" 'CIGARETTE GUTTER.
Apnaaoa ined fune io, i920." smal NoQssaesi.
ToaZZ wh'omzt mayconccmjf Be it known that I, MAX PAUL VERNST HOHN, residing at Dresden-A, Zwickauer- 'strasse' 48,Germany, have invented certain .5 newk and useful Improvements in Cigarette Cutters, of whichthe followingis a 'specification. V
' My 'inventionrelates to improvements 1n cigarette cutters of the vtype referred to herey,10 inbelowand the object of my inventionis toprovidefor an improved construction of the bearings'k and lshafting carrying the cutting'bladeor blades in which afcertain disadvantage connectedwith the `types hereto- 16 fore inuse willbeavoided.
I attain 'my object in view ,by theconf struction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and on thedrawing herewith illustrated in which -Figure v1 is a vertical longitudinal section through a shafting as herein explained, Figure 2 is a transverse vertical section taken through the intermediate portion of the shafting and Figure 3 a horizontal longitudinal section through the same. Figure 4 is a vertical longitudinal section and Figure 5 a vertical transverse section through a shafting showing a specific feature of my improvement as hereinafter more particularly set forth.
In cigarette machines the revolving blade which cuts cigarettes of desired length for use from an integral blank roll, previously formed in and fed from a machine, has to be moved forwardly in the direction of the feed of the roll at a rate which correspondsA to that of the feed of the roll, if a smooth out is desired. For this purpose, a rotary shaft has heretofore been provided on a reciprocating sliding carriage permitting a rocking movement of the shaft to move the blade transversely against the blank roll of cigarettes.
As the carriage of the usual machine must carry a heavy and large mass, and as the speed of the carriage accelerates upon each reciprocation thereof, such mass greatly retards the required acceleration. The speed of the blank roll feed is dependent on the rate at which the carriage travels in the direction of the blank roll feed. While this speed is certainly considerable in the machines heretofore in use, whose production amounts already to a daily output of a hundred thousand or more cigarettes, still, a further increase would be of advantage.
rIlhis increase is, however, dependent on a quicker reciprocating movement of the cutter and this can, in turn, be attained only Vby considerably reducing the bulk of vthe vmass to be moved with the cutter.
ith: a viewof removing the disadvantag referred to I provide a type where the shaft carrying the cutter blade orblades is `permitted to vmove forward and back alone, without requiringtho'se parts which cause the rotation and nodding movements of the Vcutter shaft to join in the saidaxial movements. `This means a considerable reduction of the reciprocating body and permits of a much speedier axial movement of lthe-cutter shaft than could be attainedy heretofore." The result willbe an acceleratedY feed of thestiing and ,avrcorresponding enlargement of .the daily output of cigarettes.
The bearing of the cutter-shaft being an important feature forl the uninterrupted rapid forward and return movements I provide for an additional shaft which is hollow and embraces the said cutter shaft, `transmitting to the same rotatory movement, but remaining stationary with respect to axial movement, the cutter shaft alone being axially movable within the said hollow outer shaft. For the connection of the two shafts I provide in suitable transverse bores in the hollow shaft catches bearing against longitudinal llattenings provided in the inner or cutter shaft, thus securing rotation and at the same time easy axial movements of the said inner shaft.
The drawings show a ,cutter shaft a carrying at one end a seat for the cutter blade or blades b. The said shaft a is inserted in another shaft c which is hollow and has a box d. The' said hollow shaft 0 has further a seat c on which a pulley may be mounted to impart rotation, a key e being provided in the said hollow shaft for the securement of the hub of the said pulley, The parts c2 of the hollow shaft are intended for the 'engagement in suitable bearings not shown on the drawings.
In the inner or cutter shaft a there are provided a pair of longitudinal shallow-fiat recesses or faces f while the outer shaft c hasy two parallel transverse slots in which are inserted the aforementioned catches, Figure 2 showing bars or bolts g bearing against the said flat faces f. Thus the cutter shaft a will be caused by the said catches g to follow up ggneaaose the rotation of the outer shaft c vWhile the said faces f permit of its axial movements to an extent which corresponds to their length.
Various changes in the form and. minor details of'const'ruction may be resorted to Without departing-from the spirit and scope of my invention. Thus the aforesaid catches g are in Figuresfl and 5 substituted by small rollers h rotarily supported .by small axes4 7c, the said rollers being mounted in transverse recesses z' in the outer shaft@ andtolicli` the aforesaid flat? faces f on. which they roll for the axial movement of the shaft a, t i
VI amaware thaty prior to, my (invention 'cigarette cutters. have beenmade in which locking the shafts for rotation and permitting axial movement of the first shaftin the hollow shaft.
2. In apcigarette cutter of the type hereinabove referred to the combination of a rotatable andA axially movable shaft adapted for attachment thereto of a cutting blade or blades and having longitudinal fiat faces, of
.a rotatable hollow outer shaft in which the body of the said first-mentioned shaft is enclosed, and catches in the said ,outer shaft adapted to bear againstand move onl the said flat lfaces of the said inner shaft.
3. In a cigarette. cutter of the type hereinabove referred to., having a rotatable and .Y
axially movable shaft adapted yfor attachment thereto of a cutting blade or blades, and a rotatable Outer shaft which. iSllOllOW, enclosing the body of the said first mentioned shaft-pL which first-,mentioned shaft has longitudinal flat faces, means iu Suitable transverse slots in the said outer'shaftv adapted to bear against and move on the said flat faces. In testimony Whereol aiiX my Signature in presence of two Witnesses.
