Description

Patented Apr. 8, 1924.
oli-Free.
Gusrav scHUL'r z; or-mnwnuxm: WISQQNSIN- noon, Emsunni To aZZwkOm it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUsrAv SoHULrz,` a citizen ofthe United States, and resident ofv Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee The primary object ofthe invention is to. provide a simple andefiificient device of the above character,'ad`aptab'le to any forniA of swinginggdoo-r, such'as, garage doors, and' Which is' provided with yieldable means to prevent strain or jar upon the door, resultswung to its opened position.
A further object resides in the specific method of latching and releasing the lock, whereby a durable structure is obtained, which is not subject to damage resulting from severe usage to which these devices are put.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter described and more particularly defined by the appended claims, it being understood that such changes in the precise embodiment of the herein disclosed invention may be made as come within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawing, I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of the present invention constructed according to the best mode I have so far devised forthe practical application of the principles thereof, and in which: i o
Figure 1 is a Sectional view through the casing of a door, illustrating the door in its opened position and showing the invention attached thereto, parts of the latter being broken vaway to more clearly illustrate the structural features.
Figure 2 is an elevational plan View of a door with the invention attached thereto, the casing being shown in section, and
This invention pert'a'ins to door fixtures' ing from asudden stop when the door is Figurefis an enlarged detailed' view o fthe latch mechanism".` i' v' i VReferring nowA moreV particularly to the accompanyingf drawing, the door casing is designated'byithe numeral 1- and hashinged thereto'th'ef door '2, to wl'ic'rl` is attached a bracketf 3:* Loosel'y pivoted on the, bracket for horizontal movement and,- slight vertical rnovienfent'l i'sfa latch rod* 4 provided 'on its *under side* with a notch 5 adaptedftobe engaged by the notched plate 6, through which thejrodf'travels, and i nlorder to prevent thejlatcl'rodj et from sliding out ofthe latch plate as-the'r door is; swunglopengthe rod" is;provi`ded', at its lend, with a pin 27:
For the purpose off cushioning the door ajit' lfeefheeitiXfirsmeOliel' POt'OIl 'and thereby preventing a* strair`1'` or? on* the same, the latch plate 6 is slidably secured to an attaching plate l8 secured to the top of the casing 1. Disposed between the latch plate and attachingplate is a coil spring 9 guided by the pin 10 passing through the downwardly extending ears carried by both latch members.
From the foregoing, it is obvious that as the door 2 is swung open, the latch plate 6 will be engaged either by the notch 5 in the latch rod, or by the pin 7, and the force of the door will be cushioned or absorbed by the spring 9, thus preventing a sudden stop or jar which 'often results' from strain on the hinges of a door, as well as damage to the door lights.
The pin ll, which serves as the pivot for V the latch rod 4, is provided with a depending yoke 11', in which is pivoted a lever 12,'one end of which is attachedV to the latch rod-l by means of a bolt 13, while the other end is provided with a suitable chain or cable 14:, ,for actuating the lever. Vvhen the door is in its opened position, as illustrated in Figure 1, and it is desired to release the lock, the chain 14 is pulled downwardly and through the lever 12 the latch rod will beI raised to disengage the notch 5 from the latch plate 6 and permit the door to be swung inwardly.
As previously stated, the latch rod 4 has directed to the fact that the means, for relieving the latch rod 4 to disengage it from the latch plate, is rigid with the pivoted end ofthe latch rod instead of being attached to the latch plate, asin most devices on the market at the present time. This insures a more durable structure and enables the latch rod tol-be Vpivoted on the door instead of the casing, While the latch plate is secured to the casing. rangement is very desirable, in that it 'permits attachment to the casing at a greater distance from .the sidev of the casing than Where the arrangement is reversed.
Vl. A locking device 'adapted to be attached to a swinging door and casing and comprising aV bracket,`a latch rod pivoted on said bracket and provided With a locking notch, a yieldablelatchplate adapted to engage said notch and cushion the door, and means for disengaging the rod from said plate.
2. A locking device adapted to be attached to a swinging door and casing and conprising a bracket mounted on said door, a latch'rod pivoted onsaid bracket and provided with a locking notch, a yieldable latch plate secured to said casing and adapted to engage said notchl and cushion the This ar- I door, and means adjacent the pivoted end of :the latch rod for raising and disengagingv the same from the latch plate; i
3. A locking device adapted to bev attached to a swingng door and casing and comprising a bracket, a latch rod horizontally and vertioally ,pivoted on said bracket and provided with a locking notch, a yieldable latch plate adapted to engage said notch and cushion the door, and a lever carried by the' bracket 'for lifting the latch rod ont or' engagement with the latch plate.
AL A locking device adapted to be attached to a swinging door and casing and compri'sing a bracket, a latch rod horizontally andvertically pivoted on said bracket and provided vWith a locking notch, a yieldable lartch plate adapted to engage said notch, a pivot pin carried by the bracket, and a lever carried by said pin, one end of the lever being secured to the latch rod and the other end being provided With means for actuating the lever to lift the latch rod out or' engagement with the latch plate.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereuntol set ny hand at Milwaukee, in the county of MilWaukee and VStatev of Wisconsin. i
