Description

SAMUEL J. CHAPMAN, OF BALTIMORE MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN WATER-Cometas.'
Specication formirg part of Letters Patent No. 148,928, dated March 24, i874; application liled March 5, 1874.
To all 107mm it may concern:
Beit known that I, SAMUEL J. CHAPMAN, of the city of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain Improvements in lVater-Coolers, of which the following is a specification and I do hereby declare that iu the same is contained a full, clear, and exact description of my said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to certain improvements in Water-coolers tending to keep the ice, which is in a receptacle separate from that containing the Water, clear also of air, thereby lessening the draft upon the ice, and rendering the cooler proportionately the more effective and economical.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part'of this specification, a vertical section of my improved cooler is represented.
A is the outer body or Water-chamber of the cooler, constructed in and of any of the approved methods aud materials in use, and having a cover, A. Suspended Within the outer body A, at or near its top, lis an ice box or reservoir, B, made of earthenware or other suitable substance, having a pipe, Bf, extending a short distance from its bottom, and then returning a short height upward, as shown,
the bottom of the reservoir being slightly inclined toward the central pipe B. The ice box or reservoir is provided with anairtight cover, C, resting upon the annular projection c. The heat in the Water in the receptacle A is gradually absorbed by the surfaces ofthe icereceptacle B, the Waste of the ice being almost entirely consequent upon the dra-ft thus made upon it, for the retlnn-pipe B', constantly overlowing with the Waste-Water from the ice, carrying with it the cooler air to the bottom ot' the cooler, in time causes the ice to be left in meno, or partially so, and to a great extent freed from the wasting iniiuence ot atmospheric air. The cooled water is drawn oli' at the cock E.
I claim as my invention- The combination of the Water-receptacle A and cover A with the ice-receptacle B, having the return-pipe B and-air-tight lid c, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In Atestimony whereof I have hereto subscribed my name, in the city of Charleston, South Carolina, this 10th day of February, in the year of our Lord 1874. r
SAMUEL J. GIL-APMAN. lVitnesses JOHN BARRY, F. W. BOLGER.
