Description

April 8, 1924. D. F. DOWNES HOOD LOCK Filed April 12 1920 Patented Apr. 8, 1924.
DENIS F. DOWNES, 0F GOBURG, NEAR MELBOURNE, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA.
HOOD LOCK.
Application filed April 12, 1920. Serial No. 373,292.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DENIS FRANCIS DoWNEs, a subject ofthe King of Great .Britain, residing at 31 Coburg Street, Goburg, near Melbourne, in the State of Victoria, Commonwealth of Australia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hood Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved bonnet lock for securing motor-cars and like vehicles against unauthorized use and interference.
The facility with which motor-cars can be started and rapidly driven away renders them extremely liable to be stolen, even from stations in city streets and in broad daylight. Furthermore, many improvements in the construction of motor-cars make possible the rapid dissembling of component or attached parts, such for example as the magneto. The loss by theft of such vital parts of the mechanism as are costly,-
saleable and readily removable is of common occurrence.
Locks have been applied as a preventative measure to the switches of motor-cars, but the protection afforded is not of great value as an intending thief with a knowledge of motor-ear work can simply lift the bonnet and re-wire the car so as to remove the locked switch from the circuit.
According to the present invention a spring actuated bolt is mounted on the inner side of the bonnet lid of the vehicle while a hasp mounted on the bonnet board of said vehicle is adapted to be engaged automatically by the spring bolt when the bonnet is in the closed position, a pinand barrel lock being provided for operating mechanism for the disengagement of the spring bolt from the hasp. In order to disengage the spring bolt from the hasp an arm is secured to the rotatable member of the lock and engages with the spring bolt. The spring bolt is mounted in a frame secured to the inner side of the bonnet, this frame being provided with guide walls for the reception of the hasp to prevent endwise movement of the bonnet lid. The spring bolt is prevented from turning in the frame and is provided with a bevelled end adapted to cooperate with the rounded end of the hasp which is provided with a bevelled corner to facilitate its entry between the guide walls in the frame.
The spring bolt pin and barrel lock and the bolt disengaging mechanism are enclosed in the frame by a cover clamped between the bonnet and the frame.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood reference is made to the accompanying explanatory drawings wherein:
Figures 1, 2 and 3 are perspective views illustrating the application of the improved security device to the bonnet of a motor-car.
Figures 4,5, 6, 7 and 8 illustrate in perspective componet parts of the security device shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3.
Figures 9 and 10 are views in front elevation and in plan, respectively, of the locking device with the cover removed for the purpose of clearness in illustration.
, In the drawings the numeral 14 designates the hingedly attached bonnet lid of a motor-car, and 15 and 16 indicate the bonnet board and dashboard, respectively, of the vehicle.
To the'bonnet board 15 and inside the fall line 17 of said bonnet lid 14 there is securely fastened a hasp 18. This hasp is preferably formed, as is shown in Figure 8, from a piece of strip metal, which is bent double at 19 and flanged outwardly at both ends 20.
A bolt hole 21 and anentrance incline 22 are furnished in said hasp 18 and the bend 19 may be reinforced by rivets 23, if so required. The top 19 of said bent portion 19 is rounded and one corner 19 is bevelled.
A look frame 24 is secured as by blindriveting 25 to the inner side of said bonnet lid 14 and in alignment with the hasp 18. This'lock frame 24 has attachment flanges 26, a hasp-slot 27 and bolt guiding walls 28 and 29. In said walls 28 and 29 there are formed bolt holes 30 which, when the bon net lid is closed, are in alignment with said bolt hole 21in the hasp.
Formed in the rear wall 31 of said lock frame 24 is a longitudinal slot 32. A bolt 33 is slidably mounted in said bolt-holes and has a guide pin 34 which slides in said slot 32 and functions to prevent angular movement of said bolt 33.
A coil spring is mounted on the bolt 33 and exerts pressure on said guide pin 34 tending to force said bolt in one direction as far as the dimensions of the slot 32 will,
permit. The end 37 of said bolt is cham fered on the underside as indicated by 38,,
in Figure 7.
An operating mechanismv 39-is mountedin said lock frame 24, and has a member 40 which is adapted to be partially-rotated1 by a key 41 or thelike. To thismember;40 there is attached an arm 42 designed to contact with said guide pin 34 and thereby impart rectilinear motion'to the bolt 33;; In a preferred construction and as illustrated in the drawings, said operating mechanism 39- is a standardcpin and-barrel lock unit adapted to be operated by fluted; and serrated keys.
A cover 43 is detachably fitted on the ,inside of the frame 24 insuch mannerthat said frame mustbe removed from. thebonnet. lid 14 before saidcovercan be detached and the operating mechanism39 and bolt 33 disclosed. Said-cover43fhas a hole 44 corresponding with a key aperture. 44 formed in the bonnet lid 14 and a pivotally attached lid 44 covers said aperture.
The action ofthe device is automaticand engagement of thebolt.33 andthe hasp 18- follows upon the fall of'the bonnet lid 14 onto the bonnet board 15-.
When said bonnet lid 15 is lowered tothe position shown in Figure 13,- the hasp 18' enters the hasp-slot 27,beingguided; into;
the same by the bevelled corner 19 -and the rounded top construction 19 1 4 The 'chamfered end 37 of the bolt 33 con tacts with the incline 22 of the hasp 18 and is thrust rearwardly in the, bolt hole 30 until it no longer impedes-the descent of the bonnet "lid 14.
When said bolt is opposite to the-ho le-2l in said hasp 18, it is forced throughthe same by the action of the coil spring-35. The
lock frame 24and the hasp-18arethereby= engaged and the bonnet lid 14'and the bon-f net board 15, to which they are, respectively, attached are thereby securely locked together. The constructionof the lock frame 24 embodying the hasp-slot 27 ensures arigid connection between said bonnet- 100k and said bonnet board and prevents-excessive endwise movement of the former."
In order to release the bolt 33 from the hole 21 in the hasp 18, it is necessary for a key fluted and serrated to fit thepin combination of the operating mechanism -39 to be inserted in the same and turned, where upon the arm 42 contacts with the pin 34 and retracts said bolt 33.
What I do claim is 1. Means for securing motor-cars and the like vehicles against unauthorized use and interference comprising, a lock casing attached to the inner side of the bonnet lid of said vehicle, a spring actuated latch bolt movable in said lock casing, a pin and barrel loclrmechanism mounted in said casing, a rotatable member in said lock, an arm secured to said rotatable member and adapted to engage said latch bolt, and a hasp on the bonnet board ofsaid-vehicle, and havingan aperture adapted to receivesaid latch bolt.
