memher secured to the bracket, of a fiat spring clamped at one end between said member and bracket, a cover for said duct, and a connection between the other end of the spring and the cover whereby the spring serves to hold the cover in either open or closed position.
2. In a timer, the combination, with the housing provided with an oil duct, of a cover for closing said duct provided with a tongue having its free end swingingly and slidably engageable with a part of the hous ing, a fiatspring for holding said end of the tongue in engagement with the housing and loosely connected with the tongue to hold the cover in either open or closed position, and means for securing the spring to the housing.
3. In a timer, the combination with the housing provided with an oil duct, of a cover for closing said duct provided with a tongue swingingly engageable on one end with a part of the housing, said tongue being provided with an opening, a flat spring connected to the housing and having a part loosely mounted in the opening and engageable with the tongue to hold the cover in either open or closed position.

In a timer, the combination with a housing having an oil duct therein, of a cover for closing said duct and provided with an extension forming a movable end fulcrum, and a flat spring connected to the housing and connected to the cover on the same side of the extension as the main body portion of the cover to hold said cover in either open or closed position.
5. In a timer, the combination, with a housing having an oil duct therein, of a cover for said duct provided with a tongue havin an end fulcrumed on the housing and and a slot near its end, and a flat spring having one end secured to the housing and its other end extending over and disposed within the slot in engagement with the tongue, said spring serving to hold said. cover in open or closed position.
6. In av timer, the combination, withthe housing having an oil ducttherein, an arm secured to the housing, and a bearing member secured to the arm, of a fiat spring clamped at one end between said arm and member, a cover for said ducthaving one end fulcrumed to turn about said housing, and a connection between the other end of the spring and the cover above its fulcrum point, said spring serving to hold the cover in either open or closed position.
7. In a timer, the combination, with the housing provided with an oil duct, of a 1 ssam cover for closing said duct provided with a tongue swingingly engageable at its free end with a part of the housing, a flat spring for holding said end of the tongue in engagement with the housing and the cover in place in either open or closed position, and means securing the spring to the housing. 7
8. The combination with a housing having an oil duct, a bracket secured to the housing and a. bearing member secured to the bracket, of a spring secured between said member and bracket, a cover for said duct, and a connection between said spring and cover whereby the spring serves to hold the cover in either open or closed position.
9. In a timer, the combination with a housing provided with an aperture, of a flange extending outwardly around said aperture to form an oil duct, and a flanged sealing cover adapted to register over and about the end of said oil duct.
10. In a timer, the combination of a housing having an aperture forming an oil duct, of a flanged sealin cover for closing said oil duct, said cover aving an extended portion thereof inclined with respect to the sealing portion of the cover and provided with a transverse slot.
11. In a timer, the combination of ahousing provided with an oil duct, of an arm member secured to the housing and provided with an opening, a bearing member secured to the arm member in register with said opening, an apertured spring secured in register between said arm member and said bearing member, 'a cover for the oil duct, means termed at the opposite end of said spring for rockablv journalling thereunder the terminal portion of said cover, said terminal portion being provided with a transverse slot for receiving the end of said spring.
12. In a timer, the combination of a housing provided with a lubricating aperture, of a cover adapted to seal said lubricating aperture, a spring pressing on said cover, said cover adapted to rock upon a surface under the pressure of said sprin and said spring maintaining an open or c osed position of said cover when said cover is rocked beyond a plane normal to said surface and passing through the point of contact of said spring and said cover.
