PUMP-DRIVE MECHANISM.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SHERWOOD HINDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pump-Drive Mechanisms, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to driving mecha nism for pumps, and the like, and has for one of its objects the provision of a simple and eiiicient dispensing pump mechanism adaptable for being driven either by power or by hand.
A further object is the provision of a simple and efficient hand drive mechanism which can be easily and-quickly attached or detached from a pump mechanism, or the like.
A still further object is the provision of a detachable hand drive mechanism adapted to operate a pump at slower speed on its working stroke than on its return stroke.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
An embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, form ing a part of this specification, and in which- Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section taken through .a pump driving mechanism embodying my invention;

In ordering dispensing pumps for gasoline, lubricating oil, and the like, persons often get such dispensing apparatus with hand power driving mechanism and then after using the same for a while want to apply power to such dispensing apparatus. It is the purpose of this invention to so form the driving shaft of such dispensing apparatus so that it may be provided either with hand driving mechanism or power driving mechanism.
Referring more particularly to the draw ings, I have indicated the fragments of a pump housing 4 with an opening 5 therein, and on the housing 4 is provided a casing 6 having a flange with openings 7 which may be secured to the pump housing 4 in any desired manner. Axially of the casing 6 are bearings 8 and 9, and in the bearings 8 is journaled a shaft 10 having a cupshaped enlargement 11 at one end thereof. At the other end of said shaft 10 is a restricted portion 12 on which is secured a manually operable crank 13.
The operating shaft 14 ofa dispensing pumpis shown extending axially into casing 6. with a restricted portion 15 journaled, in a bore 16 in the center of shaft 10. A. plate 18' has an opening in. which the shaft 14 is disposed and it may also'provide a bearing for said. shaft. On the plate 18 is a casting 19 having studs 20 and 21 thereon. On the stud 20 is a gear. 22 meshing with a gear 23, and the latter is journaled on stud 21. Gear 23 meshes with an internal gear 24 which has one end journaled in bearings 9 and the other end provided with a hub 25 journaled on cup member 11. Gear 22 meshes with teeth 17 out in shaft 14, as clearly indicated in Fig. 5. The members 19 and 18 may be secured to a portion of housing 4 of the pump in any desirable manner, such as by screws 26.
The hub 25 of gear 24 has a cylindrical bore 27 concentric with shaft 14, and in said bore is mounted a friction ring 28. Said ring has a plurality of solid lugs 29 engaging bore 27 and one or more springpressed lugs 30 also engaging said bore. I have indicated two lugs 29 and one lug 30, but the number may be varied as desired. The lug 30 is mounted in a suitable opening in ring 28 and has a spring 31 pressing it outwardly. Ring 28 is held against a shoulder 32 of hub 25 'by a plate 33, and the latter secured to said hub by screws 34, or their equivalent. In the end of cup 11 is formed a diagonal'cut or slot 35 in which is slidably mounted a dog 36. Said dog has an arm 37 disposed in a recess 28 in said ring 28 and a toe portion 38 on said arm engaging a notch 39 in said ring. Notch 39 and recess 28 are sufficiently large to permit easy movement of parts 37 and 38 in allmovements of the dog 36.

The casing 6 is preferably larger than the parts housed therein with a space 44 around said parts for the distribution of oil. A part l5 of this space extends up around shaft 10 in part as so that oil may be carried to all of the movable parts in said cas ing. Anoil filling plug is indicated at the top of casing 6 in Fig. 1, and a drain plug is indicated near the bottom of said figure. The partsbeforementioned are for driving the dispensing pump by hand.
In Fig. 6 l have indicated a power driven apparatus having a casing 6 attached to housingd of the pump casing. The casing 6 is formed so as to fit in housing i the same as casing 6 so that the power apparatus may be used or hand apparatus,
as desired. Axially of casing 6 is indicated'the driving shaft is of the pumping mechanism in substantially the same relation as the shaft occupies in Fig. '1 with respect to casing 6.
The power driving mechanism indicated in Fig. 6 may be any form of power driving mechanism desired, and that indicated is substantially the same as in my co-pending application, Serial No. 381,868, filed May 17, 1920, for fluid pressure motors. Said Fig. 6of the present application is substantially'the same as Fig. 10 in the application above referred to, with the exception of the change in shaft '31 of said application to fit shaft 14- in the present application.

By taking out the'securing means from openings '7 of the flange of casing 6 the hand power device may all he slipped out of opening 5, with the exception of members 18 to 26, inclusive. The power driven apparatus may then beplaced in position and locked therein with the same securing means as used to hold the hand power mechanism in place and be ready for operation at once. I therefore be seen that either of the diving devices may be replaced with the other if a very simple and easy manner.

Pump gearing comprising a driving shaft; a pump shaft extending into the driving shaft; a gear journaled on the driving shaft and connected with the pump shaft; and a clutch dog mounted in the driving shaft and adapted to engage the pump shaft when the driving shaft rotates in one direction and engage the gear when the driving shaft is rotated in the other direction.
7. Pump gearing comprising a casing; a pump shaft extending into said casing; a driving shaft alining with said pump shaft and having a portion telescoping over said pump shaft; a gear journaled on said driving shaft and in said casing; a connection between said gears and said pump shaft; a clutch dog adapted for sliding movement; and a friction member engaging said gear and connected with the dog for automatically shifting the latter.
8. Pump gearing comprising a casing; a pump shaft extending into said casing; a driving shaft extending into said casing; a direct drive connection between said driving shaft and pump shaft; a multiplying connection connecting said driving shaft with said pump shaft; and means for throwing said connections into operation, one at a time.

Pump gearing comprising a pump shaft; a driving shaft substantially alining with said pump shaft; a cup on said driving shaft extending onto said pump shaft; a. gear having a hub journaled on said cup; a connection between said gear and said pump shaft; a dog slidably mounted in said cup; and means for moving said dog into operative engagement with said gear and said pump shaft, one at a time.
10. Pump gearing comprising a driving shaft; a driven shaft substantially alining with said. driving shaft; a cup on the driving shaft extending over and journaled on said driven shaft; a gear hub journaled on said cup; a friction ring extending around said driven shaft and frictionally locked to said huh; a connection between said gear and rid driven shaft; and a dog slidably mounted in said cup and having a portion engaging said friction ring.

Pump gearing comprising a casing having two alining bearings therein; a driving shaft journaled in said bearings and having an opening at its center; a driven shaft having a restricted portion journaled in the opening in said driving shaft; a train of gears connected with the driven shaft; and a clutch member adapted to be alternately moved to connect the driving shaft directly with the driven shaft and also to be moved to connect the driving shaft with said gearing.
13. Pump gearing comprising alining driving and driven shafts; a direct connection between said shafts; a multiplying connection between said shafts comprising a gear surrounding both of said shafts; a. housing extending around said gear and spaced therefrom providing an oil chamber; and means for throwing said connections into operation, one at a time.
14. Pump gearing comprising alining driving and driven shafts, a portion of the driving shaft extending around onto said driven shaft; a gearing connected with said driven shaft and having its hub journaled on said driving shaft, there being a shoulder adjacent the end of said driving shaft; a. friction ring in said hub adjacent said shoulder; and a plate secured to said hub and holding said friction ring against said shoulder.
15. Pump gearing comprising a casing having an opening at one end; a plate closing said opening; a pump shaft extending through said plate into said casing; a driving sh aft in alineinent with the pump shaft; a cup portion on the driving shaft ournaled on said pump shaft; a gear hub journaled on said cup and having one end engaging the casing and its other end engaging said plate; a connection between said gear and said pump shaft; a clutch member; and vieldable means adapted to move the clutch to directly connect said shafts when the driving shaft is turned in one direction and adapted to move the clutch to connect the driving shaft with said gear when the driving shaft is moved in the other direction.

Driving mechanism for a dispensing pump having a casing and a rotary shaft therein comprising a housing; a rotary memher journeied in said housing; a hand crank secured to said rotary member; means for detachably securing said housing to said pump casing with said rotary member in driving relation with said shaft.
